Fuck no.

That being said, the game did have some interesting ideas. It just had less than stellar execution. Much less than stellar execution.

I owned both Glover and Quest 64 as a kid and while people call them extremely horrible and bad etc, they're really not.

They're just boring, extremely, extremely boring, it was the first time I've ever played a game and gone 'wow I think they didn't finish this, you can do that? sell a game you haven't finished?'.

Glitching through walls is easy to do in quest 64 but it doesn't happen with game breaking frequency most of the time you spend playing won't be spent in frustration but boredom and confusion over why the hell you decided to waste your time turning this damn thing back on.

>> No.1722484

is it really that bad?

>> No.1722532

Rented this game as a kid, didn't have any idea what to do in combat and none of my moves seemed to do anything. Also didn't know what I was supposed to be doing outside of combat.

I always thought there was some sort of secret to the game that was keeping me from accessing the real adventure. A gameplay feature I was overlooking, or a glitch I accidently triggered to break the game.

But now, video reviews have shown me the game never gets better and there isn't any trick to making the game fun. It just tried to make kids into buying instead of renting. without actually making it worth the timesync.

I don't watch/listen to reviews, ecause I like going into a game/movie/book/whatever with my own fresh perspective. That's hard to do nowadys with everyone-and-thei-mother proclaiming to hae an asolute definitive judgement on everything. That said, reviews might have saved me a lot of hard-earned lawn-cutting & leaf-raking money ack in the day. Formulate your own opinion if you aren't actually buying the game or if you are just collecting. That said:

Quest 64 is a shit. Nintendo made some wonderful strides in 3D platforming and action, but nearly ALL of their third-party RPG devs jumped ship when the 64 was announced because of their draconian licensing practices and their awful devkit. Not to mention the console limitations. I liked Aidyn Chronicles - The First Mage, but that was too little, too late.

Get into your first were-hare battle and cast a lvl 1 rock.
If that spell conjuring an actual boulder with hitbox, that requires you to position yourself correctly and may hit several enemies/miss completly if you fucked up, followed by being able to dodge the hare's wind cutter by running, doesnt sound amazing to you, then drop the game.

The only thing this game has going for it is the combat system, which gave me countless hours of fun with rolling boulders, cyclones, walking water and magma balls.
Half of the fun is unlocking spells, the other half casting them. The game has an insanely shitty story, shitty "dungeons", no puzzles, no equipment, no currency... pretty much everything you would expect a RPG to have.

My first RPG was fucking chrono trigger and I still found quest 64 to be fun enough to sink hundreds of hours into.

Just re-emphasising that the RPG genre was not a focus for Nintendo ack then. The controller was meant for first-person and third-person platformers and action/FPS. /vr/ has had this discussion before, but I personally couldn't even hold the controller correctly because of big hands.

Oh piss off with this crap, the N64 controller has a good D-pad and its position is very comfortable when in use. Nintendo wasn't trying to force 3D at all with it. In fact it's just the opposite; they didn't want to force developers into using analog because so they gave them separate and equal options.

>>1726771
Lots of games used the D-Pad, I can name several offhand, among them games like Mischief Makers and Kirby 64.

Many games that focused on using the analog stick also used the D-Pad for inputting miscellaneous commands (Inventory Management, Zoom Toggle, Ammo swap, turret rotation, etc for examples) that the players were expected to use less-often than the primary controls of the game, such as moving, looking, jumping, running, shooting...so not only was it a d-pad, but it could also be used as another set of buttons.

It was the very first RPG I ever played, and it actually does a good job of being a "My first RPG" sort of game.

Really what makes the game so great for me is the world design, how grand and big the world felt when you stepped out of the first town. What I remember most about the game to this day is the atmosphere over everything else really.
>That tension when exploring the very first forest and the fear that was built up when you were about to fight the first boss.

It also had a lot of interesting unexplained elements that I miss from modern games. Like what the fuck was up with the tunnel made of roots and plants and shit with a huge plant stalk acting as a bridge near the end of that cave dungeon?

I don't get why people bash on the design and make jokes about needing 3 hands to hold it properly. IMO the whole thing with having multiple ways to hold it is pretty ingenious. These days you just have to twist your thumbs around uncomfortably in order to switch between the D-pad or thumbstick.
>People actually tried to hold the N64 controller like pic-related

From what i read the developers didn't get to properly finish the game which is why things like >>1726986 happened along with ghost tier NPC interaction as well as no equipment/shops. If it had those things it would've been a really nice game, but as it is it's only okay at best with it's interesting combat system.

I keep saying this in these threads, but for the gbc they actually included traditional jrpg style cutscenes and fetch quests. I actually whined about the lack of them as a child but now I appreciate the game more for it.

Resource management really is a total mess in this game though, every item besides health recovering bread is useless and limited.

>> No.1727994

>>1727964
>every item besides health recovering bread is useless and limited

Wings = free fast travel
Any mana pot = recover mp inside dungeons without risking random encounters, can be converted in hp if you have at least 14 water crystals
Giant shoes = doubles your movement area, so you can prevent bosses from using melee atks and have more time to react against ranged spells
Bell = disable all enemies for like 5 turns, insanely good to get out of tough fights with free exp (4 green dragons normally meant you would die if you couldnt flee on turn 1)

Nah, only silence flutes and def amulets are shit. You can farm any kind of item if you want to, almost all mobs can drop one type of item and its like 25% chance to get something after a battle.

git gud and waste your time, fegget

WWF No Mercy. D-pad controls the wrestler, A and B are used for attacking, C-pad used for a few other things like running and that, and the control stick is flicked to taunt and activate your special ability.

If I recall right one of the wind spells already did that. Took you back to the dungeon entrance or something. By the end of the game I had one of each color.

It was a water spell, and yes it functioned like an escape rope.
There was one wing of each color, you would get one from every city inn for free.
Considering you can also restock one kind of consumable in each city (50 hp bread in the first one, 10 mp spirit in the second, etc) the wings are not useless...

The wings would take you right outside the wing shop in the city you got that color from. If you were smart you would go right back inside and grab another set before setting off. The wings were insanely useful as a method of quicktravel to any city you've been to, though really the game was linear enough that you never NEEDED to return to any city you previously went to, save for the water city.

>> No.1728034

On my first playthrough I leveled everything except water. Try playing this shit with no healing magic.
I ended up using that vampirism fire spell that converted 1/4 of the staff damage into hp, then proceeded to melee weak enemies to death with raised defence and evasion.

If they added a real story, some NPCs, a money system, and jumping, then it would be a very good rpg. As it stands I think it was very unfinished.

>> No.1730263

>>1716930
This game is boring, bad, and unfinished. Empty world, no story, no money/items. Level water until you can heal, then just get earth spells to attack. Then quit playing because it sucks and move on with your life.

They were even too lazy to give it a name. "Quest" is just a nondescript as the rest of the game, so I guess it's actually kind of fitting. Can you imagine if anybody else named games like this today? "Drive U" "Shoot One" "Open-world 360" etc. Indefensible trash.

There is a story, something about his dad being kidnapped, a book and 4 elemental orbs being the mcguffing that can control the world and a judgement day approaching, also the girl that gives you hints at the inn is actually an undercover witch or some shit working against you.
In japan this game was known as Eltale Monsters, I think eltale refers to the book.

The hidden pyramid in dindom dries was pretty cool though and had decent music. the only part in the game I liked had the giant vine or tree root or w/ever in cull hazard.

Fuck though the dungeons were horrific, walk 50 miles through each one to get to the end.
