Ridge Racer Type 4. By a mile. That music. Those amazingly cheesy melodramatic storylines. That ingenious reuse of second of course that always twisted things up in interesting ways. That sense that the PS1 was really being pushed to its limits by people who knew the hardware inside out.

I would also accept SNES F-Zero, Waverace 64, or Sega Rally.

F-Zero (SNES)

The first two games really need an arcade cabinet (preferably enclosed, sit-down type) with steering wheel, gear shift, pedals, etc. to get the best experience. I used to play Night Striker in same type of cabinet and that really kicked ass! (but it's shooter, not racing game...) Unfortunately the arcades closed down long ago, and my MAME setup with gamepad just doesn't cut it...

The Amiga game is played with a mouse (strangely that works very well...) and has a sweet intro music / demo.

My man.

Would have never expected to see this show up on here. What a game. Looked lovely for the time and really rewarded patience and practice. Those mouse controls, man. I absolutely loved this back in the arcades. One time I managed to use a combination of winning tracks, extra continues, and mashing Start on the continue screen so others can resume the race, to beat the Cruisn' mode. I don't remember which levels I actually ended up winning other than Australia (one of the hardest levels), and Florida (the last level, won that by a mile, managed to boost myself to 1st place in the first 5 seconds of the race with the boosters, then just smooth cruised the rest of the level).
