Is there still going to be a market for old games in 20 years time? Will people still care about long begone hardware and games by then? Will all the games I own reach a peak price within 10 years?

I'm really worried that my collection of games, which I've spent years and hundreds of dollars worth on will be worth nothing more than the equivalent of some ugly, unknown antiques, just like some many other obsolete formats in the past.

Something only has value if it is wanted by someone. in the future, when almost nobody knows about these things, will they even have value?

I remember looking at a video of an oldman who collects old image discs like those made for a view master but really old, like something from the 20's or 30's you could really see his dedication and care for his stuff and how he talks with passion about his hobby, even then i don't really care about his stuff, we have HD movies who is gonna go back to these ancient things

and then i realized the same would happen to me someday

is short this is gonna be the stuff that looks cool on a museum, but not so great upon trying it

There's a thing called emulation now grandpa time to bury that shit in mexico.

I'm gonna be honest with you, man:

If you're only into retro vidya for the value/price, then you've picked the wrong hobby to get into. If value and money is what you're mainly concerned about, I would recommend investments in stocks and real estate.

That being said, I think there will always be a market for physical media, especially games

Look at it this way: when you die they'll collect in a shed, and some pickers will eventually find them and sell them for more than you bought them for. Eventually they'll find their way into someone who will care for them.

Your games may not be worth it now, but they will be worth it in keeping the lore alive down the road.

I love games and I love playing on the original hardware. That's why I collect in the first place. But when I see how unreliable the hardware is, and how expensive some of the rare single games I've bought (sometimes up to $600) and it really make me worried.

I'm a big fan of music too, and I know they suffer from a lot of the same problems from records and music equipment from the 40s and before.

>When you die
I got a better way of looking at it. First, if you are collecting because you think they will hold value, you are doing it wrong because there are plenty of other ways to either grow or maintain money like buying gold or gold stocks/other stocks. If you are collecting for your own enjoyment, then you really shouldn't give that many shits about the value unless you expect your pension to not be enough for retirement or you expect that in 20 years you will be fired and have to auction your stuff off to pay the mortgage.

Lastly, you will die. No doubt about it. The value of your shit to people in the future won't mean a damn thing to you if you aren't there.

TL;DR: collecting with the expectation to sell is folly.

Nigga who cares? The only people who should worry about that are the ones who wanna just resell their stuff to make a profit. Just enjoy your video games anon.

That's why you should try to find deals first and foremost. Don't go and blow your funds on games if you think it's a bad investment... Sonic says.

why would you invest in one single commodity instead of creating a diverse portfolio

>> No.1822234

Because he suggested it as part of creating a diverse portfolio? Its based in the us but shit gets complicated if you invest offshore, most 401ks don't even have an option for it

No it won't be worth it, because you're a faggot.

>Something only has value if it is wanted by someone.

It's YOUR fucking collection. Why the fuck aren't you wanting it? Play the fucking games, enjoy yourself. That's why you bought it right? Right?

Why the fuck else would collect shit? If your answer is to trade it for money then get the fuck out you don't belong here. This isn't a trading board, it's a board for retro GAMERS. People who actively give a shit about the things.

>Your games may not be worth it now...

How about playing games without worrying the monetary value down the road. You shouldn't have to wonder about if they are going to be valuable in the future because it should be valuable to you in the here and now. If you're collecting that alone should be worth it

What I've begun to do is spend as much as I can into RGB modding non rgb consoles to get the best picture, then buying everdrives for each. I needed an everdrive for my SNES the other day so I sold my gamecube component cables for that cash.

At least we'll be able to emulate old games. Pirates will be the saviors of gaming history, providing millions of games through dutiful ripping of roms and ISOs.

Shame that so many computer games and architectures are a pain in the ass to emulate or keep running. Old windows games and amiga emulation come to mind.

>> No.1823374

Video games and gold are both at all time, unsustainable high values right now. Investing in either for the long term is something only an idiot would do. If you think society is going to collapse (which it would need to for gold to go much higher) invest in ammunition instead.
