A "bible" for any kind of end product (a game, a TV series, even a movie) is more like a design document. It details how things are supposed to be done. It's a guideline for the future of the project.

Being the (relatively) unprofessional chucklefucks they were, everyone else at id pretty much told Tom Hall to fuck off with his weird story shit, and then fired him, because their goals weren't meeting up

(Tom was also really annoying and used to piss off the super-serious Real Artist, Adrian Carmack. Their desks were next to each other and Tom wouldn't ever shut the fuck up and let Adrian do what he had to do.)

There would be no point in owning a physical copy of the "Doom bible" because it would just be 20-odd black and white pages of almost entirely text and filler bullshit. No, you misunderstand. For it to be a clone, it needs to be a ripoff. A Famiclone is a fake Famicom; however, a Twin Famicom manufactured by Sharp, which is an officially licensed Famicom with built-in Disk System, is not a Famiclone. It's just a Famicom variation.

On the topic of my WAD from yesterday, though. I still haven't got an IRC client downloaded, because I'm a faggot who ruins boot sectors, so question goes here instead.
In my map, I have an Arachnotron that opens a door/drops a plasma rifle on death.
The thing is, it only drops the plasma rifle if YOU kill it--if a Hellknight gets to it first, you don't get the plasma rifle and it's much harder to kill off the Cyberdemon later on.
Right now, I'm using ACS to make the Arachnotron drop the plasma rifle, along with open the door. If I use DECORATE to change the Arachnotron so that he drops plasma rifles, will that make him drop the plasma rifle even if a Hellknight is the one that kills him? What about Dehacked?

Bah. Here's my first map. Without any lighting adjustments. Because I sort got burnt out, having worked 3 weeks on it.

I guess it's a bit challenging? Didn't put much thought into medkit positioning. Still, for future stuff, I'd like some feedback.

Oh yeah, the Supershotgun you can only get as part of a secret. Same goes for the plasma gun. Some are obvious, some a bit obscure, but I think a Doom veteran (which I am not) won't have a lot of problems.

I played it.
It was pretty dang alright. The level design played well, it wasn't all that difficult though. I liked the openness of it and the variety of environments.

I suggest removing all the little crates from the floor of the crate room. Also, on the cavern area with the rock texture, one of the pinky demons is stuck in the wall and cannot move. Also, enable jumping and crouching.

That's good to hear. I think the problem was spreading myself too thin, to do something different with every room. I guess you could tell from the server room and the connected hallway that I went crazy there with detailing, and then lost the energy for the later rooms. I also made the mistake thinking of flow and enemy placement last.

Not having enough blood sugar also might have helped with my increased dissatisfaction.

I disabled jumping and crouching because it would have made reaching one of the secrets too easy. How many did you find, by the way? Or at least the super shotgun.

I kinda agree with >>1859492 about the ammunition, but to me it was more like a love-hate relationship. Sometimes I REALLY enjoyed having to perform multikills and fistfights to conserve ammo, but towards the end it kinda became a pain.

Also I noticed a minor HOM in the chaingunner elevator room with the 3 health packs. If you go inside the medkit room and turn right, you can see that the door-end of the table has an untextured line.

For a first level, I think it's really good, and although the difficulty seemed easy at a first glance, the lack of ammo had me fisting lost souls with 1HP and 0 bullets by the end of the map. Keep up the good work!

The map really becomes easy with secrets. Here's a list:

1: Main Room: Use the pipes at the back of the pillar.
2: Storage Hall: Use the computer pillar facing the door to the main hall. This will lower a crate in the lower left part of the room.

That doesn't really sound as bad as my case. In the outside area, I decided to make a run for it straight ahead and get to the elevator, because I was already very low on ammo. I went up and wasted all of my rockets on the Barons, except one, which I've fired down into the elevator shaft back at the demons that I've lured inside. I kept luring them to the elevator until I've completely ran out of shells. I decided finish them off, so I jumped down without knowing I had a couple of Cacos and Elementals waiting for me, besides the few Imps. I've emptied my chaingun into them, and after that, I've wasted 3 entire minutes getting the Lost Souls to infight. Once all of them was dead, I went towards the elevator again with about 30HP, ready to exit.... except I had no idea that one of the pain elementals actually escaped, and was waiting for me up there. A lost soul hit me and I had only 1 HP left....I've never hauled ass to the exit so quickly before, haha.

The lights are there because, had I given a toss about lighting the map, they would have been the light source, and the lighting would have reflected that.

You are not supposed to get into that dead end passage. It's just there to show you that the sewage comes through another underground flow.

I don't think the textures in the computer room look offputting due to cutting off. But that depends on the eye of the beholder I guess.

Another anon here, I'll gladly give you a list of a few simple critiques I have

>using the exit door texture for openable doors, not a big deal but throws the player off and may cause them to miss things

>the scattered supply rooms was a decent idea but they're too easy to get into and needed more ammo than health
>the puddles effect didn't work at all, and wasn't really necessary to establish that you were in the showers
>the boxes area, the sewers area with the chainguns, and the blue keycard area all had terrible cover issues. The box traps didn't work because nothing could hit you, you had no cover from the chaingunners, and you didn't have room to maneouvre around projectiles, respectively
>the Cacodemons in the sewer chaingunner took too long to rise up to attack the player, so they were almost pointless

As per textures, I play a lot of maps, so I see it all. I'm use to people usually bordering textures or at least using them properly. I dont know how long you've been playing Doom so far, but I've been playing for 15 years now and 99% of the maps I play are way too easy on UV, its mainly because the most maps I played are very similiar.

Sometimes, there are also really difficult maps. They are a real challenge.

>Fatsos / Arachnotron are far away, annoying as fuck
>Chaingunners behind invisible walls start shooting
>Cyberdemon in a room with many many pillars
>Spidermastermind in a large ass room with many decorate obstacles (can shoot through, but not walk through)
>Surrounded and clawed by Imps

For each situation, you need some sort of plan, else you are already dead, it also depends on the weapons you have equipped.

Yes, Doom is quite hard, you need a lot of experience.
Just keep playing, before you enter a room, look for hidden passages or look at the automap and look if the wall lines are a bit different from the others, that means its most likely a door or a lift that will lower and monsters will attack you (its a trap).
Thats all I can tell you.

Protip: If Doom is still way too easy for a pro like you, turn sv_fastmonsters on, it gets really difficult, especially if there are zombies, they shoot immediately, Demons will rape your arse because they are twice as fast etc.

I use Zdoom and GZdoom on Linux Mint 17 (found some .deb packages on some place I can't remember). Jumping and crouching gives you a ridiculous more amount of room to deal with any projectiles though

Example:
A billion fireballs from Hellknights coming in at you at Doomguy's height level.
Crouching lets you avoid all of them with no effort, don't even have to move. It will go over his head.

Another example
Revenant rockets are homing in on you.
You can jump and crouch and it will make the rockets steer into the floor

Third example
Projectiles are coming at you.
You can jump and strafe and they will aim high, letting you stand underneath the projectiles as a safespot

Another thing is that jumping gives you a speed boost.
You could also hide behind very low cover to avoid Archviles and you can hide behind very low decorations to have projectiles hit that instead.

Jumping was not anticipated at all when the IWAD levels were designed, because the vanilla engine didn't support jumping. Impassable should be used to stop the player from getting stuck (jumping out windows or what not), or blocking mid textures. That's about it really... If you don't want jumping to break the gameplay you just have to build around it. If they use a lower gravity or something, or some other mod that breaks the level, tough shit. Not much you can do about that. You can't stop cheating either.

Doom 2 because the level design is pure ass.

I enjoy TNT for some of its really extensive and massive levels and the fucking great new soundtrack. Plutonia I sorta like for its difficulty and atmosphere. Both TNT and Plutonia have their fair share of good and bad levels but I think Doom 2 is just all-round bad and unmemorable, the only good things it brought to the table were the new enemies and the super shotgun.

Doom 1 is still my favourite out of all of them, Knee Deep in the Dead especially. I like Shores of Hell and Inferno less so and Thy Flesh Consumed even less (not even because of its xbox huge difficulty, but because it's just kinda outside of the original Doom's theme, and borrows from Doom 2 a lot more, which I dislike).

If we're speaking on ALL iwads, then Hacx. What a hunk of shit. The setting is cool, the design is cool, the sounds are mostly alright, but by god that level design is a fucking disaster, especially the later levels. The weapons are almost as bad since they seem to lack any sort of punch whatsoever (I do like the mighty boots though despite this, lel).

One mod that was super-popular a while ago was Ancient Magic, but it had to be completely rehauled from the ground up--the modded version of Ancient Magic was a huge hit and people loved it, but I'm not including it in the list because of the same reason.

I'm a musician. I've released 5 major releases and a bunch of EPs and other shit inbetween. I like the idea that someone can see my name and track my shit; they can see how I evolved through my work.

Sure, things can "stand on their own" but it's more interesting to examine things in context than it is in the vacuum.

If I just post a map, it's just some map by some random fuck. If I post a map and it has my name on it, people who've played my other maps can see how it is in comparison to my other maps, and better give me feedback regarding them. "This is missing some of the things you did in your other maps that I liked," or "This is much better than your last map."

They did a pretty good job of the Nazi's actually. Any other game with Nazi's as villains doesn't really give you a reason to hate them aside from "They're nazis, you know what you have to do".
