/vr/ I just can't seem to get into the n64 much. I thought I'd love it but I just realized that I barely play mine and barely have any games for it. I grew up on the playstation and never got an n64 until about two years ago. to me it just feels like the playstation is so much more superior. that's my opinion of course though.

anyway, I need some convincing. what are some solid, but cheap titles I can pickup similar to the must have playstation library?
I'm a huge zelda fan so I have mm and oot, I've also beat mario 64, have paper mario but got bored with it, star wars pod racer but I'm not big into racers, and rampage which I love, but only bought because I lost my playstation copy.

I want games like spyro, crash bandicoot, ff7, tomb raider, metal gear solid, resident evil, y'know. the works.

can I get some help here?

Yoshi Story is a great game to me, one of my favorites for N64. I also like Donkey Kong 64 but not sure how much it goes for. The Gex games are fun (pref deep cover gecko) but are also available on PS. Perfect dark is a good games too. I don't really know much off the top of my head besides the popular stuff, sorry.

Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie are both Excellent.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Battle For Naboo and Shadows of the Empire are also all great.
Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark are both amazing.
Starfox 64 is also very good.
Jet Force Gemini is a nice 3rd person shooter.
And I'm a big fan of Bomberman 64 and Bomberman 64: The Second Attack, although they're not exactly cheap if I remember correctly.

There are not many big RPGs on the system, apart from Paper Mario, you've got Ogre Battle 64 (one of the best in the series), and some others but most are japan-only (Super Robot Taisen, Shiren 2, etc).
Then there's Hybrid Heaven which is a weird game that mixes TPS, wrestling and turn-based combat, all with a level up system for each part of your body. It's worth playing if you want an unusual RPG, the battle system is solid.

>tomb raider, metal gear solid, resident evil

Hmmm, if you don't find the controls of Tomb Raider bad, then play both Castlevania titles on the N64, they've got a good mix of action and survival horror inspired by Resident Evil a bit.
Play Jet Force Gemini, a good Rare FPS. Just be sure to set the controls to "Expert".
There's a port of Resident Evil 2 that's actually pretty good and worth checking out even if you already played it on PS1.

I don't think any of those games should be too pricey except maybe for Ogre Battle. I'd also reccommend getting an Everdrive if you can, I think it can run every N64 title flawlessly, and there's some imports that you must definitely play on it, like Sin and Punishment. Of course, you can also mod your console to play japanese games, but some of these games are expensive too. So it depends whether you want to collect or to play

Same boat.

I was drawn to the solid single player titles of the PS1. I don't want to say 'more grown up' but they just really appealed to me at the time, and still do. The N64 by comparison was a kid's toy. Again, this was my own speculation at the time, plus most of my friends opted for the PS1, that probably played a big part.

Please don't think I'm bashing Nintendo, I've got a Wii U and I friggin love it. But as a kid, committing myself to a next gen console was a decision based on what looked the best in adverts, and I was previously raised on Sega.

When I was able to buy any console I wanted I picked one up and got Mario64, Cruisin' USA, Turok, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium and Goldeneye. This was when I had a PS2 so I didn't play it much anyway but I could see why people would favour it over the others.

As for the best games on the N64, you probably know them all, but they're too damn expensive to buy, and emulation just doesn't give you the satisfaction. So I dunno.

Nintendo has always marketed towards younger audiences. However, they really set the age bar low with the Wii/Wii U. Those consoles are entirely marketed towards casual gamers and family settings/soccer moms with kids. In the 90's era, there wasn't really a market for casual gamers, because there weren't enough gaming companies to create that kind of variety. If you wanted to game, you had to contend with the fact that Nintendo dominated the industry. Now that has changed. And, many of Nintendo's current titles are simply recycled bits of franchises that peaked in the 90s. So, by my criteria, you can't call yourself a fan of Nintendo if you dislike the n64.

Eh every console has a presentation that looks like it's marketed towards normalfags (360 had a particularly infamous MTV one). If you look at what Nintendo were actually doing with the console it was a goddamn Frankenstein that didn't know who it was for.
> Is it a personal gaming machine, a family console, or maybe a multimedia device? Who's supposed to own it and what is it supposed to do?
Yes exactly this. It started out a little casualish with Nintendoland (although it uses Nintendo characters that a lot of casuals would never have heard of?) which flopped hard, and from then on it's really niche games like Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2, Wind Waker HD where the original game sold pretty badly, Pikmin 3 which is another sequel to a poorly selling Gamecube game. The Wii U is literally the Gamecube redux.

Yeah ... Anyway though let me get this straight. Despite the fact that you own all of that Nintendo stuff, you dislike the n64, which is generally considered god-tier as far as consoles go? And you ask why I mistook that for a hypothetical? I mean I figured you just weren't into older Nintendo consoles.

Or do you think it's the norm for people to like the NES/SNES and dislike the n64? That would just be wrong.

The thing that sets the n64 apart for me, besides the excellent games/stories, is the games' use of color. Newer games (and even to some extent older games) use dark gradients and blended tones across smooth surfaces. For me that doesn't make them grittier, it just makes them more depressing. The n64 games aren't just fun to beat; they're fun to view. So check out Banjo Kazooie/Goldeneye/Perfect Dark.

Those are games literally off the top of my head. Conversely the same is said about my Strategy JRPG list, but I could've named most of the other JRPG's the other anon posted.

Since no one is posting N64 titles anymore its kind of hard to discuss that the N64 library is full of good games.

Banjo Kazooie (i didnt like tooie very much)
i liked Yoshi's Story even though its on the child side of games
Super Smash Bros
Jet Force Gemini is pretty good except for that goddamn final objective

The Japanese library is great. A shame that many of the best games didn't come to the US, such as the superior original release of Grandia or the other 2 parts of Shining Force.

N64 was not god tier, it just had a great lineup of games. PS1 was miles ahead in terms of a better system

And there is always that one faggot saying the board is becoming like /v/ who either:

A.) doesn't regularly go on /v/ so can't really make said comparison or...

b.) is able to make the comparison because they go on /v/ and perpetuate the behavior they claim to hate.

So shut the fuck up about "muh /vr/" and if you don't like a thread, don't fucking post. Make your own. Entity its

All these Rpgs you guys mentioned only went to Playstation due to larger disk sizes and cheaper manufacturing costs, also Nintendo president at the time said some stupid stuff to Squaresoft which sent them packing in a hissy fit and leaving Nintendo without any titles from them till FF Tactics Advance, Although there aren't very many RPG's on the N64 there are still quality games from 1st and 2nd party with a couple decent 3rd party games, but far fewer since 3rd parties struggled with costs of publishing on 64.
Also remember that the expansion pack is needed to fully take advantage of the later games like Perfect Dark, Banjo Tooie, DK64, Conkers Bad Fur Day and a few more which shows the inconsistencies in gameplay

> Ogre Battle and Sin & Punishment.

MAH-BOI!

Also, saw it briefly mentioned once or twice, but Body Harvest was a great , unique game (also from DMA).

Did anyone ever play Wetrix? I only briefly rented it, but it was an interesting puzzle game where your random falling pieces affected the shape of terrain and you had to make the playing field hold as much water as possible as it rained, occassionally getting pieces that would destroy terrain necessitating quick repair.

Why is Castlevania 64 hated so much? While I agree the controls could have been tighter, it had some great atmosphere and cool level designs. It also felt more like a Castlevania game than this new reboot we got (which I enjoy, but you know what I mean).

The only criticisms I ever see for Castlevania 64 seem to be "3DPD" and "motorcycle skeletons are dumm."

Get real, skeletons on motorcycles are as cool as it gets.

Probably because clumpsy 3D interface and controlls.

At the same time SOTN, on the other hand, took the castle to a new level and that's why people remember it fondly. The graphics also aged a lot better.
