Hey /vr/, I've never hung out on the video game boards so sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but I found these two game thingys at my uncle's place. Anyone have an idea of what it is? Also if this is the wrong board, can someone point me to the right place?

Thanks in advance!

Bottom looks like a GP2X Wiz, would probably make a decent portable emulator device. No idea about the top one, maybe someone else here will.

>>1701893

Cool, thank you so much!

>> No.1701914

The bottom one is a GP2X Wiz, a Korean linux-based portable game and media system, successor to the not necessarily super popular but still well known in gaming circles GP32.
The is a Qrio Intros, same general principle, a portable media player, I believe it can run emulators for older video game consoles and the like.

They're not TOO different from contemporary smart phones, at least in that they are mobile computing devices. This board is for retro (pre-2000 or so) gaming, so this thread doesn't REALLY belong here, but whatever; they are still pretty sweet for running emulators of old games, and have the advantage over smartphones in their control setups.

>The TOP ONE is a Qrio Intros
fixed that for me

It could still work as an appropriate thread if we're talking about them as emulation machines.

>>1701914

Oh sorry, didn't know how old they were and the pre-2000 rule, my bad! Thanks for the info though!

>>1701920

If you guys have any suggestions on games I can find/play that are pre-2000, I would appreciate that. (As I have never played LoZ and most Gameboy games when I was growing up.) If not, I'll delete the thread. ^^

>>1701927
Nah, don't delete the thread, I wasn't complaining, just pointing it out since you said you weren't used to the video game boards.

They should work great for stuff like Zelda or Gameboy emulation. This site:
http://gp2xwiz.info/tutorials.asp
has a lot of good information for setting them up on the gp2x (maybe if you're lucky whoever was using them before already installed some stuff); I know less about the Qrio though.

Since you said you haven't play many game boy games, then I'll start with that.

If you want puzzle solving games, Little Magic, the Adventures of Lolo, and The Amazing Tater, Catrap, Cave Noir are all good.

The Harvest Moon games on the console are stipped down, but if you only care about the farming and none of the dating sim stuff, go ahead.

Legend of the River King

If you like RPGS, you're in like Azure Dreams is a nice Roguelike (though like Harvest Moon, it strips out the dating sim elements), Lufia the Legend Returns is also pretty Rogue-ish , the first three Dragon Quest/Warrior games are on the game boy as well, and are remixed, often considered the best versions or tied with the SNES ones. The Final Fantasy Legend games are Saga games with bad translation, and generally have better translations or remakes out there. Grandia: Parallel Trippers is fan translated and has way more content than a game boy game has any right to, and is essential for any Grandia fan. The Sword of Hope series has point and click adventure game elements and is pretty neat. The Legend of the River King series is based around fishing. The Mario Tennis and Golf games also have RPG elements.

Survival Kids is obligatory. You're stranded on the a deserted island and have to, surprise surprise, survive. Similar to the Lost in Blue series on DS and Wii, but some prefer this game.

The console also has a lot of mon games. The not obvious ones are Dragon Warior Monsters, Telefang (fan translated and is one of the better looking games on the game boy), Magi Nation (has a fun snarky protag, based on a card game, and looks nice too), and Metal Walker is cool if you like robots and essentially playing billiards with your robots, smacking them into enemies. There is also a Mega Ten games under the of Revelations: The Demon Slayer.

In terms of Adventure games, the Gameboy has some perfectly fine versions of Shadowgate and Deja Vu.

Give me a sec and I'll do more games.

Oh I know, I just didn't want to keep a thread alive on a board it didn't belong on. Sorry for the misunderstanding! Also thanks for the site! It seems the Wiz has a memory card but don't know if anything's installed. I got it from my uncle who's in Korea and I grew up in the states so I can't really read/understand Korean. But I think I can navigate it enough to install some games.

>>1701982

I love puzzles, thank you so much for the suggestions! And will get my little brother to help me with these. He plays the older Pokemon games and other emulator games so he should know where to find them. ^^

>Give me a sec and I'll do more games.

Oh gosh, you've already given plenty of suggestions but if you don't mind giving more, I really appreciate it!

>Oh crap, didn't mean to say Legend of the River King twice.

And lol it's fine. I'm just copying and pasting all the suggestions for now. Y'all are so pleasant on /vr/. It kind of reminds me of /an/. ^^

Also didn't know they were any good, I just picked them from a spare room in the house my uncle lives in. ^^;; The room has a bunch of stuff his sister (my aunt) left behind from her days went she went to university in Japan so whenever I visit, he just lets me take whatever catches my eye. I also picked up these three guys and put them on a shelf but I think this is more /toy/'s thing. ^^;;

Well, I guess I did. I just didn't cover many genres so there might not be much of a variety.

For the other type of puzzle games, there's a bazillion versions of Tetris, but also Magical Drop, and Puyo Puyo Sun.

The Gameboy is platformer heaven, so there's so much I can't mention. Kid Dracula, Crayon Shin Chan 4, Super Mario Land (my favorite Mario game, personally. The super ball makes more sense considering how kinetic Mario gameplay is), Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Wendy Every Witch Way, and Kirby's Dream Land 1 and 2 are good for starters, though.

If you like Metroidvania games, there's Shantae and Metroid 2, which is, again, personally my favorite game in the series.

For shot 'em ups and run and guns, there's Mercenary Force, Macgical Chase, and Ikari no Yousai 2 (there's an English fan translation) .

Fighting games suck on the gameboy, mostly, but Battle Arena Toshinden is totally different from the PS1/PC versions and pretty fun. The SD. The SD Hiryu series is good also.

Hopefully, you can find some things out of all that you like.

>>1702005
Cool, SD Gundam stuff! And even a Jim! Well, the Gundam stuff is more /m/'s thing.

Oh wow, so many to check out, thank you! I've played Super Mario 3, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland on my Gameboy Micro, which I also picked up at my uncle's place, so I'm familiar with few of the titles you've mentioned. Nevertheless, I appreciate you typing that all out. ^^

And yup, but they're tiny ones so I figured it would be /toy/'s thing lol. I got more little display figures but I'll keep it on-topic since this is a gaming board. ^^

You can get all the Wiz software you need here:
http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/wiz.cgi
It can reliably emulate most 8-bit and 16-bit consoles, and with a little tweaking you can even emulate some Playstation games at a playable framerate.

It's a very well-made handheld. If mine hadn't died I'd still be using it to this day.

>> No.1702253

Bottom one is a Wiz. I used to have one, so I got the stuff memorized. It's a weird little Korean thing. Difference between the Wiz and cardboard box with "Rii" written on it is that the Wiz actually sorta functions and has software available for it. Here you go. http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/wiz.cgi

>> No.1702268

>>1702238
I should probably note, the emulators you should get are
>gpfce (NES)
>Picodrive (Genesis, SMS)
>PocketSNES
>OhBoy (Gameboy)
>gpsp (GBA)
>PCSX-ReARMed (Playstation)
With PCSX and gpsp you'll probably want to go into the options and set overclock to 700-800 MHz, some games will run slowly otherwise.

Wait, what? Why would this thing be off topic? What would you use it for besides emulation? I never heard of anything like that. Okay, it would be expected to play ports of doom or duke nukem 3d. I heard tyrian was open sourced. Where it gets unobvious is whether it could handle a quake port?

But those are all still retro, even quake 3..

>>1702043
Hahah, maybe I did mention too many games, though I'm not used to talking to people on the board who aren't familiar with emulation. Anyway, when you need to find the roms, emuparadise.me is pretty good and should even have all the Japanese games I mentioned. Coolroms and freeroms are fine if you don't their new site downloaders (those have ad ware and stuff) and just download directly.

Like that should be enough games, but if you're interested in any of the other consoles that
>>1702268 mentioned can be emulated on the Wiz, just ask and me or someone else can recommend you some games for it too. PS1 might be awkward since it seems like that thing doesn't have as many buttons as the PS1.

Yeah, you do seem quite confused.

Often, the wii gets mentioned as an emulation platform, though its modern gaming capabilities are way beyond this. The recent neo-geo handheld gets some threads, which leads to the question of whether that or one of these has stronger emulation capabilities.

Now, these things, unlike a wii of xbox, would be presumed to be emulation platforms by default. Even moreso since this Korea is gameparks home market and so whatever native games for those exist would tend to be in Korean, maybe Chinese.
