Trying to play pick related on my laptop (i5 2.3 GHz) and Dos Box is stuttery as all hell. Is there any way to get this to run smooth?

>> No.1795708

Try the GoG version. It runs fine on Win 7. Sure, they're selling you a custom DOSBox version, but you could waste a few more hours doing it yourself or pay $6.

That's what I have. Got it during the summer sales.

Use google.

Have you tried increasing the cpu-cycles (ctrl+f12 in the game) or editing the conf file to a fixed value?

I attempted a few searches but came up with nothing until I just tried again.

>Try changing the "prebuffer=20" value under the [mixer] section in the config file (dosboxnomouth.conf) to a higher number. I changed mine from 20 to 100 and the stuttering went away, at least so far. I haven't gotten very far in the game yet and I may have to adjust it again later.
This worked for future reference in case anyone else ends up having a similar problem. This would probably work on audio stuttering in other dos box game too.

Try running it through ScummVM

>> No.1795754

>>1795702
Try ScummVM or use a different DOS box for example I use Dosbox SVN-daum which is a custom adjusted one and it helped run 90% of dosbox games straight off the bat in comparison to taking a very long time to run it on a nromal DOSbox.

>> No.1795794

Thriding ScummVM, only way I've got it working right.

Try out ykhwong Dosbox fork. Has better autocycle accuracy. Had the same problems with games from gog on the default Dosbox, tried Dungeon Keeper Gold on ykhwong with auto cycles on and voila. Works like a charm. Since gog games automatically come with Dosbox, you can just delete it's folder in the directory you installed the game in, and copy ykhwong into there with no further alterations. Should open with the shortcut with all the benefits of the new Dosbox build.

>> No.1795813

If you don't use SCUMM to play these kind of games you're dumb. They work great on Android and Wii even.

how do you get games on a virtual machine? i tried before, but i couldn't download anything because they needed drivers and shit i couldn't find, and i couldn't copy files directly to it either.

Got the Steam version (Oh no what will I do) and the developers like to do little updates whenever someone complains. It's really neat. They have options to switch between DOSBox or some DOSBox frontend they package it with, plus they could care less what you do with the data files themselves.

>> No.1800470

It runs on ScummVM. There is no need for DOSbox.

>> No.1800485

I didn't know this game or short story existed before finding this thread.

After reading up on it, I feel pretty disturbed.

How much could they care less?

>> No.1800561

>>1800547
Well piracy is bad obviously but what I meant was "If you don't want to use our bundled DOSBox games and use ScummVM or something that's perfectly fine by us."

Though I could package the game up if you wish.

It was just a small joke because "could care less" is a misnomer. But your serious reply makes me feel uncomfortable. Sorry, I guess.

Apparently they switched from DOSBox to ScummVM a while ago. Hmn. My bad.

what the fuck is wrong with you? it's the best company offering optimised old games for new computers right now. and you're saying that, on /vr/. i shake my head at you.

>> No.1807095

>>1795820
SCUMM shouldn't need drivers if you get the current version. You might need the VB runtime and/or .Net Framework on Windows but you should have those anyway.

>> No.1808425

>>1795713
Why aren't you supporting GoG? Not only are they optimizing the games for modern PCs but you don't have to pay a fuckton of money for previously "rare" games anymore.

>> No.1809162

>Not only are they optimizing the games for modern PCs
That's exactly what they don't do.

If you're lucky they pick out a community patch to slap in. Otherwise they just sell dosbox with unsupported games, literally. That's what they do. If I looked around on forums for a DOS game patch and slapped it in dosbox, preconfigured it and then threw in random manual PDF/art/OSTs I could find then zipped it up. That's what GOG is giving you. They aren't optimizing shit, they aren't unbreaking game for modern systems, they still sell games that don't work well on modern machines or that require community patches they didn't initially include or have available.

They are literally digital repackagers. That's all they are.
