Stopped into the victor, ny good will yesterday and saw a boxed master system for US$399.99

I laughed so hard the entire store was looking at me.

I had to ask if it was complete, in between chuckles, the bitch replied
>it's just the game

it is by far the shittiest thrift shop in my area, perhaps because victor is upper class? they had smb/duck hunt for 9.99, gb tetris for 9.99, everything was horrible..

the only good thing i've ever gotten out of it was a game boy color, purple, for 8 bucks but it was scratched up and missing the battery cover

How are your local thrift stores?

Goodwill stores in Ohio and PA dump anything remotely valuable to Goodwill's online auction warehouse, where they charge for shipping (which is a given), but also have a separate handling charge, which is what it cost them to ship it from their stores to the warehouse. All for donated merchandise.

I haven't seen anything good for a LONG time in a thrift store. In western Ohio in the middle of nowhere, a couple years ago, I found Threads of Fate for like $9 at a Goodwill, in a stack of Spice Girls CDs, and about ten years ago, a complete NES, sans box, with power pad and gray zapper, for $10.

Where state are these Goodwills that charge $399 for an SMS and $149 for just the 5200 console located in?!

I live in Indianapolis, and I got Castlevania I & III for $2 each a few years back. The lady at the register didn't even know what console they were for, LOL. I told her they were for the NES, and a co-worker behind her said to her, "It's Castlevania, DUH!". I also got a 1982 Sony Trinitron, complete with original remote and documentation, for $8.

But that's nothing compared to what I scored a few years before that: a 6-switch Atari 2600, complete with AC Adapter, RF switch (bad), 3 joysticks, 2 pairs of paddles, 2 keyboard controllers, 10 games, and Tele-Games storage bin.... all of that for $5. Of course, I had to replace the RF switch and blow into the cartridge slot before I could get it working again, but STILL.

Lately the goodwills here haven't been as good though, and their prices have gone up (though they're still MUCH cheaper than the OP's goodwills). But the best goodwill I've been to is the one in Terre Haute, IN. I once found a fully-functional Tandy TRS-80 Model 4P, complete with floppies and documentation, for $25 there.

Poor marketing by Tonka toys didn't help any. Sega originally sold the U.S. SMS rights to Tonka, believing that the toy distributor would allow the SMS to be better circulated, but Tonka's marketing department passed over popular European titles (such as Psycho Fox) and instead released flops like Cloud Master. My local goodwill stores don't ship the good stuff away, but that's the only good thing about them. Good stuff rarely comes in, and when it does it has a 50% chance of getting a ridiculous price (depending on the manager on duty). I've seen Ocarina of Time go for 2 and decent GBA cames go for 3 while used copies of WoW, brain-training DS "games", and Madden '95 rot in the glass case with $5-10 price tags.

Unfortunately, in addition to those issues, I now have confirmed I've got a rival. There's some guy who always wears rubber gloves, a baseball cap, dark glasses, and a surgical mask who shows up only looking for video games. The mental image you have of "reseller scum", it's that guy. Every time I see him he's rifling through every piece of vidya, looking up the price of every last item on his phone.

they probably figured that maybe they'd get lucky and someone with more money than sense would want that master system. $400 would be a decent price if it was brand-new, but it's about 4x too much for used, even if it was complete.

i do highly encourage folks to check out the master system's library if you haven't already. some gems just from my own collection:

Aladdin (EU)
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Cloud Master (yeah, I liked it)
Fantasy Zone
Fantasy Zone II
Golden Axe Warrior (Zelda clone)
Golvellius - Valley of Doom
Master of Darkness (EU) (Castlevania clone)
The Ninja
Phantasy Star
Psycho Fox
SpellCaster
Taz-Mania (EU)
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap
Zillion
Zillion II: The Tri Formation

a warning to anyone thinking about collecting for the SMS... games are not region-locked. EU games (and I believe Brazilian too) will play just fine in a US system, but the speed will sometimes be off by ~17%. not a huge deal. this makes the potential library much larger and far more expensive. ;)

Even when I had unlimited free time and nigh-infinite funds, there was fuck all. This was in the days before the drooling idiot masses became aware of the web. You know well that now that the public is aware of "nerd culture" and its potential for profit due to hipsters running on mommy-and-daddy-money with no concern for the amount of effort required by the average person to earn a dollar, any venue that carries legacy technology will be turned upside down and inside out in order to wring every cent out of it, whether the companies themselves do it, or their mealy-mouthed patrons who reek of ammonia.

tl;dr
Pickings weren't that good thirteen years ago, and they're worse now because people with no concern for the cost of scouring sales and stores for loot are raking up everything and dumping it on idiots with more dollars than sense.

I always have more luck with locally owned consignment shops than I do with any of the more corporate thrift stores.
I've never found shit at Goodwill aside from some common PSX titles. Salvation Army usually has only the shittiest games that no one else would take. Christian Mission did manage to have Mike Tyson's Punchout in box once--but the box had extensive water damage and I ended up tossing it. Lady at the counter though it was some form of VHS tape...

But then, sometime last year, a lady and her husband opened a thrift store near the university that is such a gamble on what you'll find. I did manage to pick up an X-Box for $5, a Dreamcast for $5, and a GBC for $5. No connections, but no real problems there. But I believe the store is done like a consignment shop; where different slots of the store are rented out to people selling things and the owners get a cut of the profits. Which would explain why they want 100+ for a DS Lite with a bunch of shitty Disney games.

There's also a pawn shop here that manages to have good things every now and again. It's not as reliable as hunting everywhere, but the deals are nice.

My large-city area is just overflowing with resellers these days. I use to go out on a daily route (10-15 stops) to find games, and over the years I found some fair deals - but not that often any more.

I know its mostly resellers, because a little while back I came across Power Stone 1 and 2 and Digimon World for $3 each. Guy came by and was telling me I could get them cheaper online (lol) and then asked me if I would visit his eBay store.

There's another "bro gamer" whom started doing a video blog, like Game Chasers, except very crudely done and very "holier than thou" attitudes - and instead of collecting and selling dupes, sells them at a local flea market for higher than feebay prices.

One of my favorite finds was a leather Gameboy Advance case for sale for $3.43. It was wrapped in plastic, but I'm always picking these things up and it was pretty heavy. Went to check out with a few things ( I also collect retro board games), the sales assiciate missed a "3" before hitting cash, and I ended up getting the whole thing for 34 cents. I told her about the mistake (I'm an honestfag, sue me), she winked and told me not to worry about it.
When I got to the car I ripped open the plastic to find a Gameboy Advance, Gameboy SP, and 30 GB/GBA games ranging from Pokemon to Final Fantasy Tactics.

My rarest find, and one of my biggest regrets of not being able to buy, was at a Salvation Army. Don't go there often because they run everything off of feebay prices. Anyway, they had a Vectrex with five games (and overlays) for 299.99. I tried to buy it on the spot but the sales associate said the system had already been sold. Some time later I found the same system for sale in a mom and pop retro store for 600 bucks.

I can also confirm that my GoodWill (both of them) sells their stuff on the GW auction site. I don't even bother checking them out unless I'm in the area.

>> No.1708279

One more thing, I got to know several people who run one of the smaller goodwills, and the stuff that doesn't hit the internet auctions or the shelves goes to the dumpster. I scored a working 3DO on its way to the trash this way.

Kansasfag here

Best goodwills are in derby, and maize. Avoid the one near 235 exit on central. They overprice goods(but mark games at $3.99). The straw that broke the camels back was they were selling a pink gba SP for $99. But I normally don't go to goodwill for games anymore. I don't agree with what they are doing with the auction site.

I go to almost every goodwill on thursdays. I might start changing my tactics to sundays and mondays because of yard sale season. I do find some good electronics at good prices. I have an almost entire sony stereo system. Ive also bought alot of CRTs from them, Records and vhs's too. I mainly go out of town for better game scores, like say Oklahoma or kansas city. The thrift store near my place is a spitting image of the ebay store from the 40 Year Old virgin.

Anything remotely considered valuable is locked up in an auction case.

There isn't that much vidya there nowadays, but when there is, it's priced like pic related...

Is there anywhere on the console that lists the Voltage/Current input? Usually they'll have that information on a sticker on the bottom or near the DC-in port.

It'll look something like "10VDC/850mA"
The values are just for reference.

You'll probably be able to use a generic power supply/adapter as long as the voltage/current ratings match. The only reason I couldn't see this working is if it had a proprietary power connector or something stupid like that.

Eight days late but holy shit, a victorbro? It seems like the Good Wills around here never have anything, but if they do it's nothing special. Not retro, but the best I got was Animal Crossing with the original memory card for four bucks.

Like five years ago, I scored a boxed Master System on ebay with eight games, two controllers, light gun, 3D glasses, and little arcade stick for twenty dollars. Looking around Game Crazes and seeing Master Systems go for fifty on their own boggles my mind how lucky I am.

Holy shit, all these western NYbros and Victorbros? Macedon here, graduated from Victor though. Likely won't happen, but a meet up would be fucking cool.

By the way, what do you guys think of Game Craze? I've only been to two in Rochester once each, but I go to the one at Eastview Mall fairly often. I used to go to the one in Canandaigua a lot as a kid, but I'm pretty sure it's a front for drugs or some shit. The dudes who work there nowadays don't strike me as gamers at all and they put the price stickers on the on the paper cover sleeves beneath the plastic. It's disgusting. Thanks for the heads up on Heckle and Jeckle, I shall steer clear.

I haven't been to the Avon flea market since last summer, I ought to make a trip there again sometime.

Anyone been to the International Center for the History of Electronic Games at the Strong Museum? I highly, highly recommend it especially if you haven't been to an arcade in years like me. Such a blast.

If your name is Jake I'm going to shit my pants.

I'm currently in the process of buying a house in Fairport, off of 31 by Turk Hill. Maybe I'll try to put together some vidja playing once I'm settled in. I'm in a shitty small apartment in the ghetto of the city now, wouldn't work there.

I always thought Game Craze was over priced, I don't think I ever bought anything there, just browsed, pic related.

Does anyone remember Game CrazY in Batavia? That place was the shit when I was in high school a decade ago.

I was at the Museum of Play two weeks ago with my wife and 9mo old, he didn't care but I loved the arcade and all the vidja history!

My name is... you ready for this?

......

......

Ben.

Oh well!

You sound a bit older than I am, so we most likely don't know each other.

Was Game CrazY in a mall? I thiiink I've maybe been to it only once. Never went to it enough for it to leave an impression on me unfortunately.

If you're moving near 31, do you by chance remember Video Game Monster? It was only there for about five years maybe before it went out of business. It was generally a little high on prices, but I always left with a few good buys. The first time I went there I got like six good SNES games, later found a few Master System games, and when they were liquidating I got a few things for cheap. It's a pawn shop called Mega Pawn now, I haven't checked if it's got any vidya yet.

31 used to have so much for arcades back in the day. A little over ten years ago, the roller skating rink/skate park, Spinners, used to be the shit before it got shut down for having overnight lock-ins filled with drugs and hookers. Had a great arcade. The go kart track across the street, County Line Raceway, seems to have shut down recently too. I wish I would have gone there more. The mini golf nearby might have a few arcade games still, but I haven't been there in years.

>Anyone been to the International Center for the History of Electronic Games at the Strong Museum?

I just got back from Strong Museum. It's a five minute walk from where I work and I go there a couple times a week for lunch. And since I have a Strong membership, I usually sneak in a few games of Tempest and Robotron while I'm there.

I live in Spencerport, BTW. There's two like minded people that live here in the village, including a dude in his early 40's that has more Gen 2 and 3 games/systems than I've ever seen any single person have. He also restores arcade games and has a fully restored Dragon's Lair and Space Ace in his basement.

It must be awesome to be so close to the Strong, I live like 25 minutes away but I don't really have any business in the city so I don't go there too often.

That arcade game restoring guy sounds cool as hell. I wish I had the money/place for an arcade game.

I'm so happy I bought a copy of that on clearance for $15 at the tail end of the life of the SNES. Still have it complete in box with the guide and scratch and sniff cards. I'm quite surprised that used copies are still going for upwards of $300 on feebay. I'm just glad I didn't sell mind when it was topping out at $150. Easily the most expensive game in my very meager collection.

There's two Uniques and a Goodwill near me.

One of the Uniques and the Goodwill never have anything, I stop in sometimes just since they're all on the same route, but it's usually pointless.

The furthest Unique from me sometimes has decent shit, but it's a question of luck and do they know what they have.

Got Warcraft III Collector's Edition, Kings Quest VI, and 5 boxed Intellivision games for 23 dollars.

But usually they overprice the hell out of their shit. 10 dollars for SMB/DH and things of that nature.

They did have a Master System for 50 but I was like ehhh. Is that a good price for a Master System?

Heh, I pretty much only ever buy clothes from these places. Sometimes also books if the price is right (by that I mean $1 basically, lol).

Only good "deal" I found was an Amiga 1000 for $50 but that was back in 1992-3 at some no-name thrift store. But I already had an Amiga 2000 so didn't care about it. And these days I haven't seen any old 80's computers at all in these places. I don't even care about game consoles, those I'll just emulate, same as with MAME.

Well last week I went to a flea market and picked up a few games (mostly retro)
-Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
-Resident Evil 3
-Tomb Raider Collection (1,2,3)
-Devil May Cry 3
-Silent Hill 3
I paid somewhere around $35-40 total. I think I could have talked the guy down to $25 or around there but I think I did fine. I could have really fucked him over though since all the games have a sticker on them with the price (I could have switched the more expensive stickers with the cheapest ones)and he was helping someone out of sight. I'm glad I didn't though.
