Disc 2 isn't even that bad. It still had like 15-20 hours of content, which could've easily tripled if they added in dungeons for EVERY scene that mentions them in disc 2.

People are under the assumption that they ran out of money or some shit even though there's no evidence to support this, nor are games even developed in such a linear way that they would randomly have to abandon shit only at the end of the game.

There's a LOT of evidence that the game was rushed both from an unused asset perspective and missing narrative perspective, anon.

Nobody on the dev team said it was rushed, true - but nobody's said it wasn't either.

Can you believe IGN only gave Breath of Fire 3 a rating of 7.5? Game Informer only gave it an 8. :/ PSM gave it a great score, though.

I'll never understand why this game wasn't more popular. Maybe it just didn't have the name or reputation? For my money, it's still the most underrated game ever. It's the most complete RPG I ever played. It looks and sounds amazing, plays great,... it's a perfect ten.

I say this every time: I detest its gameplay. I don't like being led by the hand from point A to point B only to be disallowed from leaving point B until I fulfill requirement 2 so that I can be taken to point C to repeat the same tedium without being allowed to travel back to point A or explore other areas until way, way later in the game.

Basically, the fact that the game has near-zero free-roaming or exploration makes it just... not for me.

Plenty of jRPGs are linear, near all of them, actually, but they generally allow the player to explore a bunch of things, too, before fullfilling whatever requirement is necessary to advance the story and map. I dislike that SoA keeps you stuck in about 5-6 screens worth of play area at a time before taking you to the next 5-6 screens worth of play area, blocking the player from exploring at will.

It's the same gripe I have with several other jRPGs and /especially/ the GB/GBC Zeldas.
There are exceptions to this rule, jRPGs that use this sort of expanding world model of gameplay that I still like, but they're few. Very, very few.

The encounter rate doesn't bother me much. Muh first jRPGs were FFI and PS1, so I'm used to laughably frequent encounters.

Live-A-Live is a really amazing game. Unique presentation and some elements like stealth or playing as the villain that were way, way ahead of its time. The only thing that stops it from bearing the title of the best RPG in history bar none is the lack of replayability. Beating it is like reading a good book: you will read it and you will love it and you will be entranced by it, but once you do you will barely want to come back to it before years later when you profoundly forget it. The novelty is stunning and it is absolutely a must - must - play, but like all novelty it wears off and there's little the game offers to make you want to immediately replay it once you beat it. It's linear with little to no options but the presentation is great enough to make you sit through it just once and love every moment of it.

I've tried revisiting it recently because I loved Dragon Quarter, but haven't really been able to get into any of them. Mostly the prior. It's a big joke between myself and that friend of mine who I kick in the shin. He lurks and posts on /vr/ and /ck/, so it's mostly for his amusement but also my own.

The reactions from its fans are a fun distraction as well, I must admit. To be frank, though I don't "get" the praise SoA receives, I don't mind who likes it (or even the fact that people do!). It's a fond memory for me, even if I don't like the game. It was laughably bad, and honestly, I do mean that in the best way possible. It's not a hipstery so-bad-it's-good,-oh-the-irony sorta thing.
