the absolute worse right here
I recently stopped by a game shop since I had an interview nearby and I know it's more of a tabletop place but they really half ass everything else so you'll see loose comics from 3 years ago, random manga and anime on a shelf to the side and overpriced nerd shit everywhere. Obviously the worse was the video games, now it wasn't the overpriced NES and Genesis games that bothered me because who the hell is going to touch a generic sports game for the price, it wasn't even the mis-marked NES that said SNES for $100. The worse offender was the 2 $60 N64's with 3rd party AC and A/V cables where they (along with the rest of the vidya related items) SHRINK WRAPPED THE N64 CONTROLLERS.
Those poor things were done and you knew the poor bastard that would eventually over pay for the system would end up with a faulty stick and no way to enjoy the system

One store has tons of good games that will sit there for all eternity, because the owner way overprices them. He makes his money as a middleman for system repairs, I recall him saying one day how he doesn't need to sell anything so long as the repairs keep coming in.

So there sits stacks and stacks of good NES games, few if any that ever sell because of the high prices, it's depressing. It's like being teased, I'd love to have a ton of what he's got in there, but even ebay is cheaper.

If that guy is like any of the reseller scum in my area, he'd be much more likely to destroy his vidya than to sell it all at liquidation prices.

There's a place by me that does this too. They shrinkwrap the entire console, and game carts that are over a certain price threshold. I have no idea why they do it. I asked one of the people there and he didn't know either, that's just what they're supposed to do. It seems random sometimes though, I've seen a beat to shit OoT shrinkwrapped, next to an unshrinkwrapped copy in perfect condition, next to Bad Fur Day without it.

It is sad. When I say overpriced to the point that nobody wants it, I'm talking in the realm of $45 Mega Man 4, $15+ any NES Double Dragon. Basically anything worth having for the NES is behind the counter, and you don't want to be asking for the price, because you're not going to like it.

Another story, is that I actually met two faggot resellers at a flea market. They go skim all the games there and take it to their shop to resell. I actually went and checked it out, tons of games, but they were quite the fuckers. They were good to me personally as people, but just seeing their business and talking to them for a bit really shows that they're just a bunch of awful fuckers. Although I'm sure the vendors at the flea market could give a flying fuck since their stuff is getting bought, but to me out there looking for games it's hard to not want to brutally gut the resellers.

Super Mario World shouldn't be that expensive, yet they keep asking 30-40 bucks for it. Absolutely ridiculous, it was included for free with some SNES packages back in the times, and the game sold so well anyway so it shouldn't be considered as rare and expensive.

There's a 'retro' game shop in my area.
The guy who owns it has a day job. He's a lawyer or something? Not sure. Routinely see him in town in a suit and tie going into or coming out of a high-rise office building near my office. That building houses a lawfirm, so far as I know, but perhaps he works in accounting or PR at the firm or something.
Anyway, his store? It's only open Saturday and Sunday and only from noon to five and outside of those hours by appointment.
The prices at which he sells are fair, but the hours fuck me so that's the only pet peeve I have. That, and the fact that it lacks a bathroom.

He refuses to sell on eBay or Amazon because he finds that buyers are skeptical about having such reasonable prices on the games he offers without trying the game in action first, so he only sells from his store front. It's in a modular rather than a building proper. Basically, a shipping crate with electricity for heating, cooling and lights.
There's no bathroom, not even for him.

Fuck the hours, though.

Even the owner laments the lack of facilities but he only lives a short bit aways away from the shop so he can walk the few dozen yards over to his flat to have a wee.
Since the shop is just about dead centre of a residential area and the nearest café, bar or whathaveyou is a good ways away, customers are basically fucked.

There's this thing called "public liability insurance" and usually part of the stipulations are that you don't let any customers into the designated staff-only areas. It costs more to insure when you have stuff like public bathrooms, plus if you have one bathroom you need to get another so that there can be a male and a female, and you have the legal obligation to train staff on cleaning and sanitation for it and stuff... So basically he probably has one, it's just way more hassle than it's worth to let customers use it.

You would probably do the same too, rather than have to go in there an clean out some neckbeard's sloppy remnants every night after closing.

But that's wrong.
Wholly. Utterly. Stupidly. Wrong.
For one, you're assuming the shop in question is in the same country, region/state/province, county/township/administrative area and/or city/town/village as you. The law varies widely and wildly place to place, even between two neighbouring municipalities.

Secondly, I've never in my life ever seen a single independent shop, café, restaurant or other place of business with separate bathrooms for each gender let alone separate bathrooms for staff and customers. Ever. And I currently live nearly 5000 miles away from where I was born and over 8500 miles away from where I grew up. Been the world over, Anon, and I've never seen an independent business with separate loos for either sex.
Finally, and this is the big important bit, shut up.

What they do, that seems simple, and easy to them, is a mother fucking complex nightmare to a person with common sense. What seems simple, and easy to understand is brain surgery to them. You will reach a point where your only conclusion is that they make each decision regarding a complex problem by doing some kind of Raindance and then winging it.

Anon I recommend you go to Digital Press in Clifton. The staff is friendly and the prices are generally fair. IMO the best part it their mini arcade, they have some Japanese rhythm game, Nintendo Play Choice 10, a cabinet with a wheel for various racing games, a Taito physical game called Ice Cold Beer (look it up, it's cool), a cabinet with maybe 10 or so fighting games on it, another loaded with Raspberry Pi and well over 100 games including various shumps, and an OG Donkey Kong 3. Once a month they have a gathering where they let some customers bring in boxes of various games and consoles to buy/sell/trade, a tournament of a competitive game, and a high score contest on one of the cabinets. You can tell whoever runs this place actually loves gaming, especially retro. They even have a mini "museum" which is a windowed display that honors a franchise that changes every month or so. Any /vr/ anon should stop in if they're ever in the area.

Besides I have my good days when I get great deals. I think the only really stupid thing that pisses me off is the "Mario Tax".
The only "great" finds I've ever had were a $15 NES with like 7-8~ games and a Super Nintendo I got at a half price day at a thrift store for $10.
Those finds were like 5-6~ years apart, so hopefully down the line I get fucking lucky with something good.

Well, it's more or less a preference thing. Some collectors swear in the name of PAL-B SCN releases, which are the ones sold originally here in Finland. Some are hardcore for NTSC saying that games should be run on the original speed they were meant to.

And there's more casual collectors who buy what they want like me. I usually buy NTSC or Japanese versions when there's no PAL available or PAL version is super expensive. Most people just buy PAL B games without caring for area codes and stuff.

(PAL A is UK/Italy area which games won't work on PAL B without modding the NES - great, huh?)

I ran across such a CL ad last night. The seller had the audacity to post 'don't ask me a bunch of questions because it's all answered here.'
It's fucking not.
The ad said "nintendo with some games, some wires and some paddles. $50."
Doesn't say which Nintendo, which games, which wires and how many paddles. I wasn't interested in the ad itself but wanted to know what games the poster was selling only to be met with this bullshit. Also: no pictures.

Yup, one particular incident I can remember (beware, tear-jerker moments ahead):

A while back (4 or so years ago, shortly before the retro bubble's exorbitant inflation), someone opened up a retro hobby shop in my area. Lots of good stuff; however the video games in the store were incredibly overpriced, even for the pre-bubble era. As was expected, there was little to no business, its closure would be inevitable.

Fast forward to 2013, the retro bubble is in full swing and, as I predicted, the shop had closed down and the owner nowhere in sight. I was browsing the other shops nearby and I had just bought a Full Throttle at a liquor store.
CAUTION: READER DISCRETION ADVISED
As I finished it and went to throw the can away, I noticed a small reflective glint at the bottom of the trash can. I reached in and pulled out a copy of Skate or Die! broken in half down the middle, no ROM board in sight. The fucking owner had been throwing the games away.

I did the research and the one I'm buying has a NOAC/SNES Motherboard combo, so only half of it is emulated. The SNES part is the part I care about anyway, and the reviews for it are glowing with praise - and I was looking at reviews that were six years old. The system's undoubtedly gotten better.

I hope one day someone just straight up starts manufacturing the original systems again. Until then I'll stick with my cheap reproduction. At least this way I'm only paying through the nose for the games.

This reminds me of a story

>Go to large flea-market a couple of towns over with some friends
>Find out there's a retro game stand
>Find it and nearly vomit
>Huge shelves of dirty half broken consoles stacked on top of each other
>Literally 20 Genesis's stacked in there all dusty and gross
>Games and excess consoles just laying all over the floor behind the counter
>Can barely tell what he has because all of the games are stacked in the back and he has no list or anything.
>The guy is barely there at all because he's too busy at his other "used electronics" stand
>When he finally comes over to talk to us he just steps on all the stuff laying behind the counter like it's no big deal

It's a painful memory etched permanently in my memory. I still remember that poor, broken Gamegear laying in the corner all sad and abandoned, and seeing some of my favorite games covered in dust and grime.

Bought the loose cart yesterday. I need to find the case, manual and map. Where else are you going to find those things except eBay, CL, etc?

It's super sad. I need a Mega Man X Box, A Lion King Box and the box for A Link to the Past and I used to be able to just find them in a junk box at a flea market. Now I have to look at eBay and pay $40 + shipping for cardboard.

And I say "need" and "have to" and of course I don't HAVE to do that stuff. But some of us like the challenge in playing the games AND finding them. That's kinda how all collecting hobbies are. It's relative.

I buy stock photo items from japanese sellers, they very honest with their listings. When they say some small scratches the CD is usually like new condition. Even things that get B graded are still in good shape because they seem to have higher standards.

Sounds like a G2K games. If it is the reason for the shrink wrap, at least my store, is to protect the case or product from sticker residue and/or show proof of being unopened in case of return.

But what's the deal with the N64 controllers being shrinkwrapped? How would that harm them?

I've fucking had it, /vr/. I'm sick of these flaky Craigslist assholes. I'm sick of being the one giving THEM money, only to have to chase them down for a good time to meet, etc.

>seller is selling Legend of Mana for $30, Monster Rancher 2 for $20, and Legend of Legaia for $30, all in excellent condition, like new
>hop on that shit on Thursday, contact them, unfortunately our work/other schedules won't let us meet until Sunday (tomorrow)
>I offer him $10 extra to hold the games for me until then, been extremely polite and upbeat during the texting, he agrees
>Message him today to make sure and confirm everything is all set, he doesn't respond
>Message him again later today, doesn't respond

Fucks sake. If you did do the dick move and sold to someone else after telling me otherwise, at least just let me know so I can clear my schedule. I turned down hanging out with a friend for this shit.

Lol how do these people think business works? I can get an NES in the box with at least one controller for $40 from a trusted reliable local store, that is my standard. If anyone goes higher than that I simply ignore them. It's called hanging your own rope, and these people love it.

i stay away from buying genesis bundles for the sole fact that no one wants to buy the system. i already have a model 2 w/CD and when i get that sweet sweet CDX one day, im giving the model 2 to a friend.

i couldn't sell a genesis for 5 bucks and at that price its not worth it to me because the other games in the bundle would be shit like sports or sanic games and even if i put it up to 15 bucks, it would sit so damn long.

same with PS2 and Xbox, gamecube as well, even with mario games and at a fair price no one wants to buy.
