Is there anyone else who cares about the plot differences between the Japanese and English versions of old games. I'm not just referring to obvious regional differences (like cutscenes and such), but subtle changes such as script differences and backstories in the manual.

Konami was pretty guilty of this (pic related), but Capcom and Sega took their fair share of liberties back in the day too.

I assume all do, really. You get some pretty hysterical dialogue when stuff is translated too directly, but I hate it when they just chopped out content that relevant to the story or was considered too mature for games.

South Island is a treasure of jewels and ruins, including the "Chaos Emeralds" that sleep buried somewhere within the island. These stones deal to all life a terrific energy. New techniques basing themselves on nuclear weapons and laser radii are then possible. But, they are not necessary should these stones fall between bad hands that don't understand their power. Also, since South Island is an island with a circular movement, the island started forming a interdimensional torsion in which the Chaos Emeralds wander.

One day, something horrible presented himself on the island. Dr. Robotnik and his army set foot there. "Ha ha!. Even though it is necessary to transport every particle of this island, I will have the Chaos Emeralds!! Then, Dr. Robotnik undertook the development of an enormous fortress in an angle of the island.

"Dr. Robotnik, not again, him?!!! Hearing rumors circulating on South Island, Sonic ran. Dr. Robotnik thinks that Sonic is his deadly enemy, but Sonic does not really account of his adversary. However when Sonic arrived on South Island, a strange spectacle was held before Sonic.

"Look Sonic, this time the situation is totally different! ALL the animals of the island have been transformed into robots!"

"E... everybody!"

"These individuals act henceforth under my unique control. In short, all the island is now your enemy! Bwa ha ha ha ha ha.. This time, the whole world will be mine!"

Difficult! But go for it!

Chalk it up to Sega of America's DUDEBRORADICALEXTREME marketing tainting everything.

I don't give a shit if Sega never got as popular as they did without the help of that awful fucking schtick. Maybe they would have gone third party sooner and Sonic would still have decent games with the "Felix the Cat on acid" aesthetic the original series and initial Japanese artwork had. The intruder of this time is a rookie soldier named Solid Snake who joined FOX HOUND quite recently. His mission is to locate the whereabouts of Grey Fox, find out the identity of Metal Gear and destroy it.

New York City, 1997.
An evil organization began operating in secrecy. This mysterious organization, having seemingly crawled out from the bottom of the Earth, spread their violence everywhere, killing everyone who opposed them and taking survivors as hostages. The sudden massacres seemed endless. Those who escaped could barely reveal their true nature. "A lizard... Ugh..." was all they could say before drawing their last breath.

However, one hero stood up to them. His name is Hayate! A battle to the death is about to begin.

Prologue
Winter 1977. Iga, Japan.
A lone renegade ninja from the Iga clan was being pursued. He was Joe Mushashi, the legendary Shinobi who was said to be a rare ninja master. He became a runaway for the sake of his wife and their son Hayate, whom he wanted to live a happy ordinary life. His pursuers were becoming desperate. Being summoned to a final battle, Musashi placed his son and the child's only companion, Yamato the ninja dog, as passengers in a ship. "I'm doing this just for you two..." This was the last time the young Hayate saw his father.

Spring 1978. New York City, USA.
A certain harbor in Brooklyn was smothered in fog. Richard C. Kato, a Japanese-American who was running a martial arts gym in this city, stumbled into a small Japanese boat during one of his daily jogs. He found a dying woman with a health young child and a dog inside. The woman was holding a star-shaped blade in her little hands.
"Shuriken, Japanese...Ninjas."
Kato decided to raise the child as his own. Hayate was only a year old at the time.

Elsewhere, under the shadows of ordinary everyday life, a mysterious group of assassins have been working secrecy, spreading fear to the people. I managed to avoid making that mistake thanks to a retrospective that EGM had back when MGS1 was coming out that covered the MSX2 and NES games separately. However, he had to sacrifice his own body after the battle. His back was injured during the death duel with Dracula and from that day forward, his body began to slowly decay and now he felt that his time of death was nearby.

One morning, Simon was at the Belmont family's resting ground, a graveyard located before the angel's hill.

Simon was looking back at his own life.

Suddenly, Simon felt something behind his back and when he turn around a young woman was standing within the morning mist. The woman spoke to Simon.

'Your life has been taken over by an evil curse. Right now you're in danger.

15th century Europe. During the Dark Ages, there was a man who was feared by all. A man who has stopped being human. His name was
Count Vlad Tepes, otherwise known as Dracula. His territory was located at the outskirts of Transylvania, at the Wallachia territory, where he used a taboo art to ressurect an evil deity. The deity granted him power and in exchange, he summoned several apparitions from the spirit
world in order to scorch and massacre the entire nation of Wallachia with darkness.

He felt he could extend his presence even further and now he's plotting to take all over Europe. The East Orthodox Church were desperate to solve this situation, that they immediately dispatched a powerful army to Wallachia, but they never came back.

As a last resort, the Pope made a request to a man from the underworld, a man who uses a forbidden art and a pair of Vampire Hunters to end Wallachia's oppresion.

The first one that was entrusted by the Pope was Sypha Belnandez at the East Orthodox Church, an apprentice monk in pursuit of becoming a priest. Sypha's ability is a powerful type of magic that harness it's power from the atmosphere and can manipulate fire, ice and lightning bolts.

Sypha's attacking strenght is great, but he doesn't use weapon and is most vulnerable to any damage received from an enemy's attack. Sypha lost his parents when he was young and was found wandering near the monastery, where he remained at the once-beautiful Wallachia. Sypha knew that the place in his memories was now tainted and he accepted the pope's request to liberate Wallachia.

Around the same time, within Wallachia, a group of rebels were corvertly plotting to overthrow Count Dracula. However their human strength was no help and they were no match for Dracula's dark powers. Some of men were teared to pieces, others were senteced to be skewered and some were transformed into hideous monsters. Grant Dinesti, carefree man from Wallachia was among them.

Those who tainted their hand once don't know when to stop. Count Dracula was not sastified with the power he already had after selling his
soul and body to the devil and he wanted to have more. The contract he made with the devil was also applied to his own son.

The son opposed his father, who still had a human heart even after getting rid of soul, as his own body was no longer human as well and it finally went to the point that he slesyd reminding himself of his hate for his father. However, he cannot challenge his own father, who is an evil spirit himself, all alone as the odds are agaisnt him. Although his relationship to Dracula is a burden for the Cross, nonetheless, Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes opted to fight anyway. He changed his name to Alucard and infiltrate Wallachia underground with the purpose of destroying his father and restoring the beauty of Wallachia, he began searching for a comrade that shared the same ideal.

The Pope was in predicament once again. Sypha, the vampire hunter who was sent out to Wallachia did not returned after the promised period. The Pope assumed that since Sypha didn't return, his mission was already a failure and he was more likely dead by now.

The world was nearing its end. An evil organization created the ultimate weapon, Golden Silver, the God of Ruin, to destroy countless cities on Earth from the moon. The Gunstars (Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow) seeing the Earth turn into a living hell before them and fueled by anger, had a showdown with the powerful Golden Silver. At length, after an arduous battle, they defeated the evil God of Ruin. To make sure he was never resurrected, they sealed his body on the moon and took the 4 gems that powered him, and sealed them away in separate places on Earth. The Gunstars, having been pushed to their limits, prayed for a new civilization to arrive, and they began their long sleep. All that is, except for one...
Time passed, and a new civilization was built on Earth. A legend was spread across the land. "Revive the God that sleeps on the moon, and he will guide the most righteous people to Utopia."
Grey, the commander of the dictatorship calling themselves "Empire", believed in this legend and attempted to carry it out. So he sent people to the moon in a battleship called the "Ark", in order to mine for the 4 gems that would call the God forth. It was then that the leader of the underground mining excursion, Dr Brown, uncovered some capsules, in which the Gunstars were having their long sleep.
Once they awakened, they learned of the Empire's plan to revive Golden Silver. Their companion, Green, whom they had remembered being with them until the very last moment, had lost his previous memories and was assisting the Empire in the revival of the God of Ruin.
"We won't let such a tragedy happen again! We'll get back the gems and put a stop to the revival of Golden Silver!" Once Dr. Brown heard the Gunstars' words, he decided to betray the Empire and promised to help the Gunstars in their battle.

Sometime in the future, somewhere not too far from where you live, an amazing adventure takes place...
The Gunstar family has been the protector of the Gunstar 9 (G-9) for generations. Professor White Gunstar, in his youth, defeated the Robot Golden Silver, a machine that traveled millions of miles to suck G-9 dry of all its resources. Professor White was able to extract the four famous Mystical Gems (The robot's power source), and imprisoned the robot on one of G-9's moons.
But now, years later, a new menace has arisen. Colonel Red, a vicious dictator (and a very bad dresser), found out that the Gunstars knew the location of the Mystical Gems. One day, The Colonel kidnapped the Gunstar twins' older brother Green and used a mind control machine to make Green obey his orders.
With Green's help, Colonel Red has amassed all four Mystical Gems, has turned Gunstar 9's peaceful worker droids into deadly menaces, and is now preparing to leave for Gunstar 9's moon to reactivate Golden Silver. As one of the Gunstar twins, you must fight your way past Colonel Red's Empire Army and retrieve the Mystical gems, or Golden Silver, the Destructor will rise again and destroy your world! Are you heroic enough for the task?

In 1957 a large object from outer space crashed into Earth's Amazon basin, near the ruins of a lost Mayan civilization. Scientists worldwide heralded the incident as a trivial cosmic occurrence, and thus the collision was soon forgotten. Now thirty years later, rumors of an evil force have swept into the Pentagon's front office and tales from frightened villagers of a hideous being with an army of alien henchmen are sending chills down the spines of top military brass. Unwilling to upset current political stability, an all-out assault on the region has been overruled and instead, two of America's most cunning, courageous and ruthless soldiers from the Special Forces elite commando squad have been selected to seek out and destroy these alien intruders.

Congratulations, pal, you're one of the chosen. But before you take pride in being the best, be warned. You’re about to come face to face against Red Falcon, the cruelest life-form in the galaxy. He arrived on Earth thirty years ago (that is six months time in an alien's life) to establish a foothold from which he will attempt to conquer our world and then use it as a stepping stone toward his ultimate fiendish goal: domination of the universe. Needless to say, playing hero won't be easy. But you have no choice - you must be a hero. Because if you fail, life as we know it will cease to exist, and the vile Red Falcon will rule forever. If you succeed, well...it doesn't matter, because I doubt you will...

Yeah, the original concept of Contra was basically "Schwarzenegger and Stallone fight Xenomorphs in the future." It's practically tagline of the arcade version in Japan (pic related). Not sure if it's common knowledge here, but the JPN version of Splatterhouse 2 has a slightly different script. Basically, the US version tried to downplay Jennifer's death in the first game by making it seem as if she was still trapped in the mansion.

The Aliens are back!

December 2634. It seemed as if the Earth has finally escaped from the hand of black magic a year after the battle with the mysterious alien army.

One day, a strange radio message comes in from General Hal of the Federation Troops as he is heading for the base ruins in South America to oversee the GX Army's seventh military exercise.

" Allied GX troops are suddenly attacking us. No, it can't be!! They're not human! They must be..."

The message cuts off there. The top brass of the Federation Troops feel very strange about this message from the General and once again they deploy Bill and Lance, the greatest Contras in history.

A helicopter carrying the two men is sent out on a top secret mission. As it approaches the training site, it lands, drops off the two men, and takes off again immediately. There, they witness the tragic sight of the Federation Troops Facility completely in ruins. Just then, several soldiers came out of hiding to attack.

"Those madness-filled eyes. Their blue discolored skins. They may look human, but their souls are now something else..."

Bill began shooting. Just then, the two men saw the shadow of a vile creature that escaped from the inside of one of their aggressors' body.

"This is..."

The nightmare from last year has returned.

"I thought we wiped out these strange freaks."

The two men glanced at each other and began to run.

The alien creatures that were believed to had been destroyed are alive again. The battle between the Contras and the aliens continues.

Sipping cold lemonade with a couple of native lovelies, Mad Dog and Scorpion (Guerilla Warriors Extrordinare) relax on a Rio beach and boast of how they destroyed the vile alien war monger, Red Falcon. Little do they know that Red Falcon didn't flee with his pointed tail between his legs. Instead, he tactically retreated to round-up ruffians of the universe, friends from all walks of war, to mount a second assault on planet Earth.

One of these new recruits is Jagger Froid, a demented alien from the Black Hole Galaxy, who dishes out punishment with a laser sharp tongue. Red Falcon has also shuttled in The Babalu Bestructoid Mechanism, a giant alien attack tank, which was the primary weapon used to disintegrate the innocent solar system of Tralala.

But the genius behind the Red Falcon's Earth conquering concept is his plan to have thousands of intergalactic warriors seep into the the brains of the U.S. Army. It's a mind contamination trick which has already taken command of U.S. Forces at Fort Fire Storm.

How do we know that all out soldiers have been brain trashed? You can see it in their eyes.

Now, if Mad Dod and Scorpion fail to recuperate from their months on the beach in time to destroy Red Falcon's G.I. fortified Hate Nest, his sinister scheme will permeate the world's mightiest power (nuclear missile silos included).

And if that happens, we'll all be pushing up daisies.

The Red Falcon Organization's plot to invade the Earth has been thwarted twice thanks to the efforts of the Contras, experts in guerrilla and anti-alien warfare. However, another moment of crisis was yet to come...

A certain superpower with the ambition to dominate the world has observed the great battle between the Contras and the aliens, and now their dreadful plot to research the aliens in order to bring into fruition military weapons of mass destruction for use in the near future has progressed in secrecy. The aliens are being cloned in an isolated South Pacific island and it's only a matter of time before they resurrect completely.

When the governing body of the Federation Army learned of this dreadful plan, they gave secret orders to Private First Class Bill, a veteran hero from the Contra unit, to thwart this plot. A grand battle begins once again as Bill is sent to the secret military base by himself. The ambitions of the superpower must be shattered and the revival of the aliens must be stopped!

Pfc. Bill is a war hero with a long military career who is a member of "Contra". A professional in anti-alien warfare, Bill has fought in two alien invasions in the past.

Bill "Mad Dog" Ko have twice defeated Red Falcon, the most despicable villain to overtake a planet... or at least try. But the danger is not over yet.

The vile Black Viper has come from deep space to finish what Red Falcon started. And he did not come alone. Black Viper has transported a battalion of battletron tanks, stealth subs, laser cannons and annihilating androids. Now, from a secret naval base on a desolate ocean island, he is planning to unleash his hideous secret weapon: a new mutant breed of killer aliens.

Armed with an array of devastating weapons, Scorpion's new mission is to infiltrate the five freak-laden levels of the enemy base and put an end to the madness-and Black Viper-once and for all. As he prepares to enter the secret army base alone, he knows it will take more than sheer firepower to wipe out Black Viper's horrific horde of mega-mutants. Scorpion will have to keep his eyes peeled sharp for unceasing assault by artillery snipers and keep his wits about him as he leaps into battle against grotesque genetic mishaps. The revival of the aliens must be stopped and the ambitions of the evil Viper vanquished forever!

You're Jimbo and Sully, special forces comrades just like your fearsome forefathers were. Nowadays, your weapons are far more advanced than they were when your ancestors saved the world from being skewered on Red Falcon's fangs.

That brutal beast is still in his prime and has had plenty of time to plot his revenge. He had swamped Neo City with six stages of the most cruel and unusual punishments ever. So run, climb, ride, soar and start blasting your way to the alien main base. Before your family name and your planet are just dirt under Red Falcon's claws.

In the year 200X, industrial use humanoid robots have been created thanks to the steady progress of science. Then one day, some shocking news reached the world’s foremost designer of industrial robots, Dr. Right.
“Doctor, the robots you developed have begun going out of control one after another! At this rate, mankind will be ruled by robots!!”
Humanity will be dominated by the robots!? Surely, this could only be the work of that evil genius, Wily. He must have modified the robots designed by Dr. Right to hijack their powers in a mad scheme for world domination…
“Rock” was a household robot whom Dr. Right had always regarded as his own son. Now, in order to stop the 6 robots he had built with his very own hands and to recover each of their central cores, the Doctor has transformed Rock into the fighting robot “Rockman”.
Go! Go! Rockman!! Only you can safely retrieve the 6 robots, then destroy Dr. Wily’s robot factory to restore peace!!

It's MEGA MAN versus the powerful leaders and fighting forces of Monsteropolis -- that strange multi-faceted land of robot-like Humanoids. Brilliant scientist Dr. Wright conceived the construction of fully-operational human-like experimental robots to perform specific everyday duties. Dr. Wright, and his assistant Dr. Wily, encouraged with their very first near human robot -- MEGA MAN -- proceeded to develop
six additional Humanoids, all programmed to perform prescribed rituals:

Cutman: Designed to function as a lumberjack. Powerful saw-toothed Scissorlike instrument protrudes from head, capable of gnawing through giant forest timbers

Iceman: Impervious to chilling sub-zero temperatures, capable of human like performances under extreme climatic conditlons

Gutsman: A bulldozing character capable of lifting and transporting huge boulders

Bombman: A real "blaster" as a heavy duty laborer who uses intensely powerful explosives to clear lands for Dr. Wright's construction projects

Fireman: Melts and molds metals with flamethrowing torch flaring from atop his head.

Elecman: Dr. Wright's electrifying creation planned for conducting electrical operations even supervising nuclear power plants.

But, with the exception of MEGA MAN, all of Dr. Wright's near-human robot experimentation went awry. Assistant Dr. Wily turned disloyal, re-programming Dr. Wright's Humanoids, now bent on destroying opposition so Dr. Wily could control the world and its resources.

Resisting re-programming, MEGA MAN is chosen the defender of the universe and its inhabitants. MEGA MAN dares to single-handedly penetrate seven separate empires of Monsteropolis, eliminating the leaders
and followers of these sovereignties. Get ready for some very exciting challenges!
