Can we get a Spyro thread going? Year of the Dragon was my first video game I've ever played, and I still love it to this day. I have 117%, all gems, eggs, skill points, everything. I'd really enjoy it if we got a Spyro thread.

Fucking yea Spyro
I've beaten Spyro 3 more times than I can count.
Spyro 1 for me is just the atmosphere, second half of the game is the tits, and the most sweet music in any game.
Spyro 2 is fun for the double jump glitch, getting you where you shouldn't be.

Well, by reaching the final boss and beating her, the game is at 100%. But if you go around and collect all 20,000 gems and 150 eggs and get the skill points, you'll then have 117%. I see what they mean by it, but it's still confusing.

I play it with my son. The actual gameplay is fairly fun, and the difficulty can be adjusted to be a decent enough challenge, but it's clearly a naked cash grab, locking shit away if you don't have a certain skylander of a specific element - two, now, in the latest iteration.

But hey, kids like what kids like. Tomorrow we're playing Mario Kart, so I'm trying to steer him towards age-appropriate games that aren't completely shit.

Out of all the non Insomniac entries, it's probably one of the better ones. Wasn't horribly bugged/rushed like Enter the Dragonfly, and there was some actual attempt to capture at least some small bit of the humor and charm of the original three.

Do it. The PS1 trilogy is great, although there is a bit of change from the first to the next two (first is pretty much straight platforming and collecting without a lot of interaction, while 2 and 3 introduce other characters/species to help out, as they don't take place in the same land as the first, which I've seen turn some people off, but others really like; the gameplay also gets a bit more refined with different things you can do as well). Give them a try starting with the first. Chances are you'll enjoy it (also helps that, like the PS1 Crash games as well, they look pretty good visually for 3D PS1 games).

I love Insomniac's Spyro games. Bought Ripto's Rage on my PSP, plan to buy YOTD sometime soon.

I think one of my favorite facts about the games is that Spyro 3 was basically the testbed for the difficulty scaler in the Ratchet & Clank games, and that with a couple cheat codes you could totally fuck with it, making the game balls-hard or easy as Sunday morning. Spyro was one of the first games I ever played, and I replayed the first one recently on emulator (but computer trouble fucked all my progress, thus convincing me to never play emulated anything ever again) and it's honestly so much better than I remember. They truly are masterful works. I wouldn't entirely let that make me feel emulation was bad, since it sounds like perhaps you need to backup your saves or something. Plus emulation tends to be the only way to really play certain games, like those that have had fan translations or are just way too expensive, especially if you're not sure you'll entirely like them (and this is coming from someone who does prefer physical copies myself when viable). On that note, the PS1 games occasionally go on sale on the PSN if you have a PS3 or PSP; a few months back Spyro 1-3, along with some other PS1 games as well (Crash 1-3, CTR, etc) were all on sale for $1 each if you're not averse to digital copies.

As for Spyro itself, prices haven't been too bad where I live: I think the first goes for about $12 out here, the second for $18 or so, and third for $16. Biggest issue was just trying to find them, and in decent condition. Found a complete copy of the Collectors bundle with everything included and in great shape (only thing that had much wear was the protective sleeve), and considering how much I loved those games growing up I bought that right up. It's good to have them back.

And yeah, I think the color usage for all three games tends to make them all look great. Insomniac really did well at that, among other things. Personally prefer Evening Lake to Sunrise Spring though, as far as homeworlds in the third game go.

What actually happened was that my macbook pro's hard drive corrupted (for a second time, wow do I regret giving apple a chance) and it just gave me the willies because with emulation somehow my saves always seem to get fucked. I just feel more comfortable on original hardware and a CRT y'know? However I do use emulation to try b4 buy and it's good to pass free time at school or something. I have an incredible ps1 emulator on my phone, and the godtier OpenEmu on my macbook.

I literally just got a PSP and PS3 like 2 weeks ago so I'll definitely keep a lookout in the PS store for good deals like that. Usually I just prefer to have the original physical copies but if it's a deal that good, I can't pass something like that up.

That's awesome though, that trilogy goes for like 80 bucks usually. Not bad at all. I'm trying to find all 3 of the original black label copies in decent condition and decent price, it'll be worth the penny pinching once I get em.

Yeah the games all pay an incredible attention to color theory and detail, it goes a long way for them to really make the games beautiful. I don't think there's a single homeworld where I wasn't like "wow this is beautiful". Even as a child when they all first came out.

I've mostly just stuck to my PSP for emulating since my computer is pretty much 2006 toaster-tier that I'm still using since it works well enough for just internet stuff, apart from a few instances of it crapping out here and there.

With the PS3 and PSP, what you want to look out for are flash sales, since they usually have a lot of decent games, both old and current, for about $1 or so over the course of a weekend. Some other recent sales included Syphon Filter 1-3, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Dino Crisis 1 and 2, etc.

Where do you live that the games are $80 to pick up physical copies of? I mean, maybe things have changed since I bought my collector's bundle, but I still see the games pretty cheap locally, and the majority of stores out here like to try to fleece your wallet when possible.

>Also, what the fuck is the deal with the new Spyro design
I swear, Activision shoehorned him into Skylanders due to fear that a completely new IP with nothing recognizable wouldn't sell, only to give him an obligatory redesign of the sake of giving him a redesign that only serves to piss off people that might have bought it because Spyro was there.

Ah, I've got a windows build that I'm usually using that can handle pretty much anything I throw at it. Even still, emulation (I blame the emulators I guess) still just feels wonky sometimes. It's hard to keep a constant 60 fps for the games that run it at full 100% with decent graphics..

Nice, thanks for the protip. So far I've only bought Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, it's an okay remake but I'm a tad disappointed. I'd rather just play it on Super Nintendo.

I live in Detroit Michigan. Retro is super hard to come by. A Disc Replay just opened up about 2 cities over and it has a pretty decent selection with pretty fair prices. Didn't even see Spyro in there though. I usually have to just settle for ebay, even with the new Disc Replay it's still a bit of a drive to get there and back, plus it's a gamble on if they'll have what I want or not. Any yard/garage/estate sales I've been to never even have video games at all.

That sounds disgusting. I don't even know what Skylanders is but that alone steers me away from it... I thought that new model of Spyro was from a new Spyro game. Almost glad it isn't, but still. There's no way he can be revived after that mess.

Emulation can have issues from time to time, especially for particular systems or games. Still, if you just got that PSP, you might want to soft mod it if you want to use it for portable PS1 emulation. It makes a nice little system for that, and can also handle emulation of some other systems as well.

We don't have Disc Replays out here I live, but I recall hearing some decent things about them in the past. As for not finding Spyro, yeah. The games are by no means rare (looking at how many copies sold, and the fact that all three not only got Greatest Hits versions, but also a Collector's Bundle and PSN ports, which increases availability for playing it in general), but demand still tends to be fairly high for them and keeps them a bit hard to find, I suppose. It is a bit of luck whether a store out here has them or not, but they're still pretty reasonably priced when they do.

As for Skylanders, it was some new Activision IP based around having to get figures with real money, that when placed on some device downloads access to that character and story pertaining to them in the game itself. It's gotten really damn popular, which I find kind of sad, considering how much you'd have to pay if you wanted every character and all the story the game offered; I know my parents would never have been willing to shell out that much when just the base game itself is a good $60 or more. Hell, it was hard enough just getting them to pick up the occasional game for $30 used back when I was a kid.

Whether it's actually a good series or not, I refuse to forgive it and Activision for what they did to Spyro. At least Crash seems to have been finally granted his much deserved slumber after a number of fairly unenjoyable games made by people that apparently can't capture the enjoyment or charm the original ones had (and still trying to give some of the characters a bad redesign; especially the masks); meanwhile Spyro seems to keep having his corpse dug up.

Yeah I softmodded my PSP to play downloaded PSP games so I might as well go the extra mile and enable some emulation on there as well. What's done about the PS1 games that require the dualshock, as well as R2 and L2?

Yeah my friend in Chicago said it's pretty cool, and now that I have one relatively close to me it's a nice alternative to ebay. Granted, ebay isn't always terrible.

Wait so it's like those new toys Nintendo is trying to put out? And you have to buy new ones to unlock different stories? lol bye. Yeah, just off principle (even if the premise of the game sounded better) I wouldn't partake in that simply because they're just raping Spyro. Just leave him to rest in piece already.

>> No.1807371

I've heard rumor that for some of the ones that require L2 and R2 there's some remapping or something that can be done to keep the functionality still there, but to be honest I'm not all that sure (most PS1 games I've put on mine were either remapped already in the process of having had PSX2PSP eboots made, or never had that functionality to begin with). Something I'd need more experience with to talk about further.

The worst thing about Activision and Skylanders is that it set a precedent that that sort of thing is perfectly acceptable to do, leading to stuff like Disney Infinity as well, where you can go out and buy more figure to unlock more characters for the game. I think with the Amiibo, they're mainly be used for some added functionality without locking you out of characters and such (at least as far as Smash bros is concerned; to be fair I haven't been paying much attention to what all they're planning to do with those).

One saw a bag of used Skylanders figures being sold for eighty fucking bucks, and that was at the store with the cheapest prices for anything video game related in town.

There's button combinations, but only for the four shoulder buttons (L1+R1 and L2+R2). You can't mix the combinations, either. You can map either combination to any button, though.

On a personal note, I find for Megaman Legends 2--which plays pretty well on the latest PSP CFWs, especially 6.60 PRO-C--it's easiest to map the movement buttons to the analog nub, and map L1 and R1 to the left and right keys on the D-Pad, while keeping up and down on the D-pad mapped to up and down movement for menu compatibility. It's the most comfortable control scheme I've come up with so far.

Spyro is one of those cases where the Greatest Hits versions fixed a few things from time to time, namely some of the music that wound up unimplemented in the original releases due to either bugs or time constraints. Still, the original black label versions suffice well as I recall, and I don't personally remember any actual game breaking bugs in my copies growing up or anything.

And I agree about the way Greatest Hits games look, especially in certain cases like that awful green of the PS1 ones (or the solid, bold red of PS3 cases compared to the clear original label ones; not retro but an example of how annoying it is, as that doesn't go too well with much at all).

Indeed, the gams have some of my favorite ones. It helps that not only do you not need to worry about breathing upon learning how to dive in the second game, but that movement in the water feels pretty damn good. Also the fact that he retains that (along with ladder climbing and head bashing) in the third game as well without having to relearn it again.

Yeah greatest hits anything looks like shit. It 100% of the time shits on the artwork for any game. Unfortunately I've been fairly busy lately, between moving, unpacking, and cleaning.

On that note, where exactly do you live? Because I've heard the black label versions of at least some of the PS1 Spyro games saw the music fixed before it came over there, while the US had to wait for the Greatest Hits rereleases.

I wouldn't say that happens all the time, but it happens often enough. I think the only Greatest Hits style rendition I actually like is what Nintendo did with the Wii and the Nintendo Selects titles, where it as least has something of a classier vibe to it and on the whole doesn't look too terrible, though I'm still not inclined to buy ones like that. Better than stuff like the green spined PS1 version, or some of the PS3 stylings they've done, which have gone completely overboard (last I heard, Sony's done two or three regular labels, along with silvery Platinum Hits, solid red Greatest Hits, and yellow PS3 the BEST if you're the sort to make use of the lack of region lock on the PS3 and import).

Still, I don't think much compares to how stupid the "Konami's Best" Greatest Hits rendition of Dawn of Sorrow, with its stupid cover-within-a-cover. I suppose this is getting a bit off topic though, so I'll stop here.

The original release of Spyro 3 has a major game-breaking bug in Honey Speedway. If you exit the level before getting all three eggs, you'll never be able to get them. You can complete the challenges but you won't get the eggs for them. This makes 100% completion impossible and so you'll never be able to reach Super Bonus Round. This was fixed in the Greatest Hits & Platinum versions.

The original version has another game-breaking bug in Fireworks Factory. If you play the level with the Automatic Difficulty Tuning set to Easy, either through a cheat or because you're not going that well, two gems will be on top of an unreachable tower. This was fixed in the Greatest Hits version but I don't think it was fixed in the Platinum version.

There's a third game-breaking glitch in Spooky Swamp. If you kill a flying enemy for the first time over the water when you don't have Sparx, the gem will fall under the water where you'll never be able to reach it. The Greatest Hits version DOESN'T fix that glitch though and neither does the Platinum version.

In the original release of Spyro 2, there was a glitch that let you double-jump that could be used for serious sequence-breaking but could also break the game if you double-jumped into the skybox.

Get the Greatest Hits versions. Also, if you can find a PAL version of the original game and can play that, it has an extra music track that the NTSC version doesn't have.

I live in Detroit Michigan (USA). I was considering getting black label cases with greatest hits discs (there actually were some on ebay mixed up like that) to avoid the bugs, but then someone JUST put up a buy it now/obo with all three, black label cib for 50 dollars. I offered 45 and he bit it, 7 people were already watching it so I had to pounce asap. Spyro 3's jewel case is cracked on the front but I'll just replace it with a new one so I don't really care. I think that's much better than the original 60 I was going to pay getting them all separate. I'm glad I'll get them all at the same time now too.
I guess I'll just have to take not of those bugs and try not to trigger them as well as deal without the omitted tracks. The latter of which is more of a shame/loss but I'm satisfied though.

Yes, you can fix the Fireworks Factory glitch with a cheat. No, you can't fix the Spooky Swamp glitch by leaving and re-entering. That gem will be lost forever. Basically, don't ever fly over the water in Spooky Swamp unless you have Sparx.

>>1812331
Here's how it works, from the horse's mouth: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3030/keeping_the_pirates_at_bay.php Basically, it used multiple cross-checking checksums hidden throughout the game's code without any reference tables.

How it works in practice is quite funny and involves many layers. At first, the game displays that anti-piracy message and removes random gems and eggs from the game, making 100% impossible. If you progress further, other things start happening: portals stop working, the pause button stops working, and if you're playing the PAL version it will randomly change languages. Callbacks in the code would also corrupt and cause crashes. Finally, if you somehow make it to the final boss, attacking her sent you back to the first homeworld, erased all your progress, and saved your game.

The idea was to waste crackers' time by having them think that they cracked everything only to find new problems. In the end a group called Paradox found a way to bypass the checksums completely but it took them a few months, which was Insomniac's goal in the first place: they knew that preventing piracy forever was impossible but they also knew that nearly all a game's sales are within the first month or two. They aimed to delay piracy by a few months and succeeded.

I'm an N64 kiddie but I respect that the Spyro developers understood the system's limitations by trying to make the low-poly look really stylized rather than trying to force something more realistic that would run slower.

Tooie was ambitious as hell and a fairly reasonable technical achievement, but boy did it slow down a lot. Rare were trying to force PC-esque graphics from an old console that simply couldn't do it. It's like asking a middle aged runner to try to sprint against a young athlete.

They only look so good because you're looking from a distance. Close up they look still good by N64 standards though.

Rare were one of the few developers that really knew how to texture properly on the N64. If you've got Banjo Kazooie there, go to the Treasure Trove Cove part of Gruntilda's Lair, and jump up onto the canon that shoots out a jiggy at one point in the game. Then use C-up to enter first person perspective and look at the scenic wall painting texture. It looks unbelievably fucking good. It's almost looks bump-mapped, it's that good.

Kazooie had a good 30fps framerate, but Tooie took things waaaaay too far and got tons of dips. Props to Insomniac for keeping Spyro at 30fps in all games.

I agree. Draw distance is very problematic on PSX. Affine mapping means that large textured polygons can suffer from extreme perspective errors. There's a few ways around it, but it's not straight forward. By contrast, N64 does everything perspective correct so drawing far away isn't a problem in itself, just polygon counts really as the norm.

All three are excellent games that hold up really well (solid gameplay, graphics that still manage to look pretty damn good for a 3D PS1 game, excellent music, etc), and are ones you really ought to play if you have access to playing PS1 games and enjoy platformers or collectathon type games. That said, it would probably be a good idea to play them in order. While the plot for each game tends to be self contained, there are nods to previous games here and there, as well as some cameo appearance of characters from the second game in the third. The gameplay and voicing quality also improves a fair bit between the first and second games (though it's not as if the first has bad voicing, probably more of an issue with Insomniac not being sure how much to spend on voicing since they weren't entirely sure how well the game would sell).

To be fair, if you wanted to just start up the first game, it's not likely to be a pain to replay over again with an actual copy when it arrives, even if you choose to go for 100%. That's not to say the second and third aren't fun to replay as well, but some of the challenges like escorting the alchemist, or saving the cavemen aren't ones you're likely to be keen to beat again in a short span of time.

Most of the challenges in 2 and 3 are pretty reasonable, but there's a few Insomniac tossed in to really test the player (not only one's skills, but also at times one's patience with certain NPCs).

Ah yeah I know, it's just that I've played Spyro 1 up to the 4th or 5th world 3 time already on emulators and something fucked up my save each time. So the next time I play I'd just rather it be THE time. I have a ton of other games I'm trying to get through before school starts. I'll be focusing on coding and designing a layout for a 300 page book this semester so I won't have much time (or money, good god) for /vr/ or anything really come September.

Well, good luck with that. Working with InDesign or some other layout program can be fun when you get the hang of it, but for something that big, I hope you don't have to write all the actual content yourself (since that sounds like it would take forever given that many pages), and can create templates for the actual page styles.

>> No.1813976

>>1813905
Yeah I'll be using InDesign as well as a few other Adobe programs (the main ones I use are in my dock in the screenshot of my desktop I posted earlier in the thread) for other classes too. I'm pretty sure they give me the content haha. But still, it has to be pretty varied and it's extremely time consuming. Not to mention I have to actually get a physical book made at the end of the semester. I'm sure I'll be able to get away with a few templates, but I'm pretty sure the design has to relate to the content specific to each spread in some way. I don't know all the details yet but I know it's one of the harder parts of the beginning of a Graphic Design degree at my school. However, I'm looking forward to learning coding as that's something I feel like I'll enjoy doing.

Anyway, I think if I can find one of those memory card adapter things for at max 30 bucks (In America too, I already have too much shit I'm waiting for from Japan) I'll probably just pick it up. I know that's something I'll get a ton of use out of, especially if I can back up saves to my PC. Doesn't really matter if it doesn't work on my mac, my PC is my main home base anyway. I just wanna be able to take emulator saves and put them on my PS1 memory card to play on the actual hardware and I think that's what that does.

I didn't mind Dino Mines much myself, but stuff like Agent Nine having a challenge in there brought it down a good bit for me; think the only level involving him that I didn't terribly mind was his own level in Midnight Mountain. Oh well, at least Insomniac got some of their clunky, early third/first person shooter attempts out of the way with a minor character during Spyro 3, rather than the entirety of Ratchet and Clank 1 feeling that way.

>>1813976
Coding can take some getting used to (depends on what you're coding for), but yeah, if it's something you can wrap your brain around, it can be pretty fun. Also the fact that depending on what you're doing with it, there's generally some free programs you can use for it, as well as being able to, say, switch between something like Dreamweaver and Textwrangler (or another text program) if doing HTML or CSS. As long as you can save as the right sort of file type, it seems to work pretty well (and while programs like Dreamweaver are extremely helpful for teaching you what all you can do, learning how to hand code is useful as well, both for times when you may not have access to your preferred program, or for easy editing or debugging).

Yeah I know it'll be a pain to start off but I have confidence I won't have too much trouble with it. I have a very basic understanding of HTML and a small bit of CSS now so I think that'll at least give me like a 2% boost haha. Yeah I'm sure we'll be starting off with Dreamweaver and such but I believe the goal is to teach us how to be comfortable hand coding so we don't need to rely as heavily on those types of tools. My school has a really great GD program so I think as long as I apply myself (which I always do) I'll learn a ton.

Found one of those Sony brand memory card adapters on ebay for 34 shipped, picked that up. I think it'll be a good investment so I don't have to wait for my PS games in the mail anymore to start making progress. I buy the most for PS and Saturn so I invest in accessories like this a lot and it pays off.

Moneybags takes your gems all throughout Spyro 2 and 3. In Spyro 3 though he's also planning to sell a Dragon Egg at the end of the game, which is the final straw for Spyro there, thus the chase for it, which you get at the end. Getting back your gems by torching him repeatedly with a nice sense of cathartic vengeance is just a really nice added bonus. Especially since in the second game, Hunter's the one that wallops him into giving your gems back.

By the way, this thread is missing some links. These are the COMPLETE skybox/level pics. The skyboxes one is pointless because the seperate game folders already have them in, but I didn't see these all posted here.

Even as a kid I assumed Spyro 2 was rushed. It was impossible to overlook that they only had 3 of the 4 seasons. Add to the fact that Autumn Plains was so big compare to the other two worlds, plus it had two speedways instead of one, I always thought that "Spring Jungles" or whatever hypothetical world was cut and merged with Autumn Plains. Going to give this article a read over later, cool find.

You can probably find a list online, but in general they seem to be for accomplishing a certain task (like bating Crush or Gulp in the second game while taking no damage), or reaching some out of the way place just because you can. Keep in mind that they were mostly targeted at children, which is why the collect-a-thon elements were added, as well as the mini games in the two latter titles, which we can all agree can be challenging and always take a few times. Each title gets relatively more challenging than the last and I think it's a good progression. They're nice and relaxing to just breeze through. I just got to Beast Makers about 5 minutes ago and I just got them (I re-bought them to be exact >>1823486) Thursday. Going for the 120%.

I don't know. Maybe it was just me growing up that had problems with him, or maybe my controller was a bit iffy (that blue beam was a nightmare to try to avoid back then when he did get one, as I recall). But finally beating him felt SO good.

What the hell? I guess that does explain why he disappears from the arena after phase two ends. Still, I've never seen that happen when I've played (or perhaps wasn't paying enough attention, I suppose); does that require him to be in just the right spot to be visible when hit to see that whole thing, or some sort of "break the camera during cutscenes" glitch/cheat, or something?

Fuck, this era had games with such a strong personality, it's odd that the devs today rarely reach that level with advanced graphics and orchestras at their disposal.

I must say I did really like that final gauntlet of locations, having to work your way from the beach, to the volcano, the mines, and the actual laboratory. Still, while the game was pretty enjoyable for a non-Insomniac title (and playable as well, compared to Enter the Dragonfly before it) and at least tried to have some of the humor the earlier games had, I don't think there was nearly as much charm to it.

As far as difficulty I'd say Gloomy Glacier was one of the hardest, between Hunter only having had one playable sub-region earlier in the game and the player likely underestimating just how useful explosive arrows can be in there (and thus likely having failed to stock up on them beforehand).

>> No.1832604

>>1832585
I don't mind picking stuff up, but the fact that you could carry a maximum of twenty explosive arrows (most of which come in extremely handy for Gloomy Glacier) and that there's only two of them in that one Dragonfly Falls subregion means a lot of "get both, have Hunter kill himself so items respawn, repeat" until you max out. But damn is it worth doing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm rather fond of Gloomy Glacier. It was the prep work on subsequent playthroughs that annoyed me.

I rented it once in 2004 when it came out, I was 16. I liked it so much that I went to the mall and bought it. Played for a day, forgot to put it in the case, forgot about it, and it was gone for good. The game just popped into my mind again a few days ago, so I bought it off eBay for $8. Played through it, tried to play it again like I do with most games, but just couldn't. It feels like the charm of this game is lost after playing through it once/for the first time in many years. Because you know everything that's gonna happen.
