These pictures are from a video game convention that happened a little more than a week ago.

The venue was pretty shitty and the temperatures that day were well over 100F. Add in the factor of a rain storm that occurred in the middle of the day, and you have yourself a hot and muggy enclosed prison full of sweaty, overweight people and blown-up prices.

Also on hand were Etsy dealers offering their own custom-made plushies based on your favorite obscure video game characters.

This location is also a retro-arcade, filled with games that range from video game staples, to "who gives a fuck?"

They had an Atari Star Wars cabinet for sale for over $6,000, because they apparently overhauled the fuck out of all the components.

I still thought that was outrageous.

Now comes the part where I do my personal little photo project where I take these things and make them pose for pictures in interesting places.

Seems so familiar.

I went to the Screwattack Gaming Convention in Dallas in July.

It wasn't specifically retro gaming, but majority of the dealer room sold old cartridge games. The console gaming include about 3 rows of TVs with all sorts of retro consoles hooked up. Last year they had a Jaguar you could play.

I've been to MAGFest a few times. Not 100% retro but they have a shit ton of retro games set up, and plenty of retro game vendors.

I was at SGC this year too.

They had a better game room/arcade setup this year than last year.

I had a shit ton of fun playing NBA Jam with my friends. That game never fails to make everyone playing jump and yell. One of our friends was fucking undefeated the entire weekend until just before we were going to leave, and my brother managed to beat him by 1 point finally.

It was good he did, too, otherwise we'd never hear the end of it.

In what ways are these guys douches? I've been to stores where the employees literally had the 'tisim and gave piss poor service, but that's about it.

Here are other photographs taken by somebody else of the same convention that hopefully gives you an idea of what sort of people go to these sort of things.

Over there was one of those PVM monitors some people talk about.

The guy there was selling the one on top for $20.

I was thinking about getting it, but then he said it only had mono output, so I passed it up.

Real nice of this guy to let people play with his originally-owned electronic games.

I figure some people would be very anal about people touching their exhibitions.

He was also smitten by the ROB and FCR I brought, and had to take photos of them as well.

Never expect really cheap prices at gaming events, most have to price up or the competition buys there stock and sells for much more

I visited California Extreme last year in Santa Clara, CA. It's not 100% retro stuff, as they do have some more recent arcade games, but a good chunk of it is old school, and they do have a pretty large selection of pinball games to play too. I played a vector-display game with my friend about tanks shooting down helicopters, it was fun.

Last time I had a stall at a gaming event I had a few £1 boxes filled with games and things of little worth (sports titles and the likes).
Made a lot of cash from it.
This was about 5 years ago, probably not viable now

Would anybody in the NE Florida vicinity be interested in getting something like this set up? How does one go about getting guests or exhibitors interested? I've always wondered at cons if they pay guests to show up or they do so of their own volition.

there's a barcade in san fran.I actually live in vancouver so I just googled it. I just recently tried the "famous" EXP bar. it sucks, liquor/gaming laws mean customers can't play games so it just has a video game themed menu and shit on the walls + LoL is on the tvs.

on topic I've been to the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo twice, and I liked it. Its really fun to be able to bundle up and haggle with sellers in person. I found a lot of shit I don't normally see in the wild and everyone was nice enough to cut me deals on everything I bought

except someone made me pay sticker price of 10 dollars for mario 3. I was just waiting to buy it for like 5 dollars somwhere but couldn't wait any longer.

if you just go on craigslist and ebay you should be able to find some sellers in your area.

just tell them you want to have a dealers area at your con and don't gouge them for table rentals.

as for guests, if you don't know anybody then look for a nice humble e-celeb, or a down to earth game dev.

I was playing n64 smash bros and some other console games for most of the time. The prices in the dealer room were surprisingly not-too-much of a rip off. I walked out with a number of good NES games for $5 each and some lame ones for $3 each

Theres going to be some Retro Game Con going on in Portland in a few months. Anyone going?

I'd love to, but I don't know of any in Michigan. The closest I can get is anime conventions and JAFAX is usually fanatastic for retro imports.
