Is all of Final Fantasy 4 so sad?

Yeah, fairly sad.

Oh, well, I'm kind of enjoying it. This is my first foray into Final Fantasy other than 1 and 13-2, and I'm kind of really enjoying the atmosphere.

>> No.1699791

If you find the beginning of FFIV sad, probably. Then again, if you find that sad you probably cry during cartoons so that isn't saying much.

It is probably my favorite of the whole series. Even if it lags a bit, you somehow underwent the inhuman task of 13-2, so I think you can handle anything.

Just being honest. "Sad" scenes in FFIV are about as emotional as dropping a peanut butter sandwich on the floor halfway through making it.

>> No.1699830

>>1699804

Most people these days have literally no resistance to stuff like this. Books aren't exactly popular and the usual tear-jerking movies are ignored (granted, they're mostly pretty bad). It's only natural that they react to even weak stuff like FF4. It's pretty much their only opportunity to get emotionally involved in a story.

>> No.1699837

>>1699804
That's not a good comparison, dropping a peanut butter sandwich on the floor would make me more emotional than all of FF IV's sad scenes.

>> No.1699838

>>1699791

I won't lie, it's all a bit melodramatic, but the setting appeals to my imagination and I think that's sucking me in. Plus, Cecil basically has PTSD.

>>1699792

What's your second favorite?

Also, 13-2 was one of the most masochistic things I've ever played. I'm pretty sure I was literally punishing myself for something.

FFIV rides the melodrama pretty heavy most of the way through, yes. It is a very somber game, and you are continually beleaguered by setbacks, pyrrhic victories, and a near constant sense of despair and insurmountable struggle. Nothing good happens in the game without something bad happening along with it.

>> No.1699972

>>1699754
A major theme in it is redemption so I suppose so. It's definitely not one of the sadder JRPGs I've played though, even within the franchise.

Funnily enough, a lot of the games that I'm replaying in my 20s have made me tear up when it had almost no emotional impact to me whatsoever when I played it. Even heartwarming scenes like in Chrono Trigger's ending.

Sad games general?

A friend of mine and I were discussing this the other day. Sad games are very rare, probably because it's difficult to motivate a player to complete a sad storyline. But if you know any retro ones, go ahead, I'm all ears.

>> No.1700040

One of those same games I replayed and found surprisingly emotional was Breath of Fire II. Make sure to play it with the re-translation patch, though. There's also Terranigma, Live-a-Live and Valkyrie Profile. There are some others I can't remember the name of right now.

>> No.1700049

>>1699972
I remember playing through the majority of games growing up without feeling much emotion to them at all. For FFIV every setback came with a small victory, and every death was changed to "not actually dead." Even Aeris death in FFVII didn't really bother me, nor did anything from the future final fantasies.

But Locke's part in the WoR in FFVI, now that was the first time I genuinely felt something because it was relatable for me. He had failed to protect the one he loved and beat himself up about it the rest of his life, even though it wasn't his fault and just an accident. And when he meets damsels in distress like Celes, he uses them as a proxy to right his past failures in his mind.

And when he learns of a way to restore the one he loved before, and braves a dungeon to find what he needs, instead of it working it just gives her long enough to say thank you and goodbye. He's absolved of his past guilt and moves on.

>>1700049
For me, I think with more life experience you get to relate to the characters better. I thought Celes' scene in WoR was more cool than tragic when I first played it, for example. And that scene with Locke to more boring than anything else.

FFVI had so many good stories in it, and a lot of them were very "mature" especially considering the relative immaturity of gaming stories at the time.

Yang appears to dive in to save Rydia and Edward and die, and then later tries to sacrifice himself during the cannon thing. Palom and Porom try to sacrifice themselves by turning to stone to stop the wall trap and appear to be stuck that way forever. Cid tries to blow himself up

That's four times people try to dramatically do shit and "die" only to come back awhile later. It's pretty absurd, especially considering they really spent that dime pretty early on with everyone who vanished in the shipwreck appearing again.

Anyone played the PSP version? It's really gorgeous imo with those high resolution sprites, but it's a bit easy. Most fights are just "attack to win", so I got sick of it quickly. The DS version on the other hand had a fair challenge most of the time and was more enjoyable because of it. But the 3D graphics were ugly as fuck.

The saddest thing about FFIV is the way it arbitrarily removes characters from your party on a whim, without warning, sometimes for a large amount of time, and they take all their equipment with them. That is fucking unforgivable.

Conversely, I thought they did a great job with the low-poly 3D models and loved the more modern style cutscenes. Between that and the more ideal difficulty I thought that the DS version won flat out.

I don't think you ever actually lose a party member before you get anything rare/unique, though, except for Yang and his claws which Edge can equip but suck compared to his other weapons and IIRC the game actually gives them back to you in the Sylph Cave anyway.

I expected the shipwreck to not kill anyone, since that seems pretty common for book/movie/game characters to never actually die at sea and only wash ashore somewhere. The turning themselves to stone and blowing themselves up thing was too much, however.

I got the feeling that during production the devs wanted more people to bite the big one, but were reminded after everything was set in stone that this game can't be quite that mature.

At least later renditions of the game let you take advantage of the situation and make your own final party.

That guy was a sissy, and he ended up being the holy hero of the story because of his mongrel genetic material?

If by sad you mean dull, linear as hell, full of forced drama, one-dimensional characters, stupid self sacrifices, then yes, FF IV is a very sad game.
I'll never understand why peple held it in such a high esteem. I understand that it was first western exposure to plot-heavy jRPG, but it's been some 20 years ago, how can anyone like IV nowadays when you have much better SNS JRPGs?

yang jumping after rydia gave no indication he was dead any more than rydia or edward, and people turned to stone are clearly not dead

After the twins turn themselves to stone, Tellah tries to turn them back and basically concludes that they are stuck like that forever. Everyone in that scene basically speaks of them like they're gone forever, with Tellah asking why it couldn't have been him instead, that he would avenge them, etc. In the DS remake, he even says "If anyone were to die, it should have been me."

As far as I can tell, it's basically implied that everyone but you was lost in the shipwreck. And even when you find Yang, he implies that the other two died as well.

Stop trying to dress it up; FFIV is full of weird fake false-deaths and they continuously return to the well to do it again and again.
