I'm not very good at shmups so R-Type 3 was very hard for me. But thanks to the unlimited continues I was able to DSP my way through the game.

The hardest part that stuck out for me were those fucking lava lasers followed by speeding assbackwards through the level again

I love R-Type III, OP. I should try no-continue clearing it again. Last time I blew it on the last level on the second loop. Such a pain to slog through that first loop though. This is -really- one of those games I wish just let you select advanced mission mode right off the bat instead of doing the looping bullshit.

Best shmup on the SNES, although that isn't saying much. Despite severe pacing issues I still love it as part of the R-Type family, just not as much as 1, 2 or Delta. It was the first game in the series I 1cc'd, so it's definitely an easy entry point.

Best ship design, not counting Final's Bydo selection, I wish I could get that Shmup Historica toy.
It's a shame the developer of this series is dead.
I really like their designs, environments and weirdness going on towards the last levels.

Also it appears R-Type has a pretty good background story with humans creating the bydo, then getting rid of them and they travel in time and attack them in the past or something like that.
The intro quotes from Final also dish some feels:
