I like the idea of chiptunes, and I like old video game music, but I haven't found many original artists who manage to hold my attention for long. YMCK and Trash80, that's about it offhand. I've seen a couple great live sets from people using LSDJ or the like, but everything is better live.

Chiptunes before hipsters discovered them: Jazzy, funky, elaborate, complex, experimental, avant garde and all around interesting to listen to

Chiptunes after hipsters discovered them: Generic club-music techno adapted to "chip-ish" instrumentation, showing no hint of knowledge of music theory whatsoever

I like it somewhat, but most of them just make bad ripoffs of cheesy genres like happy hardcore. Not many of the artists seem very musically sophisticated. And why do 99% of them just use gameboys/NES chips? Get some fucking SID emulation happening at the very least for gods sake.
But on the other end of the spectrum there's multi-instrumentalists like Disasterpeace who are mind meltingly superb.

Not really.

No talented and educated musician would bother with this crap. It's for people who can't be bothered to produce real music.

I like chiptune when the artist has an idea of melodies and harmonies, random beeps don't satiate me. I want to start making this but kind of put my own spin on it i.e. have the chiptune as an accent for an irl instrument section.

I have nothing but respect for chiptune artists but I personally don't like the music much at all. Retro vidya is probably number 3 hobby after bicycling and DJing (if anyone's curious — Gabber, Uplifting Trance and Makina) so I like it when threads like this pop up here.

Before, I don't know exactly, about ~2010-2012 when electronic music and retro games coincidentally began to explode at the same time a lot of people were inspired by the likes of Renard (some of his aliases to be specific) and Anamanaguchi to make chiptune. I haven't interacted with the chiptune scene /extensively/ but from what I have seen there's a lot of sugoku-kawaii-desu assholes (read as: excessive use of 'cute' :3 xD :D ^_^ emoticons who also get extremely defensive if you critique anything they like, also often in the same circle as SJWs) in the scene at the moment.

There really are some amazing musicians in chiptune but for me it's so outweighed by the shit and shitty attitudes there's just no appeal, personally.

Don't get me started on the current state of the house music scene though. Now that's just plain abhorrent.

Not a fan of Chibitech's work, especially his titling methods, but this is mighty impressive. He managed to squeeze a few guitar strum samples in and uses it to lead the music. I wonder though if such a thing would be feasible in a real NES game.

Another favorite of mine is Extends Levant by HertzDevil. It dropped down my favorites a little thanks to the aforementioned song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gmVGsQbDl8

Another cool one, although it uses VRC7 and Namco 163 as well as 2A03, is this rendition of Scaborough fair.

NES chiptunes are very rare, especially 2A03 only songs.

To me, it's a novelty. It is fun on occasion, but I wouldn't listen to it on a regular basis.

I can understand the appeal of the challenge of making music with a limited piece of hardware. Stripping music to its bare essence takes a lot of work to get right. Pushing old hardware to its limits can be fun too.

I dont know about gameplay, but programming quality was better back when limitations of computer specifications were much more strict.

These days you have games that require 4GB of RAM and run like shit even on $3,000 video cards because HEY WHO NEEDS TO OPTIMIZE WHEN COMPUTERS ARE 4GHZ NOW XD XD

Some of the chiptunes I like (linked here)>>1740859, I like them because of how they are actually rendered with FamiTracker. While it is far from an efficient method of making music for the NES (NES games usually had 32KB for an entire soundtrack, the average FT composition is several hundred KBs), the music can still run on Nintendo hardware. The first two songs are even more impressive because they use the stock 2A03, and don't delve into VRC6 wankery like most others. The final song is a song that uses VRC7 and Namco 163 at an attempt of synthesizing speech.

I strongly disagree. I love the sounds produced by the sound chips from the NES, Genesis, and SNES. There's a distinct timbre to each of these sound chips that cannot be produced by any other instrument. Therefore, whether you prefer, for example, the timbre of the Genesis sound chip to the timbre of a clarinet is completely up to the personal preference of the listener. And I do believe that these sound chips can be used in conjunction with "real" instruments to produce something special.
