Somebody fucking help me

I'm trying to do the early red gem get in Crash Bandicoot 2, and I'm doing the method where you slide off the metal arrow box and jump, spin, and belly flop as high as you can. I can execute this properly over and over again, but it looks like crash is going through the fucking gem but he isn't picking it up. I tested getting the crystal and it kind of looked like crash walked through it a little bit before picking it up, so maybe the same is applying to the red gem. I'm playing this on ePSXe, not sure which version, ROM is the NTSC verison. someone help pls
