Anime is not an artstyle, it's another name for Japanese cartoons. You will find all sorts of art styles featured in anime.

It is an art style at the same time. It is distinctly different from other country's animation in how it usually looks.

Anyway, up through the PSX era anime themed cartoons were so cool, so exotic and rare. Seeing adverts for Tales of Destiny really got me pumped for it since the art style was like not much else around at the time. It's kind of sad that nowadays they have flooded the market and are not only nothing special, are boring since there's so many.

It does tend to follow trends during each decade. Besides, everyone knows what a person means when they say "anime art style".

Also I love Wild Arms 2, every time you load up a saved game it plays a short intro movie. So it sets this fantastic atmosphere every time you start up the game. Not only that, it switches things up by giving you a different intro movie for the second disk.

It's BESM, BIG EYES, SMALL MOUTH.

Anywho, in most cases, "anime" style artwork and spritework tended to work better, due to more emphasis being placed on characters' eyes, and external indicators of emotion. At the time in the early nineties, NEO TOKYO IS ABOUT TO E X P L O D E , so HOLY SHIT, MAN, JAPANIMATION EVERYWHERE. Gimme some of dat Escaflowne and El Hazard.

Lost on a tangent. Um... right. Original art styles being left in games was always a treat. Exotic, different.

Entirely new game. The overall structure of the game is a little different, and the traditional "survival" gameplay isn't available at the beginning. Still worth picking up though and maybe it's just me or maybe it's just the 3DS's controls but it feels hard as balls to play.

Also the game has stereoscopic 3D, so I assume thats why they included 3D models.

They don't want to admit that the thing they love classifies as something they are supposed to be hating.
Also, games of that era seldom had ingame graphics clear enough to resemble anime or manga illustrations. I'm pretty sure lot of people never read the manuals and even if they did, there was lot of localization.

Also, most series are short (ie. 1-4 cours of 24 minute episodes) so they easy to digest.

I think the main difference is that modern anime all looks like it was made for TV, whereas old anime looks more like someone took the manga pages and colored them. They have those really start bold lines, because it's supposed to be an art style that looks good in black and white.

I kinda wish there was an /ar/. The Devilman OVA's are almost thirty years old and still look amazing.

Most old anime you are familiar with are OVAs and movies, old TV anime were mostly family friendly shows and some mecha and weren't really impressive in terms of looks.

Also /ar/ is a really bad idea in my opinion, you can talk about any anime in /a/ and there is a "pre 2000 shows" thread every now and then, there isn't really a thing called "retro anime watching" there is nothing differentiating "old anime watching" from "new anime watching" unlike retro gaming also there is much less "retro" anime and much less to talk about, you wont talk about "How do you watch your retro anime" or "What did you purchase", you will be limited with one thread for the whole series and chances are there won't be many people who are watching this series at the moment so most people would be talking out of their memory in addition to that there won't be predictions nor anticipations and much much lesser discussion since the show already ended and most likely threads will morph into generals also any general discussion that's not specific to one show like discussion about art style or characters goes to /a/ since it's not really retro related but rather general anime discussion. That's why /a/ doesn't have lots of threads about old shows (and that's not limited to retro anime, it applies to any show that ended) it's not because they hate it or didn't watch it, it's just that there isn't anything to talk about and you'll see any show that continues to have threads after it ends are mostly generals and circlejerks, this type of discussion is not suited for imageboards it's better in normal forums or in one "pre-2000" thread.

No one is trying to do that. Every studio would animate and master their series at 1080p if they could, but that's not possible with their current budget and time schedules. Animation with higher resolution means that things must be drawn with more detail and care. In the SD times you could fill the backgrounds with half-assed stuff because all of it would be blurred by televisions, but with the switch to HD everything came to plain view so you can end up with something like related picture.

Kyoani is one of the few studios that can keep up a very high standard of animation because they have their own, well-organized animators, but even they master at "only" something like 900p for regular footage (at least for Hyouka; that was when they did only about one or two projects in a whole year, but in 2013 they started putting out their self-produced shows on every season and as a result I think their standards dropped). There are some exceptions like Xebec's Nyaruko W which was mastered completely at 1080p, but in general other studios can't reach that high. Trigger even went as far as making lot of scenes in Kill La Kill at SD level quality to keep a high framerate, which made the show have a very blurry overall look.

The only series with "Adobe Flash look" are the shows that were actually made in Flash (ie. DLE series like Double J, Therma Romae and Reibai-sensei).

>> No.1790112
