I've seen some really mixed reviews of this game and Legacy of Darkness. What do you guys think of these games?

They are nowhere as bad as people make it out be other than a very shitty camera. I would have liked for the series to have gone in this direction instead of rehashing Symphony of the Night ad nauseum and aping beat 'em ups in 3D sequels

It's okay, only proceed if you are a Castlevania fan

I would argue the opposite. The game doesn't follow any previous game's cannon

>> No.1857697

if you can tolerate early 3D games this is pretty fun with good atmosphere

'dis gaem is so bad xd' is practically a meme now

I loved it even though the part with the explosives almost gave me an ulcer.

Also, skeletons in motorcycles, how could anyone hate that?

My brother borrowed C64 from someone when we were kids. I remember liking the game a lot back then, I think I got pretty far into it, but never beat it. Fond memories of it, should probably pick it up again.

I enjoyed them a lot. You get two characters in the original, each with different play styles, levels and storylines. There's a bunch of little mechanics that are fun to mess with because they alter the final boss rush (the contract, days and nights, etc).

Legacy of Darkness is a Director's Cut of sorts. You get an extra character (the only one available at the start) with his own playstyle and new levels. After that you unlock the two original characters plus a rescue mode of sorts. The only thing it's missing is the far superior original opening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kekitaCO6Wk)) and a few voiceovers. Disabling the original characters at the start kind of hurts the experience, too, because the new story spoils a bunch of stuff from the original plot. And the only thing going for the original plot were the twists. But this is just minor nitpicking, who plays Castlevania for the plot anyway?

Their bad points: the camera takes a lot of work to get used to and that makes platforming harder than it actually is. Both have a few huge open-ended levels at times, which is disorienting for some. Some aspects feel unfinished (which they are, especially in the original one because that was pushed for an early release), there's a certain lack of polish in a lot of areas.

But both are also really atmospheric, and this is where they truly shine. The music, the setting, it all works, even the crazier stuff like bike skeletons. There's a genuine feeling of dread in some points. Plus the difficulty is nice.

On a slightly unrelated note, the devs were the ones behind Circle of the Moon, which is by far my favorite metroidvania. Maybe I just like their style.

Well, Castlevania never really worked in 3D, for one.
But that aside, I enjoyed CV64. I agree with the common opinion here, atmosphere is great, the camera has some issues.
I really enjoyed the Villa and Castle Hall levels due to their survival horror elements.
The gameplay itself is actually not that bad, other than the camera issue, the controls are a lot better than many other 3D games of the time. I like how you can jump back or sideways to evade attacks. The main problem with the camera is in platforming sections. Most of the times you die in this game is by falling on pits.

I thought the nitro sequence wasn't even that bad, pretty easy once you figure what path you should take. (which isn't even a long one). However that level was long as fairly hard, but also one of my favorites.

I'd say, for the time, it's a decent action game, and as a Castlevania title is a very interesting title due to the setting and characters. But again, Castlevania doesn't work in 3D gameplay-wise. At least this was better than the new ones.

Throughly enjoyed it. Not quite sure what everyone means by the shitty camera... But I haven't played it for ages.

Really atmospheric.

The camera is mostly an issue during platforming parts. Sometimes you can't calculate your jump correctly and end up falling. But honestly this was an issue with most games of the time.

Yeah, it also lacks a dedicated jump button and proper platforming sections.

Castlevania 64's camera is actually not THAT bad, in fact, you can switch between 3 different camera styles, and adjust the camera to the back of your character bu pressing R (the same as in Zelda when you press Z), but the problem comes in some tricky platforming sections where the camera can't be adjusted and it becomes hard to tell the distance.
