Can we talk about true underrated games, not games that because of the internet have developed a following like Mother 3 or Mischief Makers but games that are often hated or considered mediocre but you think they deserve way more attention.

Pic related its High Seas Havoc do yourself a favor and play it!

Dynamite Heady is a game I love and is pretty underrated but its appeared on a lot of Genesis compilations in recent years so its sort of gotten the attention it deserves.

A lot of genesis games. Pretty much everything for SNES was already part of or spawned its own franchise that continues to this day, whereas many great genesis games either didn't get sequels at all or just stayed within the 16-bit era.

seriously though you're right but most N64 games are pretty unknown due to there only being like 4 that people actually played.

This game made some big part of my childhood.

It was freaking difficult but I had fun with it. Also the soundtrack was just beautiful:

Tons of arcade games by Sega, Capcom, Namco, etc. are underrated. A couple of them were ported to the Genesis like Forgotten Worlds, Marvel Land and Bonanza Bros etc. but they are still underrated.

Bucky O'hare (NES) I'd say was an underrated game a few years back, but it's held in pretty high regard now.

Cobra Triangle on the other hand, hardly mentioned anywhere and a really solid boat racing game with tons of different kinds of levels. Maybe it's the "unfair" difficulty (the Reach The Finish stages can do some really punishing stunlocks on you, and the waterfall stages can easily eat up an entire continue in a few seconds if you get a bad flow going), but practice really does make perfect in it. Also the score meter loops at 999,999 so you'll have to plan ahead to max out the score without finishing with 000,010 points after beating the final boss and missing the top10.

TWINE on the N64 doesn't get talked about very much, mostly because Rare's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark overshadow it. It's honestly a really good followup to Goldeneye. Good first player campaign, good multiplayer levels and gameplay, better controls, better graphics, voice acting from the film.

The game's also on the PSX, but I've never played that version and I've heard it's inferior to the N64 version.

I'm going to definitely agree with you there.

I feel like this game gets overlooked a lot. It had pretty big areas to explore and some minor puzzles to solve in addition to combat.

It always felt a lot more pixellated to me, whereas Goldeneye might have been blockier it didn't have the "pixel staircase slopes" on everything that wasn't a straight 90 degree angle. Was a while since I played it, so might remember this part wrong.

It did have really nice multiplayer modes though, and had it been a mod for Half-Life I think it could have made a good replacement for CS.

Snake's Revenge doesn't deserve the bad reputation it has gotten. In a just world, it would've be considered legit spinoff to the series, instead of being dismissed by ignorant fanboys who never played beyond the starting jungle.

My fucking nigga, I came here to post that.
People often say it's a sonic clone but I think it's a pretty good Sonic clone in any case, and people love the old 2D Sonic games, so I don't know why Socket is always shitted on.
Loved it when I was a kid.

All Konami-developed warner bros-licensed games are pretty awesome.
I loved Animaniacs too.

>>1876315
I thought the one with bad reputation nowdays is the port of Metal Gear 1 (which by the way was made with a time limit schedule of 3 months).
Snake's Revenge was never considered bad, and even Hideo Kojima liked it. What's more, Snake's Revenge is the reason why kojima decided to continue MG1 and made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the MSX, so maybe without Snake's Revenge, we wouldn't have had any other Metal Gear game.
Also it was made by the Castlevania III team.

>> No.1877617

>>1876315

I like it. In a lot of ways it's better than Metal Gear on the MSX. I also like Ghost Babel a lot. I just think of them both as non-canon spin offs. The best of the 2D MG games is MG2 though imo. None of them come close except for maybe GB.

there's a game called gladiator for dos/pc

it is an eagle's eye perspective gauntlet squad-based (though the squad part isn't necessary--it's perfectly playable with just one character) rpg. it comes with a pretty substantial campaign that doesn't really make a lot of sense but it's... pleasing, in that retro-ey kind of way. basically the way it works is that you progress through levels earning various amount of gold from either killing dudes, picking up gold, or just from finishing the map in a reasonable amount of time. you then use that gold to either improve your character(s) (using standard RPG attributes) or hire more characters and/or improve them.

multiplayer is fun but it's one of those awkward share-a-keyboard kind of affairs.

a couple of dudes got one of the devs to donate the source and they made an SDL port, which runs fine: http://snowstorm.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/site.cgi?page=openglad

it's very fun. dunno how people felt about it at the time but it definitely deserves more attention

skip to 7:30 for gameplay

this guy has gone through the trouble of creating an entire squad, which can be fun (i always liked to make one character and blow all my cash on his stats). part of the deal is that the game has kinda wonky AI because it is shareware from the early 90s, so if you make a team everybody who isn't controlled by you will be controlled by AI, which can be a good thing or a bad thing. you can switch between characters by pressing a key, but at any given point you can only control one.
