To mappers : how is your building process? in what order do you build things? Do you 100% each room room-by-room or do you build a sketch of the general layout WITH gameplay ideas first ?

I'm asking because I'm currently going through a shift of my mapping process.
While I was building this room for Shadow Warrior map, as I wanted to implement interesting shading, I told to myself I did it all wrong again. I mean, I thought I got the ENTIRE building process wrong (and have been for a long time). I built the detailing too early on; and as a result, even though it's not UBER detailed, there is definitly too many sectors in this room to implement strong, more interesting shading.

(In the end, I resorted to SW's "fading" lighting : each 'stall' with a table has its own lightsource, which slowly and constantly fades in/out, but without too strong differences in the value of the shading, and the end result gives a rather warm and cozy atmosphere.)

But even if I like the end result, this got me to completely re-think the way I map. It's something I wanted to do for this map already, but old habits kicked in again (like when I built this restaurant room).
Basically, I used to build pretty much one room after the other, and detail each room to the max; and shading would almost always come at the end of the process, and I often had no idea how gameplay would be while building what I did.

Now, I have started mapping using a new process, doing overall layout of an entire area first alongside gameplay ideas (and I try not to be afraid to test the gameplay idea by implementing the enemies inside a rough sketch of what the final area will be, to test gameplay before detailing/shading or even texturing) ; then implement the light sources and the kind of shading I want, and finally detailing at the very last.

I believe this kind of mapping is more 'pro' and will make for better maps. Or at least, maps that feel more like the original games, which is what I'm aiming for.

Layout and structure are absolutely needed for good architecture, which directly influences the gameplay and how your map looks. If your layout is shit, your map almost always will be shit. Master layouts.

In mobility based games like Doom or Build Engine Games the layout will always be key.

Also master making a map and then completely deleting that map because it's crap.

I also added a little bathroom, like the shower room, it's the rough basic. I tend to create the most important geometry first, and leave the detailing work (including textures) for last, after I decided on the basic way through the map, optional areas, and placed the essential items and puzzles.

Layout the level in 2d only, looking at it top down on the automap. Does it connect together? Does it flow? Does it actually feel conducive to Doom's strengths.

Structure is adding 3d to the layout, the height variation and vertical nature of the map.

Architecture is the macro detail, the stuff that's not directly used by the player but still influences the game play and visuals. Ledges that the player can't get to but you can put monsters on for interesting crossfires and what not.

Gameplay is obvious.

Detail is the micro stuff. Lighting, texture usage, stuff like that. Things that only serve to enhance the map's presentation not the gameplay. It should never impact the gameplay and your map should look decent without it.

I'm primarily a musician, so in a lot of ways I probably approach levels differently than other people. When you're structuring a song, sometimes you just start at the beginning and write through until you get to the end. Other times, you start because you've written the chorus already--there's a cool melody or a couple of lines that you like and that becomes the big part of the song that people are gonna be into.

Doom levels are the same way. Sometimes you can start off with the beginning building and just build the whole level from there, and gameplay elements come and go as you do it, the way little ideas for the song will come along as you do it. ("There's this cool drum part in the second verse," or "There's this really neat sector trick in the red key room.") Other times, I start building it off from the big "attraction room" which probably has some gameplay ideas set up in it. Other times I sit down with a theme in mind and already know how the level's going to develop.

Sometimes I detail a room immediately after I build it, because I know what's going there. Other times, I build the layout of the room and populate it with some simple stuff, because this room is just sort of there inbetween other rooms, and I'll light it and detail it later on.

They'll accept anything and they churn out a bunch of projects that are quickly forgotten within a year or so. A good place to go if you want to make maps, not a good place to go if you want to learn to be a good mapper.

Zdoom:
Like the Doomworld hugbox except far more creative freedom. Map design is usually terrible but lots of interesting gameplay projects.

The Doom Snob Scene:
Basically the BTSX people. Rampant elitism and dickery but I've seen them occasionally prop up new mappers.

With that kind of attitude it probably will be. I mean, if you're doing a "tell me why I suck, I want to improve" submission then sure that's fine. But if you really want to make something decent (not great necessarily, but decent) you should have enough experience playing maps at least to know what you think you have to offer. My first map was fairly vanilla but I worked hard to make it better than "My First Map.wad" efforts.

All that said, map preferences can be very personal. If you make Slaughterfest 7452 I won't give it a second glance, but if you make something simpler that happens to scratch my particular itch, there's no reason why a first-time mapper can't make something fun. There's a lot of crap out there, strive to be better than it.

My advice for starting:

1) Make (and keep) a shitty scratchpad map, never intended for release. Basically just to fuck around with sectors and textures, experiment with effects and triggers. Spend a little time hooking up a few rooms and get some doors and switches working.

2) For your first real map, don't try to make something huge and epic or super high-concept. Maybe come up with an idea you think would be neat and try to make a smallish map that executes it really well. By keeping it small you can submit it for feedback and iterate; even if you change big chunks of it, it won't ruin anything. What will also happen is that as you go along, your first rooms will beg to be redone as your mapping improves. Keeping it small means you can always do another pass.

Personally, I find that sketching layouts on paper helps a lot.

The bar goes up depending on how many dudes you slash in a row, so maps with sparse enemy placement (like the original Doom 1 maps), you probably won't ever get it to go up. For larger maps with lots of dudes like later Scythe levels, you'll get it up pretty easily.
The hammer's ammo freezing is...definitely not intended, so thanks for letting me know. I'm not entirely sure what's causing it, though. I'm gonna have to see if I can fiddle with that.

And yes, I've definitely considered it--it's actually already in! Push the Run button and a direction and you'll throw yourself that way, passing harmlessly through enemy shots.

Basically, you need to equip a shield body, a battery, and a capacitor. Then you can press the activate shield key (It's in the DRPG keybinds) and it'll turn on. Everytime you equip a shield bit, it shows what effect it has on your overall shield stats, it's pretty awesome.

Yeah I realized that even on UV, the chainsaw is making what should be ammo-tight encounters into breezes. I replaced it with a clip box.

So I bought this for £6.50. I reckon it's a steal. Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Master Levels, Another Doom II thingie, Plutonia and TNT all in one package.

I tried to get my silly friend to buy it but he wouldn't, oh well.

It runs great (as it damn well should, of course) and playing it on console actually feels really great. It really has the classic look of Doom about it, rather than the OpenGL look GZDoom has. Also playing it with dual analog feels closer to how it felt the first time I played Doom back in the KB only days. It's obviously better than that but not as good as KBM (and you can't adjust the look sensitivity), so it controls between original Doom KB only and Doom with WASD+Mouse. It makes it slightly more challenging as Doom with KBM is way too fucking easy on UV. You get vibration when you shoot, too, and playing this badboy in bed is great.

Yeah. A lot of Zdoom maps from my experience are either chockfull of Realm667isms or stray too far away from Doom gameplay (not that thats inherently wrong. its just not my thing). In the odds that I do like them, they can often end up still having the problem of not even mentioning jumping/freelook as required features.

Its just easier going with Vanilla/Limit Removing/Boom maps since I generally know what to expect, and never have to adjust my controls and such in the event that I require jumping/freelook.

QUESTION

Would loading a previous character from a full Doom 2 run using Doom RPG + DoomRLA cheapen the experience of another wad? I don't want to completely destroy everything, but I also don't want to give up the character I worked on.

Also, with the whole DoomRPG + DoomRLA compatibility, I don't see an option for enabling compatibility in DoomRPG options. Despite that, they seem to run mostly fine- except I can't spawn Marines, stims don't seem to work, nor shields. And a few items seem to not exist (there's an assembly for a chainsword using combat knife, despite neither weapon existing AFAIK). Did I somehow fuck up my load order?

I've been playing through it and it's frustratingly full of so many sins of level design, continually using really cheap traps like teleporting hitscanning or tough enemies in (frequently behind the player) with no room to dodge effectively, confusing map layouts which vary from sort of resembling a place to the usual utterly abstract style (within the same map), sparse health placement combined with the trap monster and section problems, secrets that you really need an automap to discover because they're not actually differentiated from the background in any way at all or even placed in predictable positions (and the pickups are frequently needed) most of the time, areas with damaging floors that are essential to go into whilst being awkward to navigate speedily, have enemies in them and no mitigating pickups or replacement health... hell even the music is largely poor and unfitting.

And yet it's consistently got 5 star reviews.

What do I do after I flip the switch behind the yellow barricade and dispatch the last two spider demons in the main chamber?

So I played it. I wish I had remembered to take screenshots, so take this instead.

And it was really really cool. It's probably one of the most atmospheric and bleak feeling maps I've ever played. I love the gray, dark cloudy sky, and the haunting, gloomy ambient track, along with the generous use of pale dark grass and growth, and mud, a lot of the map feels really natural and lifelike in a sense, even though it's done in Doom, like I really was out in the forest/sticks/bush, searching, traveling, fighting monsters.
The urban/industrial complex parts, and the powerplant parts, have a lot of detail put into them, it's all very convincing.

If it wasn't for the massive processor hog it already is, I'd almost suggest a rain effect or something, to seal the deal 100%

Has the author done anything else? I loved it.
My only complaint is two-fold, that it's very memory intensive, there's lots and lots and LOTS of Things used as undergrowth, shrubbery and grass, it looks great, but it's really taxing on ones processor, and the other is that it's easy to get lost, and hard to figure out where you're supposed to go. Initially, this isn't the biggest problem, as you'd be so busy just exploring the map anyway, it's incredibly detailed and clever, and you'll spend at least an hour or two on the whole thing.

I figure, maybe if the maps were split up into Hubs or something, it would be less draining, because it's a HUMONGOUS fucking map, it's easily as big as all of E1 put together. I only played on HNTR because I figure any more monsters and I couldn't actually play it with my laptop (and I guess with less monsters, it made the map feel more lonely and gloomy).

I was inspired when I saw a "Chainsaw" Shotgun pump at a local gun store, instantly thought of doom, and the implications of attaching a chainsaw to the bottom.

If it hasn't been made, could it? Would be sweet to have in doom1 and 2 where it acts as the chainsaw but also uses your shotgun ammo and reloads respectively.

i'm totally new to doom modding and custom .wads. I played a little of Brutaldoom, wich was alright. (But not the lmao i can't play the original ever again people made it out to be.) i especially though the sounds were very annoying, the repeating zombie and imp screams in particular.

Although i remember seeing footage ( for example here http://youtu.be/AHA-slBtPYo?t=5m20s The taunt is a totally different voice) where it had a more classic overproduced feel to it instead of the teenager trying to sound cool voice it had. Anyone know wich version i should be looking for? I vaguely remember a Sperglord edition or is that something entirely different?
