Mr Gimmick definitely.

Whilst not the most popular game ever, or even that well known at all, besides among the cult of fans and collectors gained from over the years, Mr Gimmick is a very stand-out title.

I do not know many people who don't consider this as one of the best platformers, or even games in general, for the NES.

What happened to Sunsoft, anyway? They made so many legendary titles for the NES. This one is their most memorable for me.

I agree. Almost all of the games (including the Wiimake) get great scores, yet almost no one knows about the series. Namco hardly marketed the game at all, so it didn't sell that well.

Although the future of the series is uncertain, it isn't a dead one. Namco released one of the GBA games on the Wii U VC, which is a step in the right direction. I hope we see more from the franchise soon.

Yep. Although it ended on a cliffhanger ending (which could either be a good thing or a bad thing).

Like I said. The future of the series is pretty unclear.

Klonoa is a cult classic series that creates great games, but isn't well known (because of Namco's marketing), and Hideo Yoshizawa said wasn't planning on any new games in 2012 (which doesn't mean it won't happen).

On the other side, Klonoa is often referenced in other Namco games, he got a 65 page webcomic with a good writer (that was actually a big fan of the games) and a great artist, and a GBA game released on the VC.

I would also appreciate an official Nintendo localization. It would have been perfect on the DS alongside Hotel Dusk and Another Code and such, but the 3DS could be appropriate for a remake or something.

I have a big problem with reboots. 90% of the time, they seem to either completely rehash the original games to the point of being nauseating, or they completely miss the point of the original games entirely. The only one that immediately comes to mind as successful is Kid Icarus Uprising, because it recognized and referenced its origins well, but also built on them while simultaneously maintaining a core game that was essentially running the same game mechanics. If anyone can do that kind of thing with another series, then I'd be all for it.

For the record, the one series I'd love to see make a comeback is StarTropics. I think Next Level Games could make a good and funny modern successor, especially if they got tips from Sakurai or somebody.

The lack of control that aLttP introduced. I disliked being forced into one area then the next then the next. It wasn't quite hand-holding (that was introduced with LA), but not for me nonetheless.
With the original, the whole of the game was available from the get-go. It was small, sure, but just imagine how ginormous a game with a similar design philosophy would be on a 16-bit cart. The second game had a /relatively/ free-roam world. Then came aLttP, which had some roam elements, but not anywhere near as much as its predecessors. And LA was the beginning of the end for me. No more roaming in that game or any Zelda game that followed it at all. So sad to me.

I was asking about LttP rather than Link Between Warios, but yeah.

By introduction, you mean re-introduction, right? The first Zelda was like that too. They just sort of rediscovered some of what made that game fun, or at least I think so.

>>1740192
That's something I like about Link Between Worlds. It has some guidance in the beginning, and is pretty transparent about what items you should rent and when, but other than that you can pretty much do as you please. For a few dungeons I didn't even know I had to go out of my way and just buy a shield, I kept expecting to be given one like in so many of the games. I agree that the freedom is one of my favorite things about Zelda 1, and I think that ALBW did a good job returning to it. The only thing for me is that I kind of enjoyed how well Link's Awakening slowly opened up more and more exploration through obtaining new items. It's a bit weird to say, since I also like the openness of ALBW, so I guess I'm a bit torn. I'd probably like at least some things to be hidden away in dungeons, while other basic elements were available without clearing the dungeons. It might also just be because LA is my favorite Zelda, which itself may be due to heavy nostalgia factor. Not really sure. Most of what I enjoyed with LA was the characters and the world, as well as the feeling of power that you got from going around and getting more exploration items.

If I were to do it, I may make an overworld where things are locked away by simple inability to navigate terrain (ie. no swimming, so you can't cross a river), and then put beyond those points only dungeons that used that item, so you didn't get there only to see that you needed X item. At the same time, I'm still not sure how I feel about that hindering the openness of choosing dungeons as you want to clear them. Maybe just make it like Mega Man, where basic equipment CAN clear every dungeon, but it's made easier or more rewarding if you use dungeon items effectively.

>> No.1740232

>>1740192
You have free roam in every Zelda game ever, the problem is that the game only unlocks parts of the map as you progress in the story. So you usually get to do the exploration you want by the end of the game when everything is open for you to explore and you have all the items.

I personally enjoyed every Zelda game ever, but the first one is still my favorite. Even though ALttP was the first game I played.

>> No.1740241

You do not have free roam in any but the first. Locking off certain areas until the player has certain items or does certain things is not free roam. You have the entirety of the map of Z1 available from the beginning. You don't have the entirety of the map available in aLttP until you get the hammer, the bird and possibly one or two other items I've forgotten. That's not free roam. That's guided roam.

Sunsoft was incredible at squeezing some of the best possible graphics out of 8-bit systems(NES, GB) and their fantastic licensed games but faltered with 16-bit systems where their games were usually rather plain and mediocre. There were many developers which faded away with the 2D-3D transition, but Sunsoft is one of the few which faded away before that.

They are actually still around, but are mostly focusing on the Japanese market with stuff like pachinko. The last significant game they made was Waku Waku 7 on the Neo-Geo, you might want to check it out.

Many of Sunsoft's 16-bit games were developed by outside companies. I think their only 16-bit game was Batman for the Genesis. Sunsoft is definitely proof of the "Nintendo curse". They betrayed Nintendo by jumping ship to the Genesis, only for them to melt from Nintendo's wrath. That said, Nintendo should buy Sunsoft and see if they still have hardware pushing talent, so that they can develop the most graphically impressive Wii U titles.

The original Zelda allows the player access to the vast majority of the playable area from the very beginning. I'd say even as much as 90%.
Other Zelda titles aLttP onward allow a much, much smaller percentage of that.
Even with that 10% or so of screens inaccessible to a starting game, Z1 is nonetheless free-roaming. The beginning of aLttP only allows the player to go from the starting point to the castle and expands the field of play from there. The initial play area is something akin to about 10% of the total play area. LA, the OoX games and the 64 titles allow for exploration of an even smaller percentage of the game at the beginning.
You can split hairs and say "well, you can't access some areas" all you'd like, but being unable to access "some areas" from the beginning differs greatly from being unable to access the vast majority of areas from the beginning.

I'm having a hard time picking a retro series I'd like to make a comeback, simply because modern developers couldn't handle any of them properly.

Something like Rival Schools would turn into SFIV level shit with no balance at all and un-fun gameplay. And wel already saw what Capcom does with Reboots and reimaginings thanks to what has become of Resident Evil and DmC as series'.

And for that matter, if I wanted to play a modern(ish) Rival Schools, I'd just get a copy of Project Justice. If I wanted to play a modern RE, I'd play REmake. ect. Many classic series either already have modern-ish installments, equivalents or spiritual successors. Not all, but many.

Though to be honest, I think some things should just remain dead and new ideas should come into their own. Constant reboots, remakes and sequels are what's killing the modern videogame and movie markets.

That said, if I got my way and a "perfect" revival were to happen, I'd go with Crystalis.

Gameplay like Genji for the PS2 (decent hack n slash gameplay with strong RPG elements, unlike modern ARPGs that all suck cock in the gameplay department) a remastered version of the original soundtrack, maybe more of an actual plot this time around, implement gameplay and design ideas from action adventure games (90's ones, not Uncharted and such..), definitely make the thing longer and a little more open ended (not GTA open ended, but less linear anyway) and an art style that does the original justice while looking good by today's standards. Not animu art, but not "hyper realistic" western shit either. Something more original. And no goddamned fully voiced shit either. Shit like that just takes budget away from things that matter. I would want 99% of the budget to go to the gameplay, as that's what's important, really.

Two leap to mind:

Guardian Legend. SHUMP+Metroidvania doesn't seem like they'd go together, but good lord they do. Add a bit more tense, mildy spooky vibe to the exploration sections, to contrast with the high-intensity shooting sections, and it'd be amazing. Plus, c'mon, jet girl.

As an oddball second: Battle Hunter. a bullshit, poorly made "action" game? oh hell yes...and also a multiplayer game that's slightly less addictive then crack. add some decent graphics, multi-level dungeons, and a better card system, and release it on steam or a console network. You'd have people beating down the door.

Might be personal preference, but i really think either of these would fly.

Seems like they tried to revamp the original, added some new content and made the player characters overpowered. Then, they removed some things, such as fun as well as any semblance of challenge. It's a shame that GsH GBA had to get such a drastic fun-ectomy. It's truly a crime.

I'm going to have to agree with Pokémon Snap, Mischief Makers, Banjo Kazooie, Secret of Evermore, Dino Crisis, Tombi/Tomba and add Mother/Earthbound (worldwide release), Actraiser, Chrono Trigger (Chrono Cross wasn't what I had in mind), Pocky & Rocky, E.V.O Search for Eden, Demons Crest, Earthworm Jim, Clayfighter, Soul Blazer, plus more that have slipped my mind. Also Starfox is coming to Wii U (quiet announcement at e3) and there is a fan-made remake of Zelda 1 on oculus that's a retro looking 3d similar to the fan made Pokémon 3d.

I concur about Gargoyle's Quest/Demon's Crest. I've always wanted to see a game in which you switch between Sir Arthur and Firebrand to battle a common foe.

>>1743262
>Turn-based Zelda RPG
I think that would be just the bullet necessary to put this tortured series to rest. Going to an RPG format would be the final step to making Zelda as slow, tedious, and unengaging as possible.
>Try to push some blocks around
>Get interrupted by a random battle
>Mash 'A' until you win
>Enemy drops a rupee
>Reminded for the thousandth time of what a red rupee is worth
Now, if you wanted to propose a SMRPG-style game that was to RPGs what Smash Bros. is to fighting games... I think I could deal.

There's a alot of potential for the many retro game series to have a comeback. The problem is if there is a developer good enough to make that good retro game even better than before.

Why hasn't there been a hack and slash Strider Hiryu? It would play like Metal Gear Rising except much harder and being swarmed by many enemies, big and small.

Why hasn't there a remake of Final Fight that plays like Shenmue where your not just your fighting the Mad Gear Gang, you would be exploring the town of Metro City, talking with locales, doing mundane stuff like shopping for clothes, training your skills, wasting your time playing the arcades(Final Fight 1 included) or if your the Mayor of Metro City, you would be handling the city taxes or something?

Why hasn't there been a 3d Mega man where you could do the usual 2d Megaman gameplay of killing those 8 robot masters/mavericks/whatever, traversing their hideouts, killing enemies while doing some insane platforming like jumping great distances, walljumping and more.

or a Hack and Slash remake of Megaman Zero, where you do all that shit I said above except you as Zero.

I could talk all day about this but it goes to show that many retro series have the potential to make a big comeback. The problem is if there a developer good enough to do it.

I don't think Mega Man in its original style is meant for 3D. Legends was the ideal way to adapt the series to the third dimension, a thematically similar game that remains a clear break from the original series style.

As for the Final Fight/Shenmue thing, I had that idea for a beat'em up for a while now. The main issue I think is that it would take too much time and money to be profitable, and no matter how good of a game you make, you gotta be profitable or you don't make games anymore.

Nina was rotting in some village being daily harrassed by a gang. If you weren't into fanfictions, you would see that her mind is broken because of the past and she is willing to commit suicide but doesn't have enough character to do so. She is living a dragged out life. Ryu & co pulled her ass out of this. Now she got the power of determination and is willing to live and help. She had nothing before, now she has world and friends to protect. Just like every party member.

The whole party got new friends during the adventure. And great amount of these friends perished. Thus almost everyone sacrificed a thing or two by joining Ryu. Party members sacrificed their ordinary serene lives, lives without being teared over beloved ones dying for having friends and seing the world.

Everyone got worse but at the same time got much better. The statement about Nina only "losing" is incorrect. She lost equally the same amount as everyone but gained much more in the end.

Everyone in BoF2 is willing to help and, moreso, to sacrifice himself. Every party member. Nina 2 isn't a special snowflake and equally with everyone else contributes to anfini and generally to "victory". Basically just like in any BoF.

I would fucking love to see a remake of this game.
So many memories of me and my family figuring out how to beat all the rooms.

I'd like to see Castlevania brought back to 8-bit graphics kinda like what Capcom did with Mega Man 9.

>Bring back the 8-bit
Stop.

Graphics don't mean shit when the gameplay is garbage to go along with it. It's not the aesthetics that should be focused on to revive a retro title, it's about everything else but.

Though if they had some leftover money it wouldn't hurt, certainly.

Clash at Demonhead full remake on the PS4. Sprites, though, none of that 2.5D shit.

I hate being called a graphics whore for point that out. You call a shameless nostalgia cash grab what it is and suddenly every 30 year old gamer thinks you just kicked their child hood dog Rex.

Mega man games weren't good because they where 8 bit, the music wasn't good because they where made in chip tunes they where good DESPITE all that

>Like I said. The future of the series is pretty unclear.

When your series has more people interested in gay porn than actually playing the game then that's a pretty clear sign it's dead m8.

I really like the old, crisp sprites that leave no room for confusion on hitboxes and other stuff. When you start going with better, more detailed graphics, particularly 3D, a game's artwork can get too busy and detract from actually playing the game.

When graphics influence the gameplay such as this, I'm all for it. Otherwise I'd say focus should all be towards making things play as intended instead, since it seems there's so much focus on appearance on games for most of these big titles. It's nice if a game looks nice, but I'd rather a game that plays perfect but looks like ass if I had to choose.

No Square-Enix, this doesn't give you a free pass with FF ports. That game already played nice.

MM9 did some really shameless MM2 nostalgia pandering and I hated that, but the bosses and level design are pretty damn solid. The effort was there where it mattered most.
