anime was even darker in the 70s.

Kerokko Demetan and Hutch the honeybee were some of the first anime I saw when I was very little, and god damn, in each episodes a friend or a family member died in horrible ways.

I'm the first guy you replied to, I never implied the west doesn't have dark stuff too, but kerokko demetan was really different from all the other happy-go-lucky cartoons I was used to watch on TV. Movies generally tend to be allowed to have darker themes, but TV series for kids in the west, I don't think would allow the amount of death and slaughter I've seen in Demetan, which was about cute little frogs living in the swamp... getting eaten and tortured by all sort of creatures.

It's funny, Giygas used to be like this fucked up "dark secret" that came at the end of a really light-hearted game, but now it's the other way around; people go into Earthbound expecting it to be some Gieger-esque horror, and are disappointed to find that 99% of the game is Peanuts: The Videogame.

Dragon Ball Z isn't really that violent. Fist of the North Star was made for a similar 12-16 demographic, and it's about a kung fu assassin who goes around punching people so hard they explode, in showers of blood and gore with bones poking through their skin and stuff.

>>1804886
FotNS TV was really censored. There's a lot of blood, but it's whited out when people actually explode, they do a lot of cut-aways and silhouettes. I mean it's obvious what's happening but they actually don't usually show brain matter or bones or anything.

They censored the shit out of this in the USA, which essentially killed any chances it had to make it big in here. That, and shitty dub voices. Oddly enough, they did the same to Sailor Moon and it was kind of a hit.

>> No.1804971

>>1804964

Sailor Moon didn't have that many things to be censored, did it?
Did they censor their transformations which were semi nude?

>> No.1804991

>>1804971

Yes they did. They airbrushed the breast and pubic area outlines.

And that's not only it. Scenes were altered, characterizations were changed for Lord knows why, lots of unnecessary 90's CG scene transitions, replacing the neat OST for generic synth stuff where every other song is an instrumental version of the opening (they even had some original songs which actually fit the scenes), violence and suggestive themes were toned down, et cetera.

Thankfully they're re-releasing the series on Blu-Ray with an all new dub and a better script.

>> No.1804997

>>1804991

damn, why would you want to change the soundtrack...
same with DBZ, I don't understand why they needed to replace the background music in the US, it kills a big part of the series atmosphere and feel.

That seemed to be a recurring theme in old English dubs. Gatchaman in its first English dubs had every song replaced. The worst dub being G-Force as you kept hearing the same notes from the intro song being slowed down

>> No.1805013

>>1804997

I guess they thought it was too "jazzy" for kids to get it. The third and fourth seasons' dubs keep the original OST, thankfully. We never got the final season because TRAPS and nude Sailor Moon in the finale.

Oh, and the biggest offender is: nobody dies! The season one finale gets utterly ruined by this.
Yes, this also happens in Saint Seiya. All that blood is "energy stream" or something like that. Let that sink in for a moment.

>> No.1805017

>>1805009

It's weird. For violence and such, I can understand, but going through the hassle of changing the music... unless there's some sort of copyright thing going on and they found cheaper to produce a new soundtrack, but I'd believe if you acquire the rights to a show, you can air it with the music included... doesn't make sense.

>> No.1805035

>>1805017
No, it's because there was often only one audio track finally recorded, and that's the music and dialogue together. People being too laving to transplant the soundtrack and sync it up to the show or make their own music is why some anime like Gunbuster were never given dubs.

Music often got changed with US anime dubs simply because it was something cheap the producers could do to get even more money with royalties for foreign dubs based off -that- foreign dub. DBZ was the same way.

DiC did a lot of things, but they hardly 4Kids'd sailor moon. (Pic related, this scene was left in in it's entirety)
They cut episodes from Jedite's chapter and a few others so that each of the Dark Kingdom's minions got an even 10 episodes. This spread the content evenly over a weekly basis. For a kid trying to catch that one episode they missed or waiting for their favorite part of the series to start, knowing exactly what day of the week it would happen was a huge benefit.

The problem with this was once they hit enough episodes to be syndicated, they stopped. Dic ended their run of sailor moon right after Rubius' 4 girls turned good. Not because the Rest of that season was too explicit, but because they didn't need any more episodes. It was just how things were.

I repeat. DiC stopped dubbing sailor moon long before Uranus and Neptune showed up. That was all Cloverway. Those guys were awful.

Say, how acceptable it is to admit you watched stuff like Sailor Moon? Back when I was a kid and it was airing, the boys dissed the idea of watching it and I followed suit, but watched a few episodes here and there and liked the idea of common girls who fight evil and go through their daily lives in the meantime.

Fuck, now that I think about it, I can't imagine how producing TV shows with massive libraries of episodes must be before we had Digital editing.
I'm not surprised they didn't have separate soundtracks, to make editing easier. Most anime barely had the budget to finish their initial production.
Hell gunbuster didn't even get finished. Key scenes in the last episode are storyboard stills.

Yeah, I always thought this was a guilty pleasure of most boys who grew in the late 90's. I especially thought it was a girls-only show after seeing my mom's friends' daughters watching a plot-important episode during a baby shower, cheering and sighing, while I watched from afar and thought "hey, shit gets real in Sailor Moon, gotta check it out sometime." Year later and admitting I like it sounded like coming out of the closet for me.

Nobody wanted to accept it, but we all loved Sailor Moon.
I remember when SM first aired, I was watching Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya, you know, anime for boys, and when I saw the first episode of SM I thought it was silly and obviously for girls only, I remember making fun of Usagi (or Serena, as was her name on the spanish dub) for being a dumb girl while my female cousins watched it.
Then... I don't know, I got hooked. I think in part is due to being attracted to the girls, I remember when my best friend and I confessed to each other that we liked Sailor Moon, at first we were like "yeah nah I only watch SM because it's so stupid I only watch it to laugh at it...", then we ended up discussing the show and who best girl was (Ami), and then I found out he used to tape record the episodes, hehe.
Soon enough I got the beat em up vidya for Sega Genesis and we played it co-op all the time.
Same thing in school, every kid watched it, but only the girls talked about it. One day I said "fuck it" and started discussing the show with them too. Then the rest of the boys also started admitting watching it and discussing.
