ok i'll try. First you're going to have to expand your horizons, understand what genres were popular for what eras and why.

What systems are you thinking about ? IMO, the best of all time are snes and saturn for 2d gaming. Let me know what areas of retro games you're interested in and I can give you a heads up.

also IMO, FPS has pretty much always been a shit genre except for quake 3 engine, so don't expect much help there.

As for MOBAs, there are definitely some old games that may play with a similar feel . and by that I simply mean top-down view RPG.

Not all of us are elitist faggots, although most of us aspire to rise through the ranks and claim that title, but we're a pretty cool bunch, generally speaking.

Keep in mind that it is not considered good form to say that:

Anyway, if you're serious about wanting to get into retro gaming, I'd suggest you start with the 4th generation. Now, I won't go as far as to imply that said generation is 'objectively' the best, because that's a much reviled buzzword any way you look at it, but I will say that most /vr/os consider it to be a benchmark in the history of gaming.

This generation is home to some of the best consoles ever:

>Genesis
>Neo Geo
>PC-Engine

Aside from mainstream titles such as Super Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Final Fantasy, Donkey Kong, Metal Slug, Phantasy Star and the like, each of these consoles boasts a rich library of titles covering all genres that are really worth checking out.

My suggestion: For starters, pick the console that's the most appealing to you, judging by production company, and then start hunting for games.

Google is your best friend if you're looking to emulate. If you're looking to start a physical collection, on the other hand, just make sure to master market research, otherwise you'll end up living in a cardboard box under a bridge.

In conclusion, retro gaming is a fuckload of fun. Play nice, and enjoy.

Early 80s: Atari 2600
Late 80s: NES
Early 90s: Genesis/SNES

Those are the major systems, pick one. 2600 & Genesis will probably be the cheaper options, not sure about the NES.

Late 90s, perhaps the Playstation or N64. Problem is the PSX is disc based, so there's the risk of getting a unit with a faulty drive. The N64 is cartridge based and thus less prone to failure, but coming from the age when 3D started to emerge, first impression might come off as some really shitty version of games you're familiar with (which it arguably is.) With older systems, there is the expectation of it to be less whizbang 3D looking.
