Just refueling my stardrifter. Surely I'm not the only one who's played this game?

It's incredible for such a small file size. You can explore an entire galaxy, find new planets, share your findings with others, find interesting creatures, find ruins, mountains and a whole lot of other things.

The game doesn't have any sound, but it does come with a nice song to listen to while you play.

You can get it here: http://mooses.nl/nice/releases/R11dot6a/

Run DWNOCTIS.exe to start playing

The song is in docs>files>RYAN_BURY_-_NOCTIS.MID

Basic info on playing:

Movement:
Use your mouse to walk around, press up to view the outside of the stardrifter. When you're on a planet press 0-9 to change constant movement speed. Use spacebar to activate jetpack.

Flying to planets/stars:
Go to the big window panel, hold down RMB to look up and down, LMB on 'Flight Control Drive' then 'Set Remote Target'. Look around (your cursor should be locking onto different planets), double RMB to select a planet. Once a planet is selected LMB on 'Start Vimana Flight'. You should now start flying to the target planet

Landing on planets:
Once you're at a star, select 'Set Local Target' from 'Flight Control Drive'. Double RMB on a planet/moon like before, then select 'Start Fine Approach'. Once you're at the planet/moon select 'Deploy Surface Capsule'. You should see 3 screens to the right of the big window. Go to the farthest right screen, use arrow keys to set where you want to land on the planet, then press enter.

Screenshots:
Press 'B' to take raw screenshots, they'll be saved in the 'gallery' folder

Final tips:
If you're on a planet exploring and you want to get back to your stardrifter, press 'A' and the landing pod will come to you.

You'll need to refuel after flying around so much, to do this RTFM: docs>noctis_iv_manual.html. There's a lot of neat stuff in there plus some backstory and a few interesting planets you can visit. (continued)

Hit the 'F1' key at anytime to see shortcuts. There's the normal .exe in there if you want to run it in dosbox. The DWNOCTIS.exe is a bit buggy with some memory leaks, but it's still fun.

When you take a screenshot you'll need to convert it to something (png, jpg, gif) to upload it to /vr/.

Have fun :)

Thank you based anon!

I played this game around 2000, after finding it during a trawl on Home of the Underdogs (god I miss that site - its not the same without downloads).

The name has escaped me for years, you have jogged my memory. I am going to go forth and explore!

I played this for the first time around two years ago.

Just incredible considering the size but then it's all rendered on the fly isn't it?

I mean, if you return to the same spot, will it even look the same?

>>1699064

Yes it will. Its not randomly generated on the spot, its procedurally generated. Just like if you use the same seed in minecraft twice, the world comes out the same - same principal as that

Just on a slightly grander scale

Everything stays the same, that's why the game's system of naming stars/planets, writing notes about them and sharing them with other players actually works.

The game is wonderful. There was a time in my life when I used to play it a few hours a day, for over a year. If you enjoy this kind of gameplay, Noctis is diverse enough to keep you occupied for a very long time. Beautiful sights and surprises abound, and the atmosphere and sense of wonder are unmatched.
