Hey /vr/!
Next month I'll start playing video games with a good college friend at my place. We basically want to play some RPGs together and other fun games (no homo).

I'm thiking of Vay to start with a hard rpg (based WD), Ninja Gaiden for a fun one player sidescroller, and Goemon's Great Adventures (name might be wrong, it's the second n64 game) for co-op sidescroller.

Do you guys have ideas on good games we might want to play? (I have a psx, saturn, 64, dreamcast, nes, super nes, megadrive, pc-engine -hu card + cd-, sega cd, msx, neo geo CD, and getting games isn't much of a problem)

My friend's not overly hardcore, but he's an enthusiast and knows his shit, so I was thinking of following those by some Xenogears (since it's been 12+years since I played it), Front Mission, or Mana games.

Come on man, I don't want a boring list based on scores, just games that you think would be good.

Well, you already a co-op game, so I'd like to suggest something for vs. Trap Gunner on the PSx. It's a 3d top down where, while you do have basic projectile and melee attacks, is really more more than anythign about laying down traps for your opponent and setting them up in combinations. Sorta like a more arcadey, less grimdark deception. Every character starts out with their load out of traps they have by default and with differing basic attacks, so it's kinda like a fighting game or Twisted Metal in that regard.

I'm sure I could think of other things, but I'm pretty sleep deprived right now.

Oh this >>1850187 anon again. Blaze and Blade might be worth looking into since you were talking about getting into an RPG. It's a top down action RPG with co-op, though Legend of Mana is great for RPG co-op also though its side view like a beat 'em up.

And if you want to get the pc engine out, there's always Dungeon Explorer.

>> No.1850356

Blaze and Blade is an awful, awful game.

>> No.1850359

>>1850212

Thanks for the suggestions, man. Trap Gunner seem kinda weird, and I already completed Blaze & Blade (which was bad, like most T&E games), but Dungeon Explorer actually seems good. Like Gauntlet, but without the bullshit...

>> No.1850389

Final Fantasy 6 for PS1 has a real neat 2-player co-op mode. In the options menu, you can set which player controls which character in battle. Player 1 always controls overworld movement. I did this with a friend once, it's real fun having to think up strategies together.

You two should play Mr. Dick Suck Adventures. It's a compelling RPG although a little awkward to play with your friend, especially if one of you finishes the game early.

Goddamn it Why don't you suck each others dick already.

When two men are facing a video game system there is no room for gay shits like having fun.
It time for a motherfuckin SHOWDOWN for the alpha male statue.

For example You have a Neogeo? add to that it CD ver with it long ass loading between each round. Perfect now grab a fighting game and don't try to take something like a KOF or Samsho, Choose something where you can't have the slightest bit of fun.
I recommend you aggressors of dark kombat with it frustrating 3 layer button system (2 for punch/kick one for the fuckin jump) the annoying grappling system (all the characters are grapplers) and the limited frame to avoid them
It should be perfect to nourish the bonds of animosity and hate between you two.

The rest is on your hands OP.

I'd suggest grabbing a copy of Super Double Dragon/double dragon returns, I prefer DDR but you might have to find a work around to get it playing but it's the superior version.
My gf and I played through it a few times in fact we play a lot of brawlers and beat em ups since it's relatively easy to get them and it doesn't take a whole lot of effort

>> No.1850746

>>1850720

Noted, thanks. We already completed a handful of brawlers at the arcade (the two D&D, cadillac & dinosaurs, alien vs. predator, knights of the round, that game where you control robots and can change parts, etc...), so it should be good.

Definitely play the Mana games, they're great for multiplayer. What i'd do to play the Mana games with friends, all of my friends are uninterested. It's not an RPG, but Pocky and Rocky is very fun with friends, though carts are pricey. Contra 3 and The Legend of The Mystical Ninja are great too.

Well, if you want fun co-op JRPGs, Legend of Mana and Tales of Eternia (Destiny II in the US) are pretty nice as far as what the PS1 offers. The latter is pretty expensive though if you want an actual copy, since it didn't see a huge print run, while Legend of Mana is more reasonably priced (and unlike Eternia, has a PSN version as well if you don't mind digital ports).

>> No.1852782

>>1852105

Man, I played the game so many years ago... shit was insane, but I couldn't adapt to the terrible controls so I never got past a few screens.

>>1852315

Pocky and Rocky is indeed fun, we plan on playing it later. We already completed Contra 3 (Super Probotector for us), and I feel kinda foolish for never noticing that you can co-op on the first Mystical Ninja, we definitely do this, my friend loves those games since I lended him Goemon 64 (the first one).

>>1852448
I already have Legend of Mana, we'll give it a try. I'm kinda wary of the Tales games since the new ones feel really dumb, but it you say it might be good...

>>1852298
:^)
(I don't care if they fucked with the dialogues, since I'm not american I would have missed a good localization anyway... I just hate that they fucked around with the balance in so many games, especially Silhouette Mirage and Popful Mail)

The thing to keep in mind with Tales is that generally the stories aren't what the games have going for them, but rather the characters, interaction, and solid gameplay. That said, I thought Eternia handled it's story decently well, and the pacing was pretty good too (whereas some like Abyss, much as I like the game, suffer from some rather obvious pacing issues throughout. Just do some research or maybe emulate it a bit to see if you think you guys might enjoy it, since it is a rather expensive game to actually buy unless you're a fan of the series.

As far as the multiplayer goes, just make sure to get the "manual manual" or whatever it's called from a side room at the dojo in the first hour or so in the game. I don't think you can outright miss it, but it is required to obtain if you want to do co-op, not to mention not being stuck on semi auto (though again, the good news is that's quite early in the game, and is not a forced equip like the technical rings in earlier games, rather an option from the menu like in later games instead), so getting it early is preferable. Also, Reid and Farah are generally the more fun of characters to play as, hence the game being a bit better suited to two player co-op as opposed to three or four player (though the option for that many is there).

But poor story + good gameplay = star ocean

>> No.1852973

>>1852951
I wouldn't entirely say that the stories are outright bad (they're usually at least acceptable for driving the game forward, though a few games handle them better), just that they're not what you're playing the games for in most cases. And Tales has the perk of being one of the few long-running JRPG series to allow for co-op (especially since the Mana series is pretty much dead these days).

Also, since you brought up Star Ocean, it's worth noting on the off chance you didn't know that Tri-Ace stemmed from a part of Wolf Team, who worked with Namco on some of the older Tales games (including Phantasia SNES; supposedly changes Namco was forcing on them during development led to the group that would later become Tri-Ace leaving Wolf Team), likely leading to some of the similarities one might find between the two gameplay-wise.
