Favorite Zelda?

>> No.1809072

Link's Awakening for sure.

LA is very simple and charming, has an interesting world that's not too large and empty and not too small either. The story is nice and well done for what it is. It's not very difficult, but some of the dungeons (Namely 7) had me scratching my head a bit. It also has a cast of memorable characters.

For some reason, I don't really like the 3D Zeldas, and the other 2D titles lack the same charm that LA has. I do like LoZ quite a bit though because sometimes it's just fun to explore a large world, even though a lot of it doesn't have much in it.

>> No.1809075

Gotta go with Ocarina of Time, but I've never played through the original completely and barely touched Link's Adventure.

Top three for me are:
1. Link's Awakening
2. Link to the Past
3. Legend of Zelda

My friends have been telling me I need to play the Oracle games for years, now, but I've just never gotten around to it.

For some reason, I always stop playing the Oracle games around the 7th or 8th dungeon. I don't know why, but I suddenly lose interest and never finish them.

Ocarina of Time.

It shocked me as a kid and I've always kept that deep admiration for it.

I liked the oracle games too.

It's gotta be Adventures of Link. Love the ability to jump, the side-scrolling design, has some of the best songs in the franchise (dat temple theme), and the fact that it was one of the few actually challenging Zelda games ever created. I don't really care for any of the 3D or portable Zelda games because they felt inferior to what came on consoles before them. Link to the Past is also great, and improved on everything about the first Zelda game. So yeah, AoL and LttP are the best Zeldas.

>> No.1809140

My top 3 (order of release)

A Link to the Past
Majora's Mask
Wind Waker (not /vr/, but still goes on the list with the other 2)

A Link to the Past has fantastic dungeons and, in my opinion, the best replay value in the entire franchise. Majora's Mask is entirely different from every other Zelda, and I really enjoy it because of its haunting atmosphere over anything else; its atmosphere is my favorite of any game, period. Wind Waker had my favorite art design, the lighthearted attitude that the first game felt like it would have had in the 80s, fantastic exploration, fluid combat, and it never tried too hard to be anything other than a fantastic adventure game.

Seriously, why is the first one so fucking impossible without the soluce ?
I had to look at the soluce for the entrance of the 8th and 9th dungeon (muh spectacle rock) and for killing Gannon, even though I haven't killed him yet and I only know that the silver arrow (required to kill him) is somewhere in the 9th dungeon

Keeping it /vr/ it'd be

>Link to the Past
>Ocarina of Time
>Legend of Zelda

But those are the only /vr/ Zeldas I've completed. If this list was not /vr/ it'd probably look different. I tried to get into Majora's Mask but it seems time limits in games, even ones I can reset at any time, freak me out. Can't explain it.

My top 3, in no particular order, are Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Link's Awakening.

I really feel the series peaked around the SNES, N64 period, and I think it's just been on a constant downward spiral since Wind Waker (I love WW to death, but everything after it, for the most part has been shit).

Link Between Worlds was fucking glorious, though. Which is funny because I had almost no faith in it going in. I really hope that's a signal that they're going back to what made the franchise so great instead of the nonsense that led to Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

There's absolutely nothing Zelda 1 did that hadn't been done years before. It doesn't even have the benefit of polish that kept(and still keeps) the later Zeldas afloat.

The only people who like it are people who were kids in the late 80s. Anybody who was old enough to be playing more complicated games, like say Ultima IV, would have found it trite. Anybody too young to have played it when it was new would have no biased memories, and could judge it for what it really is.

>> No.1811604

>>1811573
You're measuring the game's merit on whether or not it was the first to ever offer an experience like it did. It most certainly was not an entirely original concept or implementation, but it was a very solid one, and made for a very entertaining game. You get a vast open field with many secrets. It's not overly complex, it's fairly simple once you know what you're doing, but it does offer a sense of wonder.

There's certainly merit to it, not for its originality or its contribution to the genre but for its characteristics as a game. And I'm telling you this as someone who first played it in 2011.

"Solid" is code for "unexceptional" and possibly "mediocre". There are hundreds of open world games that you'd be better off playing before Zelda 1. The fact that it still gets put on a pedestal by 30-something NES kids is all the excuse I need to be mean to it.

>"Solid" is code for "unexceptional" and possibly "mediocre".
"Solid" is not code for anything. Yes, it does mean it's "not exceptional", but again, not every single game has to reinvent the wheel. And it doesn't mean mediocre unless the game sets out to reinvent the wheel. Faulting Zelda for not being revolutionary is like faulting Dragon Quest for not having improved and more complex Ultima-style mechanics. None of those games set out to do that, they did their own thing on their own limited media.

I guess your beef is how overrated Zelda is (people even praise it as "inventing save games"), and if that's the case you do have a point. It marks a faux beginning of a genre for the hipster retro crowd that's gotten into gaming only recently. But being overrated doesn't make it mediocre or bad by default.

>> No.1811693

For 2D Zeldas, A Link to the Past, but only by a little(Link's Awakening is my second favorite). It has such a great sense of adventure, and the worlds are so interesting and full of neat stuff, it's one of the reasons I found Ocarina so lackluster, the world felt empty and bland.

As for favorite 3D, it has to be Wind Waker, but my favorite out of the two /vr/ 3D Zeldas has to be Majora's Mask, it's so weird and the world and lore it creates is so interesting, plus it has a ton of amazing mechanics that I wish made it into more Zeldas.
