Ben Drowned was one of my first ever 'creepy pastas' and I really enjoyed reading about it. I tried to find more stories but there's so much garbage out there.

What are some good creepy pastas based on retro vidya?

So much potential wasted. The fake screenshots are just great and you can see the effort that went into them, but then the story just had to go and do the standard "HYPERREALISTIC BLOOD EVERYWHERE THE GAME KILLED MY GIRLFRIEND AND STARTED CHOKING ME THROUGH THE TV" fare. I was legit mad when I first read it.

But anon, that ending wasn't canon.

>> No.1697169

None of them are good. They all just devolve into fanfiction and don't feel real.

Creepypasta used to mean something. It was a story that, even if it was fake, still made you feel like it could have happened. It simply doesn't work with video games.

>> No.1697254

>>1696752

I think the author just gave up and lost interest by the end. Why else would it have such a jarring, moronic ending to an otherwise really cool pasta? It probably should have ended with the guy finishing the game, no supernatural bullshit, no girlfriend plot, and the game resets to normal or it only displays the game over screen or something when it's powered on and it's no longer playable. Or maybe the monster is the result of clipping the 10NES, which in reality only existed to contain him, lol.

I think the story would be so much better if the sprites added in even remotely matched how the game looked. Some of the Backgrounds for the levels the author made are laughably bad too. It looks like some of them were drawn in paint.

Exactly. All the vidya creepypasta that wanted to become ARGs like ben drowned are really bad. And ben drowned wasn't good at all, either.

Creepypastas in general became really weak after leaving /x/ in what, 2008, 2009. You know, around the time when "meme generators" with rageface and such were created. Have you read Jeff the killer? It's atrocious and not scary in the least, but somehow it's considered a flagship, quintaessential creepypasta.

On topic, I don't think there are any great vidya creepypastas. The Theater is the best one of the bunch, probably because it doesn't take an actual video game for its story.

Honestly you'd be much better off just reading stories about Polybius. Hell, playing Chiller or reading about unreleased retro prototypes is creepier than most creepypastas at this point.

1697537

I thought Killswitch was a decent one. Suspension of disbelief goes out the window with the whole "the game permanently deletes itself and there's no way around this" thing, but it's a lot more grounded than most of these where the game tries to murder the player or some such nonsense. There's not really anything supernatural in it at all.

An example of a video game pasta I liked is Goat Jump. Look it up. Well, that wasn't much, but creepypastas in general very rarely manage to do anything for me, but HYPERREALISTIC DEAD SANIC can't do it at all, while I prefer the ones that are actually realistic, believable and mysterious. Without any "hyperrealistic" shit or supernatural shit like "I become game :((((((". Like you read them and think that this could actually be a weird game or a mod somewhere, while being subtly unsettled. For example Chiller could make a great creepypasta. MARIO romhack was good too. Sadly it takes more talent to make a geniunely believable gaming creepypasta than HYPERREALISTIC BLOOD.

Also Jeff the Killer being popular has killed my belief in humanity and I considered it to be less easily shaken than other people's.

>> No.1697570

>>1697537
"the game permanently deletes itself and there's no way around this" is pretty mild. I mean there's a real game that deletes your files as you kill enemies and itself when you win out there.

>> No.1697576

I'll admit that the Godzilla one did creep me out (I'll also admit I'm a huge coward/scaredy cat), but that wasn't so much because of its atmosphere as it was its creepy sprites.

I thought the ending was, okay...The whole Red killed Melissa thing was pretty stupid to me. I thought Red was going to be Melissa's 2spooky ghost wanting revenge or some shit.

>> No.1697579

>>1697570
I admit it's kind of a nitpick. I know it's possible that a game could delete itself, but to think that nobody thought of a way to either prevent it or just, you know, copy the data, seems like a big oversight by whoever wrote it.

I think the reason video game creepypastas aren't scary to us is because we know too much about video games and are too familiar with everything that was ever and could have ever been done with them. Like Killswitch's self-deleting element. To some kid on /x/ that probably seems perfectly reasonable. We can't help but notice something wrong with incorrect palettes or resolutions being used in fake screenshots like the Godzilla ones.

For something to be scary, it has to contain an element of the unknown and quite frankly there are a ton of actual video games out there that teams of developers have put thousands of hours into actually making creepy. Nothing that some single author could do using games as a subject can compare to how frightening some games actually are - if we can still even manage to suspend our disbelief enough to allow them to affect us.
