Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

sorry, made the thread yesterday and had to leave

So far I've given up on 2 games on NES, Cosmo Police Galivan and Dragon Spirit - The New Legend, mostly because I'm impatient for the first and no good at shmups for the second. I'm now on level 7-1 of Batman Return of the Joker, it has some very precise platforming on this level which is why I've been stuck on it for half an hour and I love it.

>> No.1785753

also, why no Master System in the list? It's on the gauntlet and has some great games of its own

Well, I got the JP rom, but it seems like it's been patched with a translation, or perhaps it has a translation all along? I'm not sure. In any case, already getting bad vibes. I may re-roll and shame my family just because I don't like RPGs too much.

This is basically an on-rails shooter, and a dumb one at that.
god damn it.

>> No.1786175

So I noticed, after refreshing multiple times, that the random game selection gives out really crappy games.
I know it's supposed to be from the entire catalog, but that's not very fun.
There are plenty of good NES games that are also very difficult.

>> No.1786183

>>1786175
The secondary purpose of the gauntlet is to expose you to games that you otherwise wouldn't play. Give them a try, you might find something new you'd like.

>> No.1786208

>>1786175
I remember there being discussion about that a while back, although i don't think anything came of it.

I guess that few people are actually willing to sit down and sift through all the games for each system to make a new list, not to mention getting community acceptance for the games that made the pick.

Personally i think that while there might be a fair amount of shovelware it's also easy to just reroll until you get something that isn't outright obviously awful, and even terrible games might be fun to play with community feedback.

>> No.1786442

>>1786175
>>1786208
Pretty much what they said, I just rerolled my NES game until I got something that didn't crash and wasn't too boring. They're still games that I'd otherwise never have played, so I'm enjoying it so far.

May I do a variation on this but with games from my backlog?

I'll go through the order of consoles and stick to the deadline, but instead of random I'll pick a game that I own or have on Flashcart/burnt.

This'll be a good way to get through ones I've had waiting to be played for ages.

Ya I actually found the wiki http://vgauntlet.wikia.com/wiki//v/_Gauntlet_Wiki with the rules when this was done a year or two ago. I can understand removing GBA from the list but taking the double choices is plain retarded. A better system would be removing GBA and making gb/gbc a choice and then putting master system with the game gear.

>> No.1791153

>>1785468
>no N64

But N64 is rather important. I understand emulation is an issue for some games, but that's why it was an alt to PS1. Why was it removed entirely?

>> No.1791475

>>1791153
it was removed because of the dipshit op. I'm all for letting this die after this post so we can get a proper gauntlet.

>> No.1791516

>>1791475
Sounds good.

Honestly I'm not against removing GBA, as long as something is added or shifted to keep a reasonable ten-stage gauntlet. We'd need some type of agreement on it, first, so we don't get something like, well, this thread.

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis

This is what needs to be decided here do we go with dreamcast? or another system? or split the gameboy and gameboycolor as separate choices and move game gear here? OR Sega Master System

>>1793705

>> No.1793729

>>1793368
there is already a source for that http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/NES
while you may not agree that all should be played a good % are. Also ya i know its not a gauntlet but what i think you are suggesting is an approved ten tier guantlet with awesome games and not half shit half okay games. It really fathoms me why no one has come up with different themed gauntlets that can be played over a course of a month or two.

>> No.1793742

>>1793729
I mean randomizing it. I guess it would just take a random number generator.

>> No.1793751

>>1793729
The problem with that is that stuff like >>1785931 and most JP-only games aren't included. Basically, legitimately hidden gems that people play here are absent.

>> No.1793803

>>1793728
thats a good suggestion. haven't played many saturn games.

>>1793751
Thats why I think there should be a separate gauntlet thread where people have their own list for a guantlet. I'm sure you know of some hidden gems that are JP-only that could make up a tiered gauntlet that people would want to go through.
