One anon is thinking of starting a tribes server, and another anon is thinking of having some noob training sessions for how2play.

Can we get a head count of people that would actually play and what day/times would be good for them? I'm thinking Friday night.

We only got three people in the Quake thread, maybe this will get some more attention.

>(tfw you still have your config setup from 10+ years ago)
I know that feel.

I was just going to set up 1.11, since I also forgot about 1.4. I'll go ahead and set that up instead.
I'm putting together the client myself, that way it has the Master Servers, the Tribal War IRC and most video/network settings already set up for everyone.
I'll make a self-installing .rar archive when I'm done and host it on my home server so people have access to the client without having to go though Mediafire or something.

If there is any other little addons anyone thinks I should put in, let me know and I will.

Also requesting you find one or all of the ski maps. Some of the training/duel maps supported short skirmishes but I think they were a pain in the ass to setup.

Also some of the mile high maps where it's just some floating bases just to show them off.

I found a 1.4 download that seems to have everything we would want. HD Textures included. It also has a bunch of scripts, but I'm not sure if I want to bother removing them.

>>1730215
I just found out that 1.4, for some reason, doesn't have irc support.

I'm thinking of having two downloads for people. A 1.11 download, for stuff like IRC support and not so filled with random junk people won't use. Then the 1.4, which has the HD Textures and addons.

I'd use the IRC. I'd also make the 1.11 version use the IRC by default.
So if you felt like putting one up, I'd use it.

I have the 1.4 client ready to go. I just need to set up 1.11 now and make separate installers for them.
I also need to set up the server itself.

When the installers and server is done, I'll let you all know. Should be before I go to bed. Things are poping up and I won't be able to continue working on it as fast as I am. Life stuff sux.

I'm aware that 1.11 needs the Vista patch to work. I didn't use the Tribes Client myself enough to know how buggy it is.

Alright. I kinda want to remake OP, but I don't wish to spam the board.
Regardless, I 'think' I'm done.
You can find the Tribes Clients here: http://remeer.ddns.net/SharedFiles/

If you have a pre-2009 PC, I suggest you download 1.11. Otherwise, download 1.4.
1.11 is pretty stable and reliable. However, it simply wasn't made for our supercomputers today(Which, one would think is a good thing, but nope). You might find 1.11 is more buggy for you. Just experiment with the options and versions.
1.4 is a 'leaked beta', more or less. So it has quite afew bugs. Most of which are fixed by scripts and plugins that I have installed in there for you already. One annoying little bug I couldn't find help for however, was weapon models sometimes not animating.
Pic related shows the differences, although it doesn't do the HD pack it's justice. I'm horrible with screenshots, so...yeah.

More next post.

Other information actually related to the server and game;
Right now the server only has the 'typical' maps. If you want more added, find and link them to me yourself, as I have no refined taste on'good' alternative maps.
If you're new to Tribes, figure out your bindings. If they seem like way too much, play the game a little bit so you can get the idea of the context behind all the bindings. But regardless of what you do, figure out those bindings eventually. All the little extra keys can be really useful at times.
If you find any bugs, let me know. I will fix them up and 'rebuild' the packs with the fixes. This also applies to super ugly textures. I merged alot of textures myself, so if some of them look way out of place, let me know.
My '/vr/ Base' server should be listed in the Master Server list. If you can't see it yourself, single click any existing server(highlight it) and hit Insert on the keyboard. Make the name whatever you want, but make the IP "Remeer.ddns.net:28001". If it still doesn't work, check back later. My computer or network probably died.
If you have any suggestions on what to add to the server, feel free to ask. I know my way around Tribes Modding pretty well, though abit rusty.
I acknowledge that respect is earned, not given. So I won't ask for your respect. I will however, ask you refrain from acting like a dick on my server. I also feel I do have a good 'feel' for the line between 'Playfully being an ass' and 'being an ass'.

Also, play fair. Please don't use no-fog or a little cheat application that lets you see players though walls. If you're found, I will temp/perm ban you. No exceptions at all.
In 1.4, if you don't like where the GUI is setting, I added a script to allow you to mod the GUI yourself in-game. Though I warn you, it's buggy as fuck. Open the console (` or ~ key), type in "guiEditor();" and hit enter. I have not found a way to edit the editor safely, so be sure not to try it in the middle of a active game.
I'm currently working on some custom content for the packs(New map types. Not just new maps, for example). Any suggestions? Let me know. Though I'm doing this mostly for my own entertainment. So I can't promise I'll keep modding it forever. I will be adding bots as a votable options soon.
In any case, I hope people actually get a use out of this.

From what I can tell, if you simply exit the game via it's top-right exit button, it'll save the UI so you can come back.
Also, if you fucked up your UI too bad, all you need to do to reset it is go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Tribes\Tribes1.4\Config and delete the play.gui.cs file.

Tribes1 invented Skiing. No joke.
I haven't played Ascend, but I assume they casualized it abit. That said, in some maps and areas, if you learn to Ski well, you can go pretty fast. It requires a bit of skill and learning to do though. Skiing was invented moreso as a 'effect' or 'glitch' of the Engine that just caught onto the core gameplay.
If you get enough people playing, it can get pretty intense. In peak hours (Maybe ~3 hours from now) the BR Anni server should be kinda filled up. Anni is pretty broken(As it's a server mod- No, you won't have to download anything), but it's still trilling to play it now and then, although I prefer base.
I'm only suggesting it because it seems to be one of the only things the few people on it play anymore, so you can get the rush of more people.

Tribes has changed alot over the series. But Tribes1 can give you one hell of a rush if you can get some people to play. You can go fast, but it's a acquired skill.
And if you can't get skiing down, you can ride jets to get around to tide you over, or hitch a rice on a friendly APC.

>> No.1731932

>>1731909
I should've also said there is no real speed limit. In some mods and glitches, I've gained enough speed to fly past the entire 'map'(Border to border) within milliseconds. So if you can get Skiing down, you can keep accelerating to pretty fast speeds. You can also use explosions for a extra kick to your skiing, if you're willing to risk your health.

They are vaguely similar. Vengeance had little in common with it. Ascend is pretty close, but aiming is off and the speed limits are annoying (not that you can't get past them on sone naps, but they implemented a drag mechanic that nerfs chasing and capping, but chasing more so. Some maps you can grab at 550 and there is literally nothing you can do about it on defense except snipe him. /end ascend rant)

So similar but better, and the maps are much, much bigger. If you've never played t1 or t2 you won't believe how big they are. Like 4 sq km of play area on a small map and it goes way up from there.

Out of curiosity, does it make use of 'multi-layered' maps?

A long time ago when I played Tribes more, I went into Map Making and I found out you can spawn more than one terrain of the same type, as in, if it uses DesertDML, it can't use a LushDML map. But you can spawn as many diverse DesertDML terrains as you want.

I modded my Modx server to have a day/night/weather system, but I also implemented Layers onto the Modx-Desert.
If you know of Modx at all, it's like the Modx-Desert 'hell' terrain.

Sadly, the farther away you get from the ~0y axis, the 'weirder' objects become (As in, your gun shaking alot for example). But you can easily add ~10 (~5 in both y axis) layers of stuff. But that is with Flight. If RPGMod doesn't allow flight, you could add 'way' more than that.

I'm curious is all, I've tried RPGMod, not my thing. But I'm wondering if anyone else used a concept I thought of myself.

>> No.1732820

>>1732619
Some servers use multiple terrains. The main server does that.

Tribes RPG has weather too, including day/night, a sun that moves across the sky, rain, snow, hail, lightning, snowstorms (with slippery ice).

RPG mod typically allows flight only if the player owns and is able to use an item that enables it.

It is also worth noting that RPG mod is (I think) the only mod that still has active development.

>> No.1732838

>>1732820
>active development.
Now that, above everything else, is impressive.
I tried to make a planet or sky object move across the sky, but from what I remember, no matter how much I manipulated the object, it simply wouldn't move. So I went with just adding a sun in one spot during the day and adding stars during the night. Pretty annoying.
I wouldn't mind maybe getting into it someday, but for now, I have a bunch of other things I want to play/do beforehand.

>> No.1732848

>>1732838
I am only aware of one RPG server that does the sun tricks. The main one. It works by deleting and recreating the sun at the new position each tick. Interior lighting gets messed up if it isn't done just right.

It uses real time.

>> No.1732882

>>1732848
Mhm. I had the concept of the sun trick down. That's how my skycolor changed depending on the time of day, by deleting and making a new sky object every * amount of ticks. In retrospect, I could have done my time setup alot better, but still.
Regardless, no matter how I changed the coords of the sun/planet objects, it would always stay in the same spot. Dunno, it was years ago, I could've just been derping something obvious.
Another trick that I've tried to do that bothered me, was when I was trying to add new objects to ModX. I wanted to make a tracer turret that would shoot out different colored lasers each time. For one reason or another I couldn't get it to work.
I might go in and try to mod/host Modx again someday, just for old times sake.

Modding Tribes was so fun. It did the serverside-clientside dance perfectly. I personally would've preferred if you were able to download more stuff from servers optionally, such as custom map types and stuff on the fly. Oh well though.

In any case, just yabbering now. Do you regular any RPG Servers? If so, for how long? Depending on how long you think it'll hold your attention still, I wouldn't mind having someone to play with if I ever tried to get into it again in the future.

Jump repeatedly rather than holding space.

You can get scripts that automate it so you only have to hold space. Some Tribes packs such as the RPG pack come with it built in (but not always enabled by default).

>> No.1736610

>>1736551
They probably all use scripts. You can do just fine without, but most of the scripts do it better than any human can. The idea is to jump as soon as you hit the ground, so you don't drag, and the jump pushes you forward and up. Scripts provide the best timing for this by constantly jumping.

The "Happy Jump" ski script alters the protocol so the client doesn't send a "I have stopped jumping" signal until you release the key. Makes it the most efficient.

If you guys want to join, make sure you have an updated client: http://pastebay.net/1458879

Server Name - /vr/ Base

Apparently some people are having trouble seeing the server on the master, but there's a quick fix for it, though you should come in IRC for it.

IRC - #vrtribes on Quakenet. If you dont want to use a desktop client, you can always use the qwebirc: http://webchat.quakenet.org/

>> No.1738274

I highly suggest you download either of the clients I've made specifically for my server (/vr/ base).
It doesn't exactly matter what client you use, but if you have any bugs, I will fix them if they're related to my client directly. I also implemented a few functions into clientside code I plan on using in the future for extra 'fun'.

You can always find the up-to-date installers here:
http://remeer.redirectme.net/SharedFiles/
If, for some reason, no files are listed to download, it is because I found a bug in the client annoying enough to make me want to fix it before I allow more people to download.

As for which client of mine to use;
1.40 if you like updated graphics and newer support(Like zip files, .ogg sounds, etc).
My 1.40 client also has handpicked textures(Which I will fix if the textures are messy somehow), as well as some extra scripts like Happy Ski(Easier skiing).

1.11 if you have a older rig, or if you have some weird 1.40 specific bugs. It's pretty bare, but I add my own stuff to it as well, mostly scripts.

Anyway, yeah. If you can't see my server (/vr/ base) in the Master Server list, download these clients. If you can, don't worry about it. The update I made is only necessary if you can't see it.
Need more help? Go into the irc, as the anon above me said.

Enjoy.

They will both roughly function the same.
