I know this is the doom general, but I figure you're the best people to ask.

Do any of you know where I could get an (untouched) copy of the hexen 2 source release? Fileplanet is dead so the official release is long gone, and everything else I've found has been modified already.

I mostly agree with this guy, technicians need a buff compared to the other two. Though I think it should come in as Technician having unique assemblies, or mods not used for assemlies being more powerful or giving minor extra effects. Like bulk mods improving mag size by 40%, Damage increase from power mods going up by 50%, Agility mods acting like 2/3 of a sniper mod, Technical mods improve reloading further, that kind of thing.

Reminder that much of Robert Prince's music for Duke Nukem 3D feels right at home at Doom, and much of DN3D's score (at least Prince's contributions) should be considered an unnofficial Doom score.

Because it's ugly as hell. Doom engine couldn't really do those kind of environments well.

It's either that level or another one that's a confusing maze inside some fortress with lava and teleporters. I hate levels where you have to traverse over dangerous terrain. I keep getting lost and dying, or at least losing tons of health.

If we have the TECHNOLOGY! I would make its pilot still alive, screaming and trashing, trying to get out. It has demon bits and pieces embended on it which prevent him from getting out of the suit.

There you have a legitimate moral choice in a shootan game that doesn't have or need any;
>Pilot Alive
He wrestles with the controls all the time, he can stop for a few seconds but needs your help to get out. Rescuing the dude requires damaging the suit heavily without destroying it and evading its attacks for some time so he can stop.
>Pilot Dead
Pilot is dead inside, visually different so you don't waste time for a chance to rescue the pilot, demonic bits cover more of the suit. Still loses control as bits from different demons don't coordinate well and fight with each other for control.
>Fully Possesed
Now it is completely possesed, suit is completely consumed except weapons and the dead body of pilot. From the bits stuck on suit, one of the demons is dominating others. So it looks like the beloved Revenant, a stretched out skeleton coated with a thin layer of demonic skin. Never loses control and it is very agitated.

They can be variants or phases for a unique encounter.

The armors that can be Onyx-modded aren't going to change.

Anybody played Satanic Redux? I found it by accident the other night.

It's basically a gameplay mod that makes you a necromancer. There are NO health powerups, and you have to gain health by using magic items at mana cost, or by killing things with blood magic. You can also possess monsters and turn them to your side. You regain mana by consuming corpses in a blood ritual.

It's hard as FUCK because you usually have to put yourself in serious danger to regain any health.

Instead what I run into almost every playthrough is a variant of :
>find tactical combo
>find ballistic shield
>enter level filled to the brim with hitscan, but cannot make use of my shield without destroying my glorious combo and gimping myself for the rest of the game
>even have a fucking onyx pack to spare and an indestructible tactical would be the least op thing ever since its already pretty impossible to break, it would literally just allow me to remove it, but no, cant have fun, that would be SILLY

Why do shields exist again? Or rather, why do so many fucking armors are already inherently indestructible and well rounded?
The only decent armor I found so far that I wanted an onyx to extend its lifetime instead of allowing removal was the gothic armor. Everything else was either self-repairing, already indestructible or low protection/high resistances so it wouldnt degrade enough for me to risk losing it in the first place.

I feel like I am missing something obvious.
This armor system plays like the complete opposite of doomrl.
>Setting armor to 1 instead of breaking is silly, I might as well make them indestructible.
Having to find 4 armor bonuses to repair your armor after every switch is not enough? Seriously?
You might as well make all rare armors destructible and remove onyx packs, that will force me to
>wear the ones you think are best for the moment!
instead of using the same armor for 25 maps and ignoring my second armor slot until I find something that outshines it in every way.

So what's the deal with ACS? I see the word thrown about a lot, Doomwiki says it's a scripting language but how come some people don't seem to use it, what kind of drawbacks does it have? Is it not as compatible universally as decorate?

>> No.1739695

>>1739670

Neither Decorate nor ACS are universally compatible. But ACS is quite a bit more complicated than Decorate is.
Decorate is babby's first Flash Actionscript, ACS is babby's first C.

>> No.1739724

>>1739670
ACS can only be used in ZDoom; it also is only compatible with actual ZDoom maps (Doom In Hexen Format) as opposed to vanilla Doom or Boom-compatible.

ACS lets you do all kinds of stuff pretty easily that you might want to actually do--for example, you can make monster closets open up when the player picks up a key. Now, this is kind of doable in vanilla but it won't be when the player picks up the key, merely when they walk over a linedef that's around the key.

You can also use it to, for example, make a switch open up a door AND lower a platform, something that's not possible in vanilla. Or you could make it so you need both the red and blue keys to make a lift work, or a door only open up if the player's health is over a certain amount. These are just examples.

The reason some people might not use it is ZDoom features tend to have a stigmata attached to them for some reason, and because, like I said, it's not really compatible with vanilla map formats. (Other than scripts that run all the time, like some of the DoomRPG stuff.)

As the other anon said, ACS is basically babby's first C, but if you learn the context and shit you will actually be able to move to C a little easier. (I took a class on C in college so I have a little knowledge on how the formatting works.) It's more complicated than DECORATE but it serves a different function.

ACS is how you script things in Hexen and ZDoom/UDMF levels.
Literally every map that is in Hexen format and UDMF format uses them. When you have a tagged linedef, it calls an ACS function. It's short for Action Script or something (not as in ActionScript for flash.).

Here's an example of some of my (shitty) ACS code. Linedefs can be tagged to either run a single function or entire scripts of ACS code, compiled in its own ACS function or the SCRIPTS lump of a map.

DECORATE is something completely different, but also Hexen/ZDoom specific. It's just for making new shit.

Everything in Doom RPG is written with DamnScript and uses all kinds of C-like features such as structs and pointers.

Is there any documentation on "damnscript"? I've never heard of it. Sounds cool though. I'm having pretty smooth sailing with ACS except for the one big mathematical obstacle of translating world coordinates for objects to screenspace coordinates, taking all fovs, aspect ratios, and whatever and adjusting automatically for them.

Yeah, I think his general assumption is that anybody using (or needing) DS is already familiar with C. it can become a LOT more complicated than ACS when you start using more of it's features. DRPG for example has gotten to the point where I need to pass a slew of parameters to the compiler, do linking, etc. I'm basically compiling a C program that ZDoom understands at this point.

Funnily enough, the biggest roadblock was when I hit every ACS limit imaginable, maximum global vars, maximum functions, maximum variables per function, etc.

I had to port the entire codebase over to DS. It took a good week before it was even back in a playable state again. Even then there were still a ton of bugs that needed to be ironed out.

-No Jump
-No Crouch
-No crosshairs
-No Freelook
-No viaticals
-Weapons stay
-Items, powerups and barrels respawn
-100% kills needed to exit a level
-Actors infinitely tall

My E1M3 for Ultimate Doom In Name Only is FINALLY done, or at least, the level is playable. I'd appreciate some testing from the /vr/ crew.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/n6e8mivpn44fuuw/E1M3.wad

Take note: It uses the nukage fall textures from Doom 2 so it won't run on it's own; you need to run Doom 2 as a pwad alongside it. It won't crash ZDoom with the missing textures though, if you want to play it there. I'm sure there's some tutti fruti that I need to fix or something but I'll check that later.

I think this is going to be a tougher wad to make than Doom 2 In Name Only because a lot of the level names are kind of slapped on after-the-fact. There's nothing about the original E1M3 that says "Toxin Refinery" other than the big nukage pit in the beginning. I ended up using a bunch of E1-type rooms and shit. I also broke one of the guy's rules and used teleporters, because fuck him, I wanted to use it.

Have fun. It's fucking huge.

Hexagonal plates look weird as ceiling textures to me
Some doors have moving side textures
Teleporter from the secret below the hazard suit on the slime floor doesn't work (and the room itself is slightly lowered, with a missing lower texture
Computer area map room shows up on the automap before you enter it
Raising the bridge and turning the pumps on was cool
The final maze-like area behind the red door in the beginning felt rather odd

Overall: Solid homage, but I not that interesting by itself. Structurally it felt very much based on the original map, which I thought wasn't the goal of "in name only".

So me and Yholl are on Skype together a lot, working on things and just generally talking and goofing about. Today? He was about to lose his sanity over the Hellstorm Elemental. But he spent the ENTIRE DAY working on it and pushing through until he beat that bastard into working decently. I've never seen him go so crazy over something before.

Oh and this; what do you think a "toxin refinery" would look like? There's nukage all over the place. I have to stay within E1 parameters, so it's going to be a little derivative. I dunno.

I should point out a few things, first, the left side of the gun should be smooth, the right side has the ejection port.
Second, there doesn't seem to be a windage adjustment on the sight/carry handle.
Third, logically, there shouldn't be ever be a star shaped muzzle-flash where fire spikes straight up, flash-hiders and stuff were specifically made to prevent flash from kicking up into your sight picture.
To keep the dynamic look of the flash, have randomizations for it, have them always be in the same angle, but slightly varying in size and shape and length of the "arms" of the flash.

It should also probably cycle a bit faster.
It looks pretty good, but it needs polish.

Also to note, there's no charging handle on the side, the T shaped tab below the rear sight is the charging handle. It does not reciprocate when the gun is fired.

(Although, properly, the bolt should lock in an open position when the last round is fired, requiring you to only switch the magazine, and then hit the bolt-release, meaning you don't have to manually rack the charging-handle in most circumstances)

muzzleflashes in games follow the rule of cool, not because the devs are ignorant but because it's compensating for the things that you can't experience firing a gun in a game (like kickback, the sound, the smell, .etc) If guns had no dramatic muzzleflash in a game it would look silly unless the sound was accurately modelled as well (and no way that's happening in Doom)

>> No.1743265

>>1743235

I know, but I just personally want the flash-hider to it's job of protecting your sight picture. It'd still be dynamic and cool, blazing out between the prongs of the flash hider, you'd not just get your view obstructed in rapid fire.
