can we talk about retro emulation on phones? I know I'd get buttblasted on /v/ for this, but I just got an android and there is something legitimately amazing about putting my forgotten childhood backlog on my phone. what does /vr/ play, and what are your setups? I started modifying gamepad config files on retroarch to unclutter the psx, planning on doing the 64 next for pic related

Z is in a really bad position, should be along with B, A.

>> No.1866434

I emulated Chrono Trigger on my phone recently. The one or two button mashing sequences in the game were too hard to do on a touch screen but aside from that the game seemed like a good fit. I wouldn't want to play a 3D platformer like Rocket: Robot on Wheels though, on-screen sticks suck.

>> No.1866512

I don't know how anyone can bear using a touchscreen. I played through FF3 again on my phone and I still managed to fuck up inputs because of the touchscreen.

Dropped that shit as hard as I could and just got a PSP.

>> No.1866601

I can't imagine playing any n64 3d platformer would be fun with a touchscreen replicating the analog, especially one as finicky as that.

What the actual fuck.

>> No.1866616

I can only bother with turn based games because of the touch screen controls. Sometimes I wish I had one of the androids with a slide-out keyboard so I could at least map the buttons to the keypad.

Touch screens are, indeed, a drag on anything but the most computery console games. I fucked around with Bluetooth controllers for a couple years until I just bought myself a second device with built in controls that was approximately the same size and price used as a decent controller. Now I don't have to worry about wasting my phone's battery.

>> No.1866665

I just couldn't stand the touch screen controls and I was this close to give up on mobile gaming because of that.
Fortunately, I met a guy who sold me his old ipega controller for cheap and it works beautifully.

Pic related is called "gameklip" but it's just a piece of plastic that is sold for $20 or something, there are diy versions.

You can emulate pretty much anything on oldish devices, I have a Galaxy S3 and I've managed to emulate DC and PSP titles at full speed.

>> No.1867805

The nvidia shield is a 5" screen attached to a hybrid 360/playstation controller. It runs android, has a 10 hour battery, and plays odyssey through dreamcast without breaking a sweat.

It's pretty cheap, too.

The primary difference if I recall correctly is ghosting vs interpolation, not sure on the Go and E1000's own. If you want a new one, the best you'll get is a 3000 or a Go. PAL countries are fucked because they're stuck with pic related, a budget model replacing the 3000 that has mono speakers, no network capabilities, and no memory card cover. Still looks nice though.

Considering CFW is easy as piss to install and that you will want to load up on vidya, MicroSD to Pro Duo adapters exist so you can get massive storage for less, and the Go has DS3 controller support + 16 GB built-in storage but uses even smaller memory M2 cards if more data is required.

Yeah, no. If you want to use your phone to play, you better only play RPGs, Strategy games or something that doesn't require reflexes at all. Otherwise you're fucked.

This.

GO or 3000. Both emulate everything perfectly.

GO:
-has a smaller screen (same pixel density though).
-Built in 16 GB
-DS3 Support
-Internal / Non-replaceable battery
-Only charged via proprietary port
-Small and extremely portable

3000
-Bigger Screen
-Better Nub placement
-MicroSD to Pro Duo are cheap as fuark (can go up to 64 with a double slot)
-charge via proprietary port or usb
-Heavier

I like how OP posted the vaporwave of platformers and everybody is upset about precision. I've played plenty of turn based retro on my phone and it's great, especially since those are some of the longest games to trek through. nobody is suggesting you play castlevania on your phone, most platformera are <10 hours too so why wouldn't you play them on a TV?

Dont understand why anyone would want to emulate anything on a phone, touchscreen controls are god awful.

PSP's on the other hand go for about £15-20 these days, are easy as fuck to hack, and can run lots of emulators perfectly. The fact that any PS1 game runs flawlessly on it is reason enough to buy one, as well as the actual psp library being pretty decent. Somebody will probably point out N64 emu's aren't great, at least the last time i tried one anyway.

tldr: i love my psp.

best part is, people often sell them for peanuts when the umd drive stops working.
to the guy wanting to buy a psp i would seriously recommend this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PSP-CONSOLE-FAULTY-SPARES-REPAIRS-ONLY-/181497528058?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameConsoles_VideoGameConsoles&hash=item2a42187efa

His description doesnt outright say it but im sure the only thing wrong with it is the umd drive. If you look around you'll probs find one cheaper, maybe a nicer model, or maybe a nice white one. (my preference.) pic related

Most phones support USB, so a decent controller isn't hard to setup and use.
It's more about portability and power. The PSP can't even handle SNES emulation and only recently got a decent GBA emulator.

i said any ps1 game runs flawlessly which isnt exactly true. theres a wiki list somewhere of games which have some issues. what i meant to say was the majority of ps1 games run flawlessly. there is the issue of no R2 or L2 but remapped these to the d-pad/analog stick.

Had the chance to try the original sonic games on the new ipieceofshit and honestly, touch screen controls killed it. I'm sure it's great for JRPG's or what have you, but for any game that requires actual...controls, it's totally useless.

I always felt odd like that though, I see people playing games on their phones commuting to work, and there's me, with my actual gaming device. But I like having an actual camera instead of a cameraphone too. Games designed for touchscreen are fine, /vr/ with controls removed for shoddy touchscreens which are not a viable replacement for tactile buttons? No way.

also pressing against table/touchscreen phone screens gives you arthritis anyway.[/spoilers]

i emulate all the time when not at home, especially when on a plane. mostly RPGs or other games that don't require precise input.
pic related is beyond oasis on nexus 7, which i think has the perfect size and form factor for emulation.

Everything electronic is made in China. Sony, Nintendo, Apple, you name it. If it has a screen it's made in China. But for some reason Chinese is always the description used for a poorly designed device that cut corners during production. Might as well say it's a cheap Earth made device.

Since nobody is responding, I'm really considering the E1000 as a decent option. I don't care about mono or wifi and the screen looks better than the 3000.

I've taken to bringing my DS3 along with my tablet, but it isn't really worth doing with my phone
Which is a shame because I love the idea of playing some snes on my way to work

I was looking at this

There seem to be two methods of going about this:
>signing up for a free Dev account and using the code they give you on your Gamestick
>setting up a home server and shit to ensure that your Gamestick's firmware is downgraded
