There was a parallel port addon that let you play VCD, like the Saturn's MPEG card. The 3DO also had an MPEG card addon that let it play VCDs. My Sony DVD player shits the bed and freaks out when I put a VCD in it, but it doesn't say that it plays VCDs.

LaserDisc spindle holes are considerably larger than CD spindle holes. I don't have one of those vinyl kadjiggers either. LD digital audio tracks resemble CD audio but I don't think they're exactly compatible.

They really can play laserdiscs, you just need to mod them properly.
First you need to replace the case with a laserdisc one so it fits. Make sure it fits right. Then you switch out the laser attachment and tweak some of the screws so you can yank out the mainboard and the power board. Put the new board and power into the new playstation case making sure you're using the right board, then you switch out your controller with a remote and you're pretty much ready to go. Plays Laserdiscs like it was practically built to do it. Give it a try some time.

It's actually quite amazing what you can with a bit of electronics experience and a little effort.
