What was the name of those missions where you followed the bleeding Pagan?
I loved those missions. From the gameplay-cutscene where the Mechanists don't want to go into the graveyard, to the spooky portal, to revisiting the maw, to sneaking through the ape-men's habitat, that mission arc (or chapter if you will) was baller as fuck

Thnx. I took a break to work on some Doom maps and stuff, but I'm getting back into it now. Going straight through the game (except training mission, that'll be last methinks). So after this it's Cragscleft (which nearly none of is done, doesn't reuse many textures from baffords), which ought to be fun on a bun. Lots of gravel, wood, and stone... Getting tired of bricks. It looks good but you should know that TTLG is letting anyone collaborate on a texture pack which aims to be as close to the originals as possible. They're perfectionists when it comes to which texures make it in the pack but if you post WIPs they leave some really constructive criticism on what to fix. There's no point in having multiple textures packs around for the same game.

Ghosting is harder and a fun challenge, i don't consider the blackjack to be cheap necessarily, it just depends on my mood with which way i wanna play.
There are a few levels in thief 1 for sure that are impossible to pure-ghost, like no search modes or nothing. The room in thieves guild where the second in command guy has the bracelet and house key is an example. A guard staring right at the door or loot with no way to get past. Many of the original missions are possible though. Baffords, cragscleft, assassins, the sword, etc.
One neat trick i discovered while trying to ghost thief 1 is that stationary, unalerted spiders are looking out of their butts. That is when theyre just sitting there, turning around occasionally, their vision cone is coming out of their asses, not their eyes. I dont they actually turn around when they appear to. This is why spiders are so hard to sneak past.
I think walking spiders have vision out their front though.

Yeah, I know. They're doing great work too, but mines a bit different. They're doing theirs based on the original sources (mainly), and I'd rather paint mine based solely on the low res images and thief lore, and more painted. Photo-real textures in a low res game look off to me. They used my carpet textures as a base though, actually...

Also when I finish the textures I may remodel the objects/characters/retool the levels. If it comes to that I'd rather it all match style wise...

It'd be cool to fix the animations to stay on-balance and add facial expressions during fights and stuff, but that would take a complete re-tooling of the animation system. Hopefully Newdark guy didn't call it quits.

I really want to enjoy Thief. I watched someone play Gold on youtube and it looked fun, so I tried Thief 2. But I guess I just suck too hard. I'm only on mission 3. I spent hours on mission 1 alone. I couldn't finish mission 2 until I lowered the difficulty off Expert. And then it was too easy and was no longer fun. But on Expert it was just frustrating.

Now I'm on the third mission, the game says I can't even knock anyone out, and there are strange Mechanist faces (I think that's what they're called) paired up with guards and I just can't handle it man. I can't do it!

I have a simple job plan for this evening. Break into /v/, start another Thief thread and leave quietly. Lord Summer is out of town and the rumour has it that the mods went with him, as a bodyguard. So the time is ripe for a decent thread. The front page is always full with non vydia threads, and /vg/ is far to exposed. But Cutty tells me there's a better way in, around to the side, more out of the way. Only regular Taffers, and likely no shitposters to...complicate matters. The piece Cutty wants is a decent thread, good arguments, the usual adornments. It should provide a good discussion. Lord Summer, like most of his kind, probably keeps his best comments on the top floor of the place. Close to his heart, and far from his his console peasant servants. No point in waiting... I have Cutty's old sketches of the place, and every underage who's going to be asleep inside already is. It's time to begin.

considering the way thief models were animated, these animations are actually really good, and very complicated. The way they had to do it is create a tweening effect with the vertexes on each polygon on the model. This is because they hadn't used the method called skeletal animation, which Valve popularized.

The models may be a little quirky and weird, but dammit what they pulled off with the animations is worthy of praise, they're great, expressive, and accurate.

However, I was caught off guard in Life of the Party when I found an apartment and took a mini-elevator to some hidden room with some book and some weird stuff.
I read the book then turned around I saw two zombies just standing there - I freaked out for a few seconds and thought...how am I going to get out of here without them wrecking me.
I just ran for the elevator and booked it, but not before hearing the zombie groans.

I only heard it in Truart's estate.
In Truart's private chapel, I stopped on the metal flooring by the podium and heard the Haunt's alerted sound.

Thief, for me, a rare example of a game where jacking the difficulty to the maximum actually made the game more challenging without making it cheap. More goals really tested my resolve, but I had so much fun doing it I never felt put off. The ones that stand out most in my memory are Ominous Bequest, Broken Triad and Art of Thievery. Rowena's Curse was another good one - these levels are like the "Grand classics" of thief fm's, in my opinion. Most of them are like 3.5 hours long, Art took my 7 hours my first time, and they're just stuffed full of content and exploraton and detail and great story and gameplay, and original and innovative ideas.

A Thief 1 (not even officially or thief gold, though it runs in it) level was released last year called Nigel's Hidden Treasure which was pretty spectacular, it had all these different areas and was like a thematic summary of T1.

Of course there are a lot more than these. I think I've played maybe a hundred thief missions? But there are over a thousand of them. So like, three years of content, playing one level a day.

I enjoyed the Bathory Campaign, also made by Sensut. Not really in the Thief universe, but rather a game of its own, in semi-historical, semi-mystical setting. Which I think is a nice choice for experimentation. I have yet to check his other Dracula Campaign.

As for Thief universe missions, my favorites so far are "Disorientation" for T2 and "Shadow Politics" for TG. Both share emphasis on city style exploration, much like "Being Thief".

For Thief 2, use tafferpatcher.

Yeah roombrushing is tedious and it's worse when you have octogonal towers above streets and shit. Still, roombrushing the mission took me only a night so it's alright by me. I keep adding shit everywhere (rooms, one-way routes and other stuff) but I'm really almost done with geometry, it should be finished in a few hours.

Also you should totally pick up DromEd again, NewDark made it significantly less unstable. It's still pretty rudimentary but it works better now. When I made my first mission I kept hitting these scene complexity errors that would make it crash. Reaching those now is almost impossible unless you really really want it.

>>1848852

Replaying Thief missions and looking back at 1998, one of the coolest thing about the engine was the detailed object placement. Loot could be nestled in cracks, leaning up against a flowerpot, or tucked away between two books. The feeling I get from Thief where hidden stuff is actually hidden, often in a realistic way, is something I really miss in modern games. It's a far cry from glowing highlights, map markers, and popup text. And before anyone says "pfft, that was crap, it was basically 3D pixel hunting" Thief usually only got really sneaky when it was secret or unnecessary stuff, which (surprise) is another thing games barely do anymore.

>> No.1865208

Yeah. Games seem to be less about real exploration now and more about spoonfeeding a story through cutscenes or blatant exposition... Unreal had a lot of unnecessary bits and bobs to find as well that made the world feel more fleshed out. Even if it made less sense, like finding a bunch of rocket ammo in a church urn.

I'm replaying Thief 2 and I just learned that in Blackmail, it opens up a secret if you use a water arrow to clean up the mead that Benny spilled on the rug. I don't usually look up 100% walkthroughs even for games I've finished, so sometimes they keep surprising me.

Does it even matter how fast you're moving or what surface you're walking on as long as you're crouching down? From what I can tell, crouching basically 100% silences your footsteps, and that's really disappointing.

I'm so glad I didn't give up on this game at the Hammerite prison. Nobody told me there were zombies in the game. I thought I was playing Robin Hood Simulator 1998 up until that point and I was so shaken upon encountering them that I couldn't get past the mines for a week. Then I found the fount of holy water and gibbed them all like some kind of undead holocaust. I killed every last one of those fuckers for all the terror they caused me. It was cathartic. By the time I got to bone hoard I was desensitized enough to at least generate a fight-or-flight response instead of quietly shitting in place. I still go into PANIC.jpg whenever I see one though.

I'm now on the fourth level where you return to the manor. It's pretty cozy in comparison, which is a good thing because my nerves need a break. I'm so glad to be hiding from guards instead of zombies that I haven't even killed any of them.
