Does anyone have this? Is it any good?
Are Watermelon's claims true that it is too hardware-optimized to emulate?

Have they fulfilled any cartridge preorders in the last three years?

>> No.1877737

There's a MESS version that emulates it. I don't remember which one exactly, but a simple google search can handle it. The game is okay. It's not technically brilliant (only played the Genesis version, haven't listened to CD ost; also, it has some mode 7 effects), but it's a solid game.

I think Mode 7 is a decent shorthand for parallax scaling. We know the Genesis didn't do that in hardware, but there's no reason a game couldn't do it manually if not a lot of action was going on.

Since Pier Solar was originally going to be a Sega CD game, and that does do hardware scaling, it's plausible that the game still has that where it can manage.

I am fully aware that the Genesis was capable of these kinds of transformations and scaling, but Mode 7 was specifically a graphics mode of the SNES hardware.

might just wait for the 'hd' version and play in 16bit mode. the 'hd' graphics look shit.

Seems to work. Mind you I didn't get very far to test it. So there might be more issues later on or something.

Oh quit being anal, as >>1877772 said "Mode 7" is good shorthand for those kinds of semi-3D graphics. We all know the Genesis didn't technically have Mode 7, but many games utilized a near carbon copy of it.

I've been meaning to pre-order a copy of the newest reprint of this...They say it'll be out by September but it seems to keep getting delayed...Should I do it? 60 bucks seems like a pretty fair price.

What do you suppose is a reasonable price for a cartridge-based game that uses (if I'm not mistaken) a non-mass-produced form of memory?

RPGs cost a ton when they were new. In Squaresoft's catalog that came with US copies of Secret of Evermore, they were asking for $79 (close to 125 in today's dollars) for FFIII and Chrono Trigger, and those prices are comparable to what you saw in stores at the time. On the Genesis, Phantasy Star IV was super spendy, in the neighborhood of $100 when it was new.

Watermelon and similar companies don't pay licensing fees, but neither do they save money by printing tens of thousands of copies at a time, using existing infrastructure, etc. They want $60 for Genesis copies, and my guess is they make about the same on them as they will on downloads.

Haven't played Pier Solar and don't intend to, but I'm interested in their SNES project.

Right, and it's half-price compared to the mentioned Squaresoft titles.

While trying to work out the cost of manufacturing cartridge games after my last post (>>1878451), I stumbled on a forum post written by someone involved with this game:

>For Pier Solar, e made a huge first print run of several 1000 copies because we were sure there are many Genesis- fans around. We were right, and with making no profit at all we managed to sell the game at 35$ shipped worldwide. Cartridge, cardboard box, full color manual, poster, stickers, and a CD. The later, smaller (which would have been more expensive anyway due to smaller numbers) runs became more expensive, also because we finally wanted to get some financial backing for new projects. And because what we saw with our 35$ game was that many people bought it, only to sell it on eBay for huge prices once it was sold out. The extra low price tag we chose did not benefit gamers, it benefit resellers. So we no longer sell games for no profit, but a small one.

>> No.1878921

>>1878848
i indeed paid $35 for my classic edition, less than 30 euros at that time, which was a bargain considering the quality of the release, the whole packaging, etc

i was pretty sure they losed money on the first print

In the No-Intro set. Doesn't run on an Everdrive, alas.

>> No.1879004

>>1878921
Honestly I would rather they make some profit off of it if it meant they could do larger and more frequent production runs.
As it is, this game sells for like $200 on eBay, which I believe makes it the most expensive game on the Genesis.

>> No.1879062

Programming quirks aside, it's a pretty darn good Lunar clone. Picked up a couple copies a few years ago, and it and the OST are well worth buying from WM, if you get a chance.

It just needs a high accuracy emulator to run it.

GenPlus GX can run it. It's for Wii and part of RetroArch for PC.

MESS can apparently run it too. Most of the roms I've found online were bundled with MESS.
