1875041 No.1875041 [Reply] [Original]

Goodwill is testing a new chain of charity stores called The Grid.

It's all gaming stuff, apparently including a ton of /vr/. I guess the reason there's never any good stuff at Goodwills is that they've been pooling it all to stock this beast.

Yep this sure is run by Goodwill. So it's just the one test location in North Carolina, right? That explains why their selection is actually decent. They'd have to sift through donations from all 50 states to come up with a handful of appealing games. Watch them open another location and it becomes The Madden Store For PS2.

Originally the store was located on the westside (hood) of town. All the games were sorted in a flat bin, the prices were better, and they huge bins of miscellaneous cables and accessories.

Hey OP, I've been there a few times myself. Live right around the corner from it. It's awesome but I miss the goodwill computer works on the other side of town that came before it.

The selection is alright, but most of the prices are laughably overpriced. EXTREMELY overpriced in some cases. At least they'll give Save Point and Video Game World more competition. Also the cashiers are kinda derp. On opening day I picked up a few cheap sega games and the cashier asked me "How do you think our prices compare to Gamestop?" Well considering GS doesn't sell retro...

Also fuck, I just realized that all of a sudden Charlotte has like 3 clustered game stores.

Edit, some games are good prices like commons. But anything beyond that starts getting absurd. Also goodwill gets all this product for free too, so they could still stand to make decent profits while selling below the market value. That could even drive sales up for them.

This is a bad thing. For one, it centralizes all the vidya, which means you'll NEVER get a good deal because all the reseller scum will have long since picked the bones dry before you get a chance. Secondly, the store being specifically for vidya means that they're not going to be completely ignorant of what they got. So no more finding expensive games for dirt cheap because goodwill doesn't know any better.

but it doesn't really matter, since we lose either way. There's never been any decent video game stuff at my local goodwill - probably because they ship anything semi-decent off to some shitty shopgoodwill.com storage facility instead.

The thing about retro stores is that they don't understand that I could just order stuff off of E-bay or Amazon for the same price or lower than what they charge. The only legit good deals I ever got in a store was at this privately owned second hand store that this chain smoking Japanese lady owned. A flat rate of 2.50 per cart and 30 bucks per console. The console prices are a bit inflated but the cheap games made up for it at least.

Sadly these sorts of things are drying up. Old games used to be dirt cheap and you could get them for pennies anywhere. Then the prices ballooned, but at least most people still didn't know about the increased value, and you could still get stuff cheap out of the seller's ignorance.

But it won't be long now before that's gone. There are only so many people who give away old games at garage sales and such, and eventually we'll close in a theoretical point where all the stock has been absorbed by resellers, and then it'll be nothing but resellers selling to resellers.

My town actually has one of these, except its not called "The Grid". The premise is pretty similar, though. They sell game consoles and games in pretty good condition. However, most of them are "NFL 2004" "MBA 1994" etc etc. They fix up old computers and put parts in boxes so you can find the part you are looking for easily. They also seem pretty knowledgeable. The only problem is, its way overpriced.

Happily these sorts of things are raining down on us. Every day every console takes another step in it's life cycle of starting off expensive, slowly dropping in price, becoming nearly worthless and then rising in value as a collectors item. Towards the end of this process everyone has the opportunity to pick up games and consoles for next to nothing that will one day be more rare and valuable. If people chose not to take advantage of this because it doesn't offer the instant hipster cred they're jonesing for that's their loss.

I think there is a potential problem in that logic: games have been revealed to be collector items. Dirt cheap Wii games will be hoarded, cared for, and stockpiled as investments. Once 15 years have passed since its fall into WalMart bargain bins, everyone who wants them or was interested in hoarding them will still have them. It isn't a guarantee that they won't be worth much, I just think that with increased reseller attention from day 1 (just look at dumb shit like VGA graded Wii and PS3 games) as well as people predicting future value fo mass-produced common games, there won't be as much earning potential outside of reselling games that are truly rare from the get-go (limited editions, recalls, low print runs, exclusives, etc).

>> No.1879496

>>1879442
It doesn't quite work like that, simply because video games are so much more mainstream now.

The same thing happened with comics. People saw that the old comics were becoming rare collectibles, so they figured "I'll buy up all these modern comics and they'll be collectors items in the future!" But that didn't work because comics became so mass produced that there was no longer any sense of rarity at all.

Well unless they'd have deals with other districts to exchange merchandise, they'd have to buy it from the other districts.

But I'd say they were just pulling donations from that one district for a while before they opened. A specialty store like that isn't aiming for a quick turnaround on large amounts of product at a "small" price. They'd survive on just pulling stock from one district (which could easily be over 20 stores). Though they may nevernever sustain being as fully stocked as thouse pictures show.

Never found much outside of some old PC games I wanted at goodwill stores. I have found some great deals at consignment shops, pawn shops and those places that sell stuff auctioned off from private storage areas though (storage outlets). Even found some good deals at antique shops (usually hiding on a shelf somewhere). Also, if you have an old DVD rental place going out of business, they might have some old games if you ask. I was looking around at a mom and pop rental place last year that was closing its doors when I noticed a really rare NES game in a case near the front of the store. I bought it and asked if they had more. The owner went up into his 'attic' storage area and brought down three boxes full of old NES games he used to rent in the early 90s still in the boxes and offered them to me for $100.00. I feel ya, it's really frustrating trying to find deals.

The only place I've been able to find things at reasonable prices are the Trade-It stores in eastern NC. Some stuff is priced accordingly but usually below ebay and sometimes randomly priced. The one in Raleigh sucks though and has much less of a selection because I think Edward McKay's actually buys all their good stuff and sells it for double the price. At least it seems that way.

The Raleigh flea market does suck, but there's another one called the Raleigh Flea Market Mall. Going out of the city it's before Edward McKay's on 401. There's a couple of resellers in there but their prices are way better than the ones at the fairgrounds. I haven't been there in the morning to see if anyone was selling stuff outside but it's very possible.
