This guy pictured here probably has the biggest private video game collection in the state I live in.

His name is Jeff Cooper of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has been actively collecting video games since the early 1980's.

He works as an American History Professor at Oklahoma State University.

I had a sit-down with Jeff Cooper a little over a week ago, and had a long conversation with him about video game and collecting.

Here are some photographs of his collection.

To be honest with you, he comes off as kind of a prick, at least from a buyer's perspective.

He shows up to local conventions and get-togethers and brings games from his collection to sell. Duplicates, extras, basically his cannon fodder.

He had a CIB Zelda II, which had a little sticker on the front that said "For the Serious Collector: $100."

I happened to get a copy in comparable condition for $70.

He doesn't like people gawking at what he has for sale unless they're buying.

From his profile on the exhibitor's section of the OVGE website (the convention I met him at): "Jeff always brings a wonderful selection of Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, NES..etc.. stuff for sale so do stop by, shake his hand, and learn something. But most importantly… Buy Something!"

Despite the fact the fact that his prices aren't very good, and that he also might be a liar (see next post), he's still a rather fascinating guy, since he has to be the oldest video game collector I know, and he was going around garage sales, warehouses, toy stores, and collecting all sorts of stuff before even I was born, much less before the internet. Back then, there really wasn't much of a video game culture to speak about.

I asked him several questions about his opinions and thoughts about video gaming and such.

One question was about his thoughts on today's trend of video game hardware going for a more all-in-one entertainment model.

He said that, obviously, his biggest fear was that there would eventually be no more physical mediums which to collect with the going trend right now.

I doubt it will ever get there. And I find it to be a double edged sword. Digital copies may not be physical copies, but as someone who plays more obscure titles, it's a Godsend.

Anyway, this is kinda off topic, but I just wanted to interject. Please continue, OP. This is a good thread.

The next question I asked was what was his thoughts about some of the more questionable aspects of about the reseller's market, specifically the whole issue with EarthBound and how some would consider that the resell price has been artificially raised by resellers hoarding and selling cartridges, manuals, and boxes at ridiculous prices, despite the fact that EarthBound may not be all that rare of a game by some standards.

Unsurprisingly, his answer was a basic ho-hum "supply and demand" response.

The last question I asked was about his most valuable piece.

He claims that it's his Color TV Game 15. His story was that he managed to have a wealthy friend buy this "super rare" unit from Japan, and gave this story about how Nintendo released both the Color TV Game 15 alongside the Color TV Game 6 with the intention of using the Color TV Game 15's high price tag to influence buyers to buy the cheaper version.

According to him, it's worth roughly $7,000.

Here are the facts:

The Color TV Game 15 was not released alongside the Color TV Game 6. It was released about a year later.

There is nothing documented that even remotely corroborates with his side of the story.

You can own your very own "Super-Rare $7,000" Color TV Game 15 right now for about $140.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PONG-Nintendo-COLOR-TV-GAME15-CTG-15S-Japan-Import-1977-Working-Complete-RARE-/321477755898?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ad99143fa

His Stack-Up, he claimed, only cost him $5 from 20 years ago.

This is pretty interesting, thanks for posting OP. I'll have to remember OVGE for next year.

They used to have some pretty good game stores in Tulsa (and chains like Vintage Stock tended to have better stuff). There isn't shit here in Dallas, and it was always nice going up there on business and being able to get some good finds, although it's been bare the last couple of times I've been up there. There was one on the north side of Tulsa whose name escapes me at the moment, but it was closed as of about a year ago.

I agree that we will still have physical media for a long time to come. Mainly because of internet speeds and how large new games are becoming.

Some modern games uncompressed are 50 gB+. To download and install something that large would be quite an undertaking unless you have cutting edge internet speeds.

Physical media is just a very convenient way to deliver large amounts of data still.

I don't know where you are but that doesn't sound like such a huge feat to me. Worst case scenario, you just leave the system on overnight and it's done in the morning. The only way I can really see it being a problem is if you have a bandwidth cap.

>> No.1872887

On my connection, assuming the server maxes out my download speed, a 50GB game would take at least 23 hours to complete.
And it would also consume a quarter of my monthly bandwidth cap. As well as inconveniencing all my housemates by making online games unplayable and interfering with even basic web browsing.

Not everyone lives in the USA or affluent regions of Europe.

You don't need cutting edge speed, just not shitty speed.
Also, almost no games uncompress to 50GB. Unless you're converting the datafiles themselves for no good reason. Rage was one of the largest games at 20GB. If you had raw textures, which are unreleased it'd be like 1TB of data. But if you consider the playable format uncompressed, it's still only 20GB.

I have decent speed, nowhere near cutting edge, it would still only take a bit over an hour to download 50GB.

>> No.1873054

So if we uncompress all the data in a game and move to a small town in Africa modern games will take a long time to download.

If it takes you about an hour to download 50 gigs of data you have a 111mb/s connection. That is the god damn definition of cutting edge speeds. That is 10 times higher than the national average.

But i believe this is all a moot point. I believe this is the last generation of consoles. It will all go to "media centers". Just look a the Xbone launch. It was all

>SPORTSTVSPORTSTVSPORTSTVSPORTSTV

The overwhelming majority of "gamers" now only play on their phones. That is where the money is and the market follows the money. You'll hook your phone up to your TV with an HDMI cable and a blue tooth controller. Your phone will be your new "console". Then all games will basically be computer games with minimum required specs that will be for your phone.

That collector has a very valid fear. Also i just don't see modern console games as being collectable really. They are so abundant its ridiculous. Its not like a NES cartridge that only 40K were ever made.

DOS/Windows tended towards complex strategy games, role-playing games and simulators, and adventure games, none of which are popular today. The different hardware and software configurations are a pain in the ass even if you know what you're doing, and you will need more than one computer if you want to play all the games. Floppy disks aren't very durable and don't lend themselves well to being sold without the box. There's a greater need for a manual than with console games, and many games have off-disk copy protection.

Amigas are much more straightforward and simple with more attractive games, but they're not well known outside of people who grew up with them.

The C64 is the best-selling computer model of all time, yet the NES sold about four or five times as much. So consoles have also been much more widespread than computers.

There was a pretty huge backlash to that though. The PS4 sold ten million units when their entire marketing campaign was essentially just "we're not Xbox". This is Jeff Cooper writing. Thanks to those of you who got some enjoyment from the pics of my collection and for the interesting comments from the vast majority of you.
My son warned me that there would be a tiny minority of loser-trolls; most of those comments were funny. But I'm disappointed that the reporter from the Tulsa World is not only one of these trolls, but is a poor reporter as well. I'd like to clear up the misconceptions about the TV-15. I received it from a Japanese friend. He said his father bought a TV-6 and a TV-15 on release day. TV-15 was quickly discontinued and then re-released. This would explain why there are different model numbers and different box designs for TV-15. As for documentation, my friend took me to wiki-Japan. He too is a history professor, and I doubt he was making things up as he translated. I never said the item was worth $7,000. I never mentioned any figure whatsoever. Finally, the ebay link the reporter offerd brings us to a TV-15 in a different unit in a different box than mine. One might just as well link to a PAL Stadium Events and claim that it reflects on the value of an NTSC one. Finally, she seems to believe I am a possible "liar" because I said I bought my sealed Stack Up for $5. I never said this. I bought in in 1993 for $4.

What arcade machine would you want that you don't have?

What about collecting pinball machines?

Lastly are you going to pass your collection down to anyone or are you going to burn it/let it rot in a storage unit to up the collection value for other people?

We have seen pictures of you playing a Burger Time machine. I am saddened to admit that I don't play half of my games half as much as I should, but I DO play them. What is your opinion on collectors who do NOT play their games, and on those who are adamant on not opening sealed retro games?

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since I can only read what some other Anon had to say about him since I haven't seen any video of him speaking directly or really cared enough to research it but if that was actually him posting that one post in the thread, and broadly dismissing his detractors as "trolls" rings some Chris-Chan bells. Yeah.

I got Super Metroid in 2003 for under $20 on ebay, CIB. F-Zero in 2011 for around the same price, also CIB. They aren't rare games by any means but the collector's boom has gotten ridiculous these days.

I'm almost "done" with my collection and will only focus on Gamecube up after I bag about 10 more games. But I've been on this quest for a long time.

I am super jealous of this guy having the space for all these arcade decks. My apartment is almost full.
