Do people actually play this game? Why? Just get Quake 3. Quake 3 is a much better game.

I won my copy from Gamespy and it was delivered to me on Valentine's Day in my senior year of high school. I was also taken to the admin's office that same day because a friend of mine posted things online that made it sound like a group of my friends wanted to blow up the school library.

Needless to say everything worked out, I still have my copy of UT and I'm sure that kid is a registered sex offender at this point.

Quake 3 and UT are both fun and distinct games but UT is more fun in a team environment because of its weapon variety.

Unreal Tournament is fun the moment you pick it up.
Quake 3 Arena is fun after 24 hours of relentless practicing.
Both are rewarding experiences with tight engines, fun multiplayer, and an active modding scene. Well not so much Quake 3 on that last part, Quake Live pretty much destroyed that.

I agree, I actually thought it was really fun. Not sure why exactly the game got so much flak.

>> No.1787476

Different strokes for different folks.

Quake 3 had an emphasis on speed an precision.

UT had an emphasis on using the right guns in the right areas.

Both are arena shooters.
Both have map metagames of timing and grabbing powerups.
Both are great games. There is no reason to squabble.

Arguably, one could say that the entire linux/open source FPS scene is the quake 3 modding scene.
Srsly, goddamn near every linux fps is a derivative of either ioquake3 or the shitty cube2 engine...

didn't say it didn't have any modding scene, just that it has died a lot. i mean a lot. unreal tournament is still running strong, quake live killed off quake 3's modding scene very effectively what with more than half of the dwindling playerbase leaving to play that instead since it had more players, and the fact that quake live doesn't have any support for custom maps unless approved by bethesda..

>Quake live killed off Quake 3's modding scene very effectively

No, CS killed off Quake 3's modding scene. It never got off the ground really. Mods often went unplayed and for all it's improved moddability, there weren't many fully fledged ones. Even well known mods like Weapons Factory were pretty much DOA with no one playing it.

That was ages before QL.

About the only mods that did get attention were really CPMA/OSP/RA/Freezetag/Excessive, small gameplay variants and tournament control. Also Defrag.

The only other 'mod' that might be considered to have been played actually shifted off into it's own self contained sourceport was Urban Terror.

I have both and honestly prefer UT (vanilla wise), although Quake 3 holds a special place in my heart as it was the first game I ever had a full on addiction to and was the game that got me into gaming in general.

Quake 3 does still have a semi-active modding and mapping community though. I am not aware of UT being active at all in terms of modding and mapping.

Quake 3 as a multiplayer game has been dead since 2008 though. I missed UT completely, so I don't know when it dead.

Because you have to pay once a month for maps you can already play freely in Quake 3.

The physics and weapon damage are both different as well, they feel toned down compared to vanilla Quake 3.

>> No.1789979

>>1789917
I have to admit I had a pretty good time wall dodging over people to dump flack shards in their faces. Dodge jumping was also completely necessary considering the size of some of the maps (especially user created), player cap, and vehicle spawns on retail maps.

>>1789957
>Because you have to pay once a month for maps you can already play freely in Quake 3.
That's pretty lame. I tried QL when it was first released to the public, thought the damage was wonky and went back to Quake II and UT.

Also, less custom shit. Can't start own servers. Light rendering is slightly a mess. No proper server browser at least not externally. Netcode is worse. Weapon balance is worse. It does have smoother mouse input which is good, which really doesn't overshadow the largest problems, the broken multiplayer in a multiplayer only game and the shit game balance. The game balance would be less of an issue, not good but doable if the netcode wasn't garbage. The funny thing is instaunlagged for Q3 already does what QL wanted to do, but it actually works properly. QL is up with shots hitting that don't actually hit, beeps with no damage. Lightning guns misses very sporadically even on non moving targets. It also has the CoD effect where what you're actually seeing is often not what's happening in game by quite a bit.

I've always been super upset about how nobody seems to like Assault. Loved UT99 and UT2k4 assault modes. Fucking UT3 didn't include it.

>> No.1790392

>>1790372
Could care less, larger player space modes like assault typically die out quicker anyway. Players for anything but the top 3-5 games on steam is going to suffer from a severe lack of players. Everyone is DOTA/CS/TF2 garbage. Even some of those that supposedly clock ~10K or more players can have a dearth of players when divided by servers, ping, customizations, modes , and fake listings to the point where it can be fairly barren of people to play.

I played UT so much that I cracked the disc from the edge to the center.

Despite this crack.. it still worked, so I continued to use it even more.

Then one day I put the disc in and the cd rom started to spin absurdly fast. Suddenly POP! Smoke started coming from it, and it completely stopped working. I had to take it out and manually open it up to get my disc out. To my amazement the disc literally exploded into hundreds of little shards, and it broke my CD ROM.

I played UT so much that I exploded it.

For a game of such chaos, it has such a calm theme.. and it's one of the greatest.
