I've been playing SMT IV the past week or so, really getting into it. I've been considering looking into older games in the series. Would this be a good place to start?

>> No.1860965

>>1860950
So far it's not so bad. Of course you're going to be missing some features that, say, even SMT2 had, but it's a fun little romp. It's also more manageable than SMT1 because the encounter rate here isn't ridiculous (yet).

Since you have a 3DS, I might also recommend playing Soul Hackers since it's a pretty neat game and (at least for me) scratches the itch for a nice, quick PSX RPG. It's not a perfect game or even the best MT game, but it's fast and (relatively) easy.

SMT1 was personally the first game I tried out of the whole series and I liked it a bunch. I played it at a time where it was really neat to play an RPG that took place in current (read: 1992) day. It also had a darker story and a vibe that I liked a ton. Going back, I wouldn't really recommend the SNES version because it has a silly encounter rate, but I've heard good things about the PSX/GBA versions. I hear that the iOS port takes after both of these, so if you have an iOS device, go for it. It was like 7 or 8 bucks when I last checked it.

I have no idea how I handled that game post-Ginza the first time I played it. I replayed it just last year, and the game was just the worst encounter rate ever. I became so overleveled just from auto-fighting (no Estoma until the last dungeon because of my luck while fusing), that the final bosses were pretty close to three turn kills sans the ones that actually needed magic.

While that was my second time beating the first SMT, it pretty much killed my desire to try SMT2 (which I've never played) just because I didn't want to deal with that shit again. I mean, Iike the first game's set up and premise, but goddamn, that late game.

Not the guy you were responding to, but I'm also starting up SMT4 and thinking of going back and attempting SMT2 afterwards since it sounds like the encounter rate isn't dicks.

>> No.1861016

>>1861008
Also, I wasn't overleveled because I was intentionally grinding. It's just that there were that many battles and just killing the fuckers was usually faster than trying to run if I didn't have one already in my party to talk my way out.

New version release.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/am2k2uhbchw40bk/kmt_rc_081614_A.zip (Updated 8-16-14 2:03 AM CST)
081614_A

Fixes:

>Fixed save game screen displaying garbage characters for empty save slots.
>Fixed background not appearing for Big & Small minigame.
>Teleport screens (terminals, Royal Castle, Tranpa spell) now use a scrolling interface to display all options.
>Added subtitles for the MT1 and MT2 title screens.
>Various dialogue and text modifications.

>The translation is now entering the final stages before release. I have started labeling the patches as "release candidates", which means that, barring anything going wrong or no more input during the testing phase, it will be ready for release. I encourage anyone who might still want to affect the development of the translation by reporting bugs or translation errors: Please try out the patch and let me know of anything that needs to be changed. I will be playing through the game myself as well now, and hopefully by the time I finish (which may be a while since I'm a slow player :) ), it will finally be ready for a real release. Thank you everyone for all the help you've given, it has certainly paid off and this will be the product of everyone's cooperation.

Thanks for letting us know!

For anybody wondering, I replaced the old patch with the new patch and my save-game is still working. I use Snes9x if it matters. (I don't actually know where the save games are stored -- the rom file itself, like writing saves to the cartridge? A cache folder?) Will report back if I get any weirdness but I'm not expecting to.

>> No.1866131

You should use a new version of the rom. Ensure it has the same name as the old file.

The saves are stored as little files with the same name as the rom right beside it.

It has $80 bytes of sound RAM shared by channel registers and wavetable samples; at least $40 bytes are dedicated to samples, with more available if not all channels are used.

I'm at Valhalla and wondering if I should continue. Since the game is JUST a dungeon crawler, it should basically just be the same shit over and over again right? And it's basically just grinding and catching pokemon.

It has some nice ideas though, like the ability to talk to monsters. You can actually walk around high level dungeons, and with a bit of luck be able to negotiate your way out of fights. That adds a tiny bit more of a dimension to the fights since it gives you that option.

Eh, not so much. I guess it really depends on your tastes. SMT1 was my first and I'm enjoying MT1.

Some would tell you it's better to start off at the beginning because MT1 lacks a ton of features the later games have. I'm having fun with MT1 because I like both MT and dungeon crawlers. Honestly, MT1 feels like Etrian Odyssey/Wizardry mixed with Pokemon.

But yeah, you have a road ahead of you. Once you get deeper into the series, you'll start seeing more complex demon fusion and conversations. You can make some ridiculous demons with the right planning.

I'm an idiot. I thought you were talking about MT1 instead of SMT1/2.

Everything I just said honestly still holds up, though. The later SMT games are more complex than both 1 and 2. Although 1 probably has my favorite setting/storyline/general vibe in the series. Played Aeon Genesis' translation back in high school and the shit blew my mind.

It was a breath of fresh air after only playing RPGs like FF and Pokemon my entire life. Not that I'm trashtalking either of those series. I still enjoy them quite a bit.

So I've used rom patches before, but I just want to make sure, you have to rename this patch to the name of the rom in order to get it to work, right? Most patches I've downloaded were already named close to the game's title, not like this kmt_blahblahblah stuff. Just want to be safe

Just apply the patch to the rom using lunarIPS.

Never tried that before, but thanks

SNES roms are tricky. It's not really a problem anymore since every patch is pretty much basing itself off of the no-intro set, but older patches require headers and other shit, so just make sure you make a back up before patching.
