Thy Flesh Consumed just has a couple of real challenging levels. The rest is relatively easy due to the enemy types Doom 1 offers.

Here's a more feature-complete idea of what they will do.

Dakkamons is getting another feature: cvar called dakkamons_monstername_fuckyou, and this will be the revenant's fuckyou mode. Each monster will have a separate, individually toggleable fuckyou mode that will act as a mutator on top of its behavior - so its getrekt or normal behavior will be augmented, not replaced, by it. I got the idea from giving the lost souls their own separate cvar called "skullsexplode", which makes them rocketsplosion on impact with something.

So hey, /vr/. I hang around here a lot. THE single most common question I see posted here is, "I just installed Doom for the first time, what's the best enhancement mod to make everything pretty while keeping vanilla gameplay?"

Now, beyond a few hard and fast rules (very few of us like high-res textures and 4x sprites with a shitty filter on top) there seems to be a lot of disagreement. The most common replies seem to be Smooth Doom, Polished Skull, etc.

Why don't we just...make our own? I'm talented with DECORATE and can at least edit graphics (don't tell me to make anything from scratch though) and I have an eye for details.

What would your enhancement mod be like? My first thing would be Smooth Doom but removing some of the "features" of it or at least making them optional (some of the alternate deaths are shitty for example) and starting over on the weapons.

What's your ideas?

There are lots of cvars that allow you to tweak your power and survivability. You can increase or decrease monster health from its base, you can change the value of health each of the dropped souls give, how long they last, how many drop, the SPREAD of how many souls drop, and the max they can give you. You can enable and disable individually each monsters' "FUCKYOU" mode, and getrekt is a difficulty mode that I designed specifically for ijon (probably) because everyone else seems satisfied with vanilla dakkamons.

The vanilla game is actually quite fun and I feel I've balanced it well. What I am working on are the intentionally imbalanced "you gonna die" features.

Once I get some more shit done I want to make some 'presets' that you can input. Right now you can use dakkamons_allmonsters_fuckyou -1 and 1 to unset and set every monster's fuckyou modifier. Keep in mind that 'fuckyou' and 'getrekt', for the most part, are only detected by monsters on spawn. Now I know, you're like, "No shit," but hear me out, it's more complex than you realize. The player can only hold at any given point, 100 shells maximum--if they found a backpack, if not then it's only 50. The SSG takes two shells per shot; this means that without finding any new ammo you can only shoot 50 times, whereas if you use the regular shotgun you can get twice that. The average player is unlikely to think about this often though, and is going to run around with the SSG thinking they have 100 shots to play with, and will probably use it on everything they see. If you're casually running around, you're not going to stop and think about how much ammo you're actually wasting on these Zombiemen, you're just going to blast them and move on, except Zombiemen don't replenish your shells at all. It's tricky.

Usually if my shells dip below 25 (if I don't have a backpack) or 50 (if I do) I'll switch to the regular shotgun until I max out my ammo again. This avoids me running out of shells as often as I used to.

Okay so I'm playing through Doom 2 for the first time and Tricks and Traps has defeated me. I have the BFG, shitloads of Plasma Rifle Ammo, nearly sixty rockets and Health and Shield just under maximum and nothing can defeat the fucking hordes of Hell Knights in that one room. And if I ever DO get them all killed by cheesing the through the doorway I have to contend with the goddamn Cyberdemon inside and making a run for the Health sphere is suicide.

Am I doing it wrong? I feel like there has to be a Secret or a gimmick in the level for killing these guys, there's no way they intended you to just pour all of your ammo into a twenty foot space and hope for the best.

The short of the matter is that the room is, as per the map name, a trick.
Open the door, come in, let the Cyberdemon shoot at the barons and provoke a ton of infighting.

Then just fuck off to another section of the map and do whatever. After a while either the Cyber will die or the barons will be finished. After you're done fucking off, come back and mop up everything with the BFG.

There's nothing in the Assemblies pasta about this Plasma Redirection Cannon, is it new? Has anyone else fooled around with it? A few maps only possess real challenge, once you know the triggers and traps before it's easy. If you wanna pass somewhere safely savescumming is easy.

So today I've been working on all kinds of stuff, like fixing up the stat randomizer so that it actually works and re-working how monster level/progression is handled. After I was done I decided to generate an OBLIGE mapset and go to town to test all the new changes. Welcome to MAP29, where I met this guy, who immediately wrecked my shit ten-fold and one-shotted me instantly for about 3800 damage.

Will fix drops or any other serious bugs but I guess I am done with it. Haven't tested this throughly so let me know what's broken.

DoomRL Chests adds Chests to the game! What rougelike is complete without chests? None. So I took it upon myself to add chests.
There is quite a selection of chests which replace pickups on the map. Most chests drop what they replace. Mostly.
New items;
-Spent Ammo: From half dead batteries to magazines with 3 bullets.
-Fast/Good Food: Heals up to 50/100
-Armor Bits/Tools: Repair armor up to 25/75
-Junk: Makes you wonder why do they even exist

Chests!
Their sizes and contents vary, shoddier the chest looks, worse will be the drops. You have to approach chests and use them.
Health Bonus became a set of urns which need breaking, armor bonus are more likely to appear but could be a mod chest instead.

All large ammo pickups have a chance to be replaced with chests, with the rocket chest being huegest so it can provide some cover as well.
These chests will either drop large ammo (x1.5) or the ammo they replaced with something extra (weapon/recipe).

All guns (except chainsaw, shotgun and chaingun) replaced with weapon chests, which have a wider variety and drop some ammo to go with the gun.
So don't be shocked when some monsters from monsters addon start dropping chests.

All armor pickups replaced with Armor chests, both green and blue armor drops got a bump up in rarity. Chests will drop both armor and boots.

All powerups (except Blur and Backpack, which are already chests) come in a rather spiffy UAC crate now, drops rare stuff on top of powerup it replaces.

Dakka is a mod for zandronum that makes all the guns more shootier.

Dakkamons is an addon to dakka that makes all the monsters more powerfullyer.

getrekt is a mode that makes the monsters unreasonably unfair to fight against
fuckyou is a mode each individual monster has that modifies their abilities to make them even crazier.

Dakkamons has a bevy of cvars that enables you to tweak the amount of health you gain from killing monsters, and the monsters' hp itself (you can set it so every monster starts with 1 hp), to offset the increased difficulty of getrekt and fuckyou modes.

Modern games: lots of effort to enslave an existing engine or create a whole new engine, create all new content, create all new concepts, new story, market the shit, do things that justify the expenses of producing the thing in the first place.

Doom/Quake/Whatever mods: dudes who take a game which the manpower is already spent on and just improve on it.

So I guess we can look at it like:

modern game: the time it takes to produce it and the staff involved in the development.
mod : the time it takes to produce the base game + the time it takes to produce the mod. The original development team + the years of community resources and knowledge. Constantly improving, patching as a hobby, etc. etc..

I think the modding scene of video games in general isn't given enough credit. It really is logically the best place to go for quality gameplay. By its very nature, it will produce games that are more engaging and entertaining and just FUN than the latest commercial whatevers.

So I decided that two stats for monsters wasn't enough, and I'm in the process of re-writing monster stats to use the same set of stats as the players do. That means they'll be more randomized, and MUCH more deadly. A max level Shadow enemy by default has about 10x damage, 90% damage resistance, 8x health, the ability to increase it's own stats, massive health regen, super ninja speed, etc.

If you kill the fucker though, they'll turn into lootsplosion central and give you all kinds of good stuff.

Also, in general, enemies with auras will be much rarer in the beginning, as whether an enemy has an aura or not is determined by randomization which heavily takes into account their Energy stat.

I look at what became of Forever and at Duke as a character, and think they got the theme all wrong, they kept trying to update it, and the game often makes jabs at Duke being a relic, giving the impression that its supposed to be "see, duke can keep up, he's still got it" but this is terrible, aside from everything else it implies that Duke is the one needing to keep up with the world, Classic Duke is timeless, he doesn't need ti keep up, the world needs to keep up with him, the game should have pitteted him initially against modern gaming style enemies but with Duke using all his classic shooter methowds and winning, then the enemies get smarter and better as the game would go on

Guys, I'm a casual.

I love the way weapons feel in Doom, and shooting enemies is satisfying. But I don't like the maze gameplay of Doom. I'm too impatient, and the payoff doesn't seem that great - I get to go to another level and get lost on that one instead, or skip ahead a few levels.

Even with a map and a source port, I'd rather not have to deal with all these fucking mazes.

Maybe if the map had a casual-approved objective marker, like all the modern FPSs that you probably hate?
