Hello fellow saturn enthusiasts,
I think after ~4 years, I'm starting to scrape the bottom of the Saturn barrel. It gets bad when you actually buy a copy of Sky Target. Man, what an ugly fucking game. Would not recommend it.

I'm not big into RPGs that I can't read, so that aspect of the library doesn't appeal to me (I mentioned in the other Saturn thread a really interesting game called Chaos Seed - sort of a more combat-focused Rune Factory made by the same RF team). I own all the shooters I'm willing to buy for the system (so no Battle Garegga and Batsugun), and I'm not in to fighting games.

When it comes to Saturn games, I don't need early ugly 3D bullshit, unless the game is so fucking good that I can look past it - it's hard to even tolerate Die Hard Arcade (the game is ok).

So, what are your picks? This is good for people considering getting into the system, since it's so expensive now. It's best to recommend games with low language barriers that have actual quality to them.

>> No.1738202

And because everyone loves lists, this is the list of non-shmup/non-fighting Saturn games I own. If the game is not sold, and its name is NOT Corpse Killer, consider that this anon's official seal of semi-quality, chunky ugly 32bit and all.

-Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean

-Assault Suit Leynos 2
[sold]-Astal
-Bulk Slash
-Capcom Generations 2
[sold]-Chase HQ plus SCI
-Corpse Killer: Graveyard Edition

Is there anything left? Lol, maybe Bubble Symphony.

bump!

I recently ordered a JP copy of Saturn Bomberman for super-cheap, so that'll probably be fun. I actually really like single-player Bomberman campaigns, for some reason (though multi rocks the house).

What's Elevator Action like? It's one of my favorite arcade games. The only sequel I've played is the GBC one.

>> No.1741161

I always recommend Three Dirty Dwarves. I really love that game.

>> No.1741602

>>1740720
Elevator Action 2 is a very good action game. It's slower-paced than most run-n-guns (I hesitate to call it a "run"-n-gun), but the emphasis is on methodically making your way around cool set-piece levels picking off bad-guys and entering doors (lol, think Hotel Mario) for health, ammo, and disarming bombs. The entering doors element is a holdover from Elevator Action and doesn't really add a lot to the experience, but the game itself is very fun. It has a good sense of style, jazzy music, and it has the right mix of cartoonishness and realistic shooting action.

For some reason the Saturn port is very expensive on ebay (I bought it for $50 two years ago, which I felt was high, but a decent price), so I would recommend either the good-enough port on Taito Legends 2 (negligible differences imo) for the PS2, or you can just MAME it. The only way to feasibly get a "cheap" Saturn port is Yahoo Auctions Japan.

while the game looks interesting and beautiful, I don't want to plop down a decent chunk of change on a game that is allegedly piss-easy. I'd probably buy it if it weren't for that.

Not that I don't like easy games, but the videos of Keio 2 make it look like there's never a whole lot going on at any given time.

It's not THAT easy, although some of the difficulty comes from the stupid controls. You can also unlock some extra pictures based on your score which can be both positive and negative depending on how you play (beat up the innocent workers, destroy stuff etc - negative points).

It does have a lot of things going around but they are all decently paced, you don't have everything thrown at you together. There's just a shitload of detail and gag in the backgrounds.

The game is a good example of how 32bit platformers should look, its just that the controls could be made tighter, and it is a bit too short.

It IS overpriced but worth it IMO.

Yeah, I guess my point is that I am no longer in the mood for Working Designs Saturn games.

Their PS library is just by virtue of numbers a safer bet. Shining Wisdom is an awful game (fuck its tap-to-run bullshit), Iron Storm is cool but a little slow for my tastes, and I don't have the money for something like Rayearth (I guess I should have bought it when it was still normally $80!). Dragon Force is the real standout game - a truly excellent SRPG.

You can skip Astal, honestly. It's nothing special and the level design is pretty pedestrian despite the good-looking 2D sprites.

There is Dungeons & Dragons Collection which used to be the only home port of the D&D arcade games, but now they both got ported to every modern platform it's not really worth the exorbant price tag. Also, the loading times can be absolutely abysmal.

If you can run CD-Rs, you might want to try Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru. The game's quality definitely does not reflect it's immense price tag, but it's worth a play.

There is also the Shining Force III trilogy, which are great but require you to be able to run CD-Rs if you want to play them in English. Don't even bother with the original US version of Scenario 1.

It seems like most of the games the Saturn was known for are ported by now, apart from a few like Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, Saga, and the Shining games.

Where do you live? You can ship a V3 Universal modchip from either the UK(consolegoods) or the US(Segastyle) for around ~$35-40 not including shipping. I think it's something like 25-30$. That plus the fact that it has the best compatibility makes it a winner. It only has two problems: Sanyo drives need a fix, and there is a short supply so far (production just started).

The V3 and V2 parts seem to use cannibalized parts from other chips, so they have random compatibility - two identical chips can behave differently on identical hardware. These new chips so far have no such problem.

Looked unique enough, with a competent stab at 3D action-adventure on the Saturn. Probably not Bulk Slash level, but hopefully it's fun.
