Data East was primarily an arcade developer and they made some absolute gems. Let me enlighten your lack of experience. You're going to go download them and try them and be pleasantly surprised. But don't go acting like you "discovered" these games now, okay?

Magical Drop 3
Heavy Smash
Joe & Mac (arcade only)
Joe & Mac Returns
Boogie Wings
Captain America and the Avengers
Night Slashers
Diet Go Go
Crude Buster (arcade only)
Nitro Ball

Remember. You're the one who said that Data East is a "crummy developer". If I trashed one of your favorite developers I'm sure you would've replied in a similar scathing manner. So suck it up.

Plenty of developers have bad games. Data East on the whole I would say made mostly "good enough" games. Sure, Konami has more gems, but they also have a bucket of shit arcade games, too. Different strokes, dude. Besides, beat-em-ups like Final Fight and Streets of Rage are just as empty and cheap as something like Bad Dudes, it's just that they have better music. And pile drivers.

Data East just had the misfortune of not having any key NES games like Castlevania or Mega Man.

Anyway, that's a fantastic game. Now i see where you're coming from. (don't know what tetrisphere is though, must be new) you're playing magdrop 3 with a console mindset

The big difference between your type of puzzle games and arcade puzzle games is the speed, as you have noticed. It's not JUST magical drop that has the one-combo-kill style, most other arcade puzzlers from that era are like that because they emphasize competitive play. One other thing though.. change your neo-geo BIOS region to japan.. the non-japanese BIOSes are notorious for being more difficult...

anyway, i don't see how that makes it shallow. it may not be as appealing as classics like puyo puyo or panel de pon, but it sure as fuck is not more shallow. just not as well-balanced is all
