Final Fantasy VI vs. Chrono Trigger vs. Secret Of Mana

>> No.1900673

I loved Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, but I'd say FFVI is my favorite of the two.

I've never played Secret of Mana, though I did enjoy Secret of Evermore quite a bit.

Final Fantasy VI was the ultimate refinement of the traditional console RPG of the time. It took the elements of the time and polished them beyond compare, with an outstanding soundtrack and powerful story.

Chrono Trigger was a trailblazing RPG. It improved upon every pre-existing game mechanism it adopted and created entirely new ones. It is basically flawless, the story is not the most deep or meaningful but it's solid and the characters are all excellent. It set the standard for the next generation of console RPGs.

Secret of Mana is a great game, but really the third member of the SNES RPG trilogy is Earthbound. It was an experimental parody of the genre, satirizing elements from the Dragon Quest series, as well as having incredible translation for the modern American setting. The story is oddly paced and more a story of the player's growth through the plot than a direct narrative. It really stands out alongside the previous two to encompass the best of the SNES RPGs.

Honorable mention for Terranigma

Why does everyone hate SoM? Id play it over either of the other two mentioned in the OP.
The best part about SoM is its actuslly fun to play, because you actually play the game instead of selecting shit from a menu
Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger get put on such a pedestal here its ridiculous. They wouldnt even be my picks for best turn based RPG of the 16 bit era

>> No.1901150

>>1901143
I think the hate in this thread is because it's more of an arpg than a traditional rpg. It was also (arguably) surpassed by SD3, which in my opinion is a better game.

Of all the 16-bit rpgs I've played, Chrono Trigger is definitely the most memorable and was the most fun to play through.

SD3 is also a good game that I enjoyed. OP didnt specify traditional or turnbased RPGs, and given the choice anything that doesnt have random battles amd menu based combat will always win. SoM was the best of the three choices given in my opinion, not the best period. I personally couldnt stand the combat is FF6 or CT, which made the games a chore to play. They are both great games, dont get me wrong, but I wouldnt call them best in any way

>because you actually play the game instead of selecting shit from a menu
... Until you learn spells and then halfway through the game everything starts revolving around spell spamming. The only 16-bit action action RPGs I would say deservedly belong up their in execution with the best of the turn-based are some of Falcom's games and maybe Star Ocrean.

The game is very beatable without chaincasting, thats just how many people play the game. Once again, im not saying its the best of the era, merely that I prefer it over the other two choices given by the OP.

I get Chrono Trigger vs. Final Fantasy VI, because they were the two biggest RPGs on the Super NES.

But why include Secret of Mana, and not all the other RPGs like Final Fantasy IV and V, Super Mario RPG, Lufia, Breath of Fire, etc?

Anyways, here are my picks:

1.) Chrono Trigger
2.) Final Fantasy VI
3.) Super Mario RPG
4.) Final Fantasy IV
5.) Secret of Mana

Holy fucking shit

I had no idea there were portable Super Nintendos. And they're under a hundred bucks. I think I'm buying one. How is it? Does it feel like cheap plastic crap or does it feel like an SNES controller?

I don't like it because when scrolling the screen, characters are positioned at 80% of the screen most of the time to get moving. This shit is a huge pet peeve of me during games of this era.

By the way, by "although" i mean solid "while" and not "however". My statement regarding BoF2 as the greatest 16-bit RPG (as it actually is) is absolute than it ever would be with "however" plaguing it with illusion that having one playable character can change things. Which really can; just look at Katt and how better the game is.
