Beta game time? Beta game time.

Time to talk about beta elements in retro games

I have an intricate interest in Zelda 64's development. It's both depressing and amazing to see the various changes.

This isn't /v/ but Mario is top husbando.

You can go on a field day talking about Ocarina of Time's development. Nearly 20 years later and there's still a lot to discover

A lot of last minute changes are what made it so good.

That looked SO MUCH better than the one we got. Much more colorful with a more interesting and less cliché and bland art direction.

Also, the feeling "been there, done that already" RE0 gives, as well as the controls being a stepped backwards (compared to REmake), would have been accepted a lot more had it been released on N64, that is to say much before.

Interceptor Entertainment bought (what was left of) 3DRealms.

They got access to backups of all the games by 3DRealms, including every-day backup saves from very early alpha and beta versions of games.

They decided to send the Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior related stuff to 2 of the devs of EDuke32 who have been going through it lately.

They've showed a little of what they found so far, but not much. However, we'll get to know everything little by little starting next month with the launch of the new 3DRealms website. Interceptor CEO said he planned to release stuff 'as is' as well as in a 'playable state".

Some interesting stuff :

some random things :
- traces of the expander of very old versions of the map "It's Impossible!" (which both are from the Atomic Edition, released AFTER the original duke3D) were found in builds from 1994. Which means that the Atomic Edition episode is most likely made of TONS of scrapped content.

you've said that before and it's no less wrong now than it was then. it looks like basically the same game except everything looks shitty and low res. re0 was a really pretty, moody game like the remake

>> No.1712570

>>1712159
RE0 sucked anyway. It was a retarded version of Lost Vikings.

>> No.1712575

RE0 was full brown&grey with a bit of red here and there.

imo the brown&grey worked well in REmake, but not in 0. It's like it was trying really hard to be like REmake even though it wasn't supposed to to begin with.

Contrary to the beta which looks as colourful as RE2&3

I've always loved how Super Mario 64's beta looked. I really love / prefer the color scheme used in it. The colors are geared toward subtle blueish greens and pinkish reds more-so than the really saturated colors that we ended up getting.

Also, I think Thwomp's Fortress, about 5:45 into the video, is a good representation of the different looking visuals.

About 45 seconds into the video.

The various betas for Tomb Raiders on the PS1 are always interesting to look at.

wasn't one of the early versions going to be a dragon view style first person exploration+side view combat?

Some guy was trying to get the b-roll footage given to various retailers for a pretty large sum of money. Probably doesn't help that the only place he brought it up was in some YouTube comments and an obscure forum.

It's a screenshot of a early prototype of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater that has Bruce Willis's character from Apocalypse as a statue in the downtown level.
