I recently bought a PSP1000 to use mainly for emulation, but I hate the dpad. It is too sunk into the system and it takes too much pressure to hit diagonally. Has anyone successfully modded their dpad to make it more responsive?

I was hoping I could find a replacement dpad that was just taller and stuck out of the system more. I believe that would solve my problem. Any thoughts?

If you can model it yourself you might want to try a 3d printing service.

best solution is to buy a psp slim. if your pleb level makes this impossible then just get the next best thing for fixing the psp 1000's horrid dpad.

This is like saying the best way to repair your car is to buy a new, different car.

That's not "modding the dpad".

I've been trying to find a decent d-pad for PC emulation for ever. It seems impossible, anything by microsoft or sony is awful for example.

I've decided that nintendo must have a patent on usuable d-pads, so my next plan is to get some wii classic controllers.

The whole industry is fucked. I wish patents were abolished so that a company out there could produce some good controllers.

>> No.1885043

Keyboard is great for Final Fantasy and Harvest Moon, but platformers and beat-em-ups need a controller.

Plus I'm planning to connect a PC to a CRT in front of a couch, so a controller makes for a more authentic experience.

>platformers and beat-em-ups need a controller

I can play them just fine on a keyboard. Pads are definitely better if you're sitting on the couch, I agree.

Nintendo had a patent on cross-shaped d-pads until 2005, but that doesn't mean there weren't other good d-pads until then. For 2D games, I recommend getting a Saturn controller, they have one of the best d-pads in existance.

By the way, the Dreamcast had a cross-shaped d-pad but circumvented the patent by changing the disc below it.

Personally I have no problem emulating games that only use face buttons using just a keyboard, but I hate playing games that make extensive use of L/R buttons with one, such as super metroid or the GBA metroids. It just feels so akward to me that way.

>> No.1885486

Sega made god-tier D-pads. Although a genesis controller would be bad for all-in-one emulation on your PC, since it wouldn't be able to do any consoles from the SNES onward due to lack of buttons.

See if its possible to hook a saturn controller to pc via adapter. That thing is great.

That's part of what I mean. You can't exactly emulate games that use combinations of multiple face buttons and L/R. And even if you ignore that, you still have 1 fewer button than SNES

I can understand the desire to keep this board sticking to the rules but you "BLOOHOOHOO NOT RETRO" white knights are the biggest shitposters on this entire board. You add NOTHING to the discussions and complain whenever something is outside your delicate sensibilities. Guess we better not talk about Logitech F310s or 360 pads or PCs or any emulator that isn't fucking ancient or upscalers or gaming on LCD TVs or using modern keyboards to play games or using flashcarts, cause that shit ain't retro, right?

Here are a bunch of active threads that under your fucked up INTERPRETATION of the rules shouldn't be retro either, ostensibly. Anything tangentially related seems to fly with the vast majority of the board, but you seem to feel the need to special snowflake about it. If it offends you so much hide and move on, don't shit it up for people actually enjoying threads.

>This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.

Nowhere does it say discussion of current systems used for emulation is forbidden. Half the shit we talk about on here is something that was produced or invented after 1999 and is applied for retro gaming.

Put some of those rubber dots you put on the bottom of things to keep something from sliding around onto the four directions. They're just the right height if you get the small round ones.

You can make a spacer to rest between the dpad molding and the contact pad, I did that to one of my psps and it made a huge difference. You can also get one of those "dpad coins" off ebay, they only cost a couple dollars and you don't have to take apart your psp. And the performance is the same as it would be if you made a spacer.

Or you could go all out and swap it for a SNES dpad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLxfY2Cpzos

Generic "dpad coin". Fun fact: the dpad coin was designed by Capcom to make 2d fighters actually PLAYABLE on psp. Never seen the real "dpad coin", but the chinese one found in these button kits works just fine.

This is completely relevant. I use my PSP mostly for retro emulation, a lot of people probably do too. And the fucking 4-separate-buttons-for-a-dpad is horrendous. Nobody wants to apply 500 pounds of pressure per square inch just to get diagonals to register.

So you fuck off. I actually learned that it's possible to purchase button mods for your PSP from this thread. Which is more than I've learned from a lot of threads on here.
