So a few days ago someone asked me why I waste my money on old instead of having a newer console and now I really wonder, why are we so drawn to playing games we used to own again or older games in general? Is it just plain nostalgia or do they really have some charm or quality that modern games lack?

More fun games. We already know what all the good titles are so it's easier to go back to those great games instead of wading through shit.

I never once implied that

>wasting money on old
Unless you have extremely bizarre and specific taste and only play expensive games like Earthbound, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Panzer Dargoon Saga, how is buying older games more expensive than buying newer games?

I'm actually 15 and I enjoy old games without the nostalgia.

I love everything "old".

I spend so much fucking time learning and reading about old things, building things with old methods and discovering how the people from the past did things.

And I love videogames.

So for me is just two interests mixing, and leading to much fun.

Yeah I feel the same way

Well I was talking to my dead about how I hoped the games I ordered on amazon would get here before I had to travel and asked me why I don't use that money to get a PS4 instead since all my friends already have one

Think about how many games have been made since video gaming became a household hobby.

Now think about how many games are 'new' or from the previous and current generation.

I have a feeling, and I'm sure there are numbers to back this up somewhere, that the amount of new games is but a small fraction of every game ever made. So it makes sense that some people will play games that are older. Whether you factor in nostalgia or personal preference, it will always be this way, not because older is better. Just like movies, people watch them all the time, and nobody thinks anything of it.

It also doesn't help to limit your scope to a board strictly focused on older games.

It's a classic case of things appearing larger than they are, once you're on the inside.

It's the same reason why people tend to like 80s-90s movies: there's a certain style that's unique and that permeates the medium.

Also, I love the artistic direction of Japanese game designers during the late 80s-90s that is so close but so different from American sensibilities.

That attitude is just as toxic and pretentious as dismissing classic gaming because they're old kiddie shit.

Its half nostalgia and half "this game is actually FUN or CHALLENGING".

the last "retro" game I bought was Body Harvest for the N64, and I just got Kirby's 20th Anni compilation, so I'm playing through Kirby's Dream Land right now. Never played any Kirby except Superstar and Adventure on the Wii, so its nice being able to get a little bit of history and playing through them.

Also another sad though. I just got a new TV recently so I can use it as my main PC monitor, but these new suckers I believe do not even come with composite inputs. So I have to use the only CRT in the house if I ever want to play N64, NES, or Dreamcast again.

Also it dawned on me a depressing though that it seems to me that the more we play the newer machines, the more wear they take and the less likely that they are to last through the years.

It is a little absurd, considering that a machine like the NES has people creating 72-ping connectors so people can continue to play their games.

But then again I guess people still make turntables and needles for vinyl.

I like a lot of old games for their "pick up and play"ness.

You just pop it in and you can start playing. No stupid developer's logos, 15 minute intro movies, tutorial levels. Of course a lot of old games had these things too but never to the extent of those in modern games.
