What are some obscure SNES JRPGs worth playing?

I've exhausted:

>anything FF
>anything DQ
>anything Lufia
>anything Mana
>anything Ys
>Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma
>Chrono Trigger

Have I burned through the best of the SNES library already?

Secret of the Stars is possibly the worst game ever. And it's an RPG.
Also, try the translated rom for Mystic Ark. And Romancing Saga 3. And, believe it or not, Sailor Moon RPG.

Rudra no Hihou
It has unique magic system.
Basically you have a spell book where you can write spells with snes pad. Yeah it means that you can have ANY magic even at the beginning of the game...

I just started playing the older Shin Megami Tensei games (not Persona... though I have played those too), and I'm really liking them. I'm pretty far through the first one, and I started Devil Children (even though I have no idea what the hell is going on cause I don't talk moonspeak), and I think they're excellent, yet a tad bit repetitive.

try ogre battle, if you want something different. don't expect an easy ride, though.

other than that, there's a bunch of fantranslated RPGs that might do it for you. try star ocean, tales of phantasia, FEDA - the emblem of justice, chaos seed, dual orb II. those are all worth it, IMO.
or go here, if you want to search for all the fantranslated ones http://www.romhacking.net/?page=translations&genre=14&platform=9&languageid=12&perpage=50&order=Status

Day of the Idea

It's like Earthbound in it's setting (Urban Fantasy), but deals with many more different themes.

One section involves carrying Nitroglycerin to an Oil site in a truck so you can get fuel for a Helicopter. If you run into anything on the map, the truck explodes.

Another has a Fight Club esque setting where a Sumo Wrestler (One of the Heroes) helps break up an illegal underground fighting arena

Yet Another has you going into a Volcano to stop sacrifices to some being called Nupopo.

Sadly the game isn't translated.

>> No.1688280

Super Ninja Boy

It's a jrpg+side scrolling platformer beat-em-up.

Only problem is the game uses a shitty passcode system (with loooong tedious codes) instead of saves. So, you might have to use savestates.

The screenshot reminded me of The Magical Land of Wozz. One of the seriously obscure SNES JRPGs (though it still got a fantranslation, I've literally never seen any discussion or mention of it outside of the fantranslation enthusiast circles). Aside from being a standard JRPG that looks at lot like Breath of Fire, it has an unique feature in the invention/crafting system that allows you to create various items, equipment, robots and vehicles to allow you in battle and travel. It also doesn't take itself seriously and has a fun, humorous and lighthearted feel. I've played it ages ago so I can't say much more about it, but if you're like me, have played all the mainstream and """""obscure""""" """""hidden gems""""" (Romancing Saga, Live-A-Live, Bahamut Lagoon) and are starving for actually obscure games there's very little information about, it should be right up your alley.

Another obscure one I'd like to put forward is Arabian Nights. It's an pretty unique little game based around Arabic mythology and genies. It has a very nice pronounced Arabic style and flair you don't see too often and has an unique gameplay feature in the form of cards your party can collect and use in battle to affect the battlefield (for example, for it to damage enemies every turn or to boost your defences), and the enemy parties, even the random battles, also use cards of their own to knock yours out of the battlefield and impose their own global effects. It was released close to the end of the SNES' lifespan and the graphics are beautiful and charming (though the battle animations are very cheap even with the decent spritework). The game feels a bit rushed, a lot of features feel kinda misplaced mostly due to the extremely botched difficulty: it's too easy to actually bother with using cards and summons, your characters near one-turn KO any boss without any overleveling. But it can be lots of fun to play through, especially if you avoid unnecessary leveling completely, and it's certainly unique.

I enjoyed it. It's a big improvement on the first game at least. I played both the SNES and PSP version of the first game, and really prefer Second Story's gameplay mechanics. It's good enough that even if you dislike the voice acting, cutscenes or the change in art style, you'll probably have a better time with the PSP version. I did sort of miss the lush 2D backgrounds though, I remember they looked really nice. They got replaced with the pre-rendered 3D you see like in Second Story.

All that said, I'm still afraid to touch Second Evolution. Even with nostalgia I can recognize the English voice acting in the original game is pretty terrible. Not sure if the new voice acting is better (probably is) but they also changed the art style from that classy 90's anime style to something you'd expect out of a moe slice of life. It just really bugs me for some reason. I'll follow up with a picture of the new art style.

I'm sure it doesn't completely ruin the experience and I'm probably just over-reacting. But it's not like they added anything great in like with the first remake, as far as I know. In fact it's apparently easier because the character you control gets a normal attack that's an actual combo, raising the amount of damage you can dish out even though the enemy stats are all still the same.

Different anon here, but SO2 is one of my favorite games of all time Along with FFT, MMX2, and KOTOR and I actually felt a little uncomfortable playing the remake.

Not enough to not give them my money for my favorite franchise, but because Rena looks like such a loli now.
Like her 90s design was awesome, I'd even say actually cute. But remake is so moe it hurts.

And I just don't get why they went that route because the designs for First Departure are so good.

Thanks man, that fills in some gaps about what I knew. By the way, how is the voice acting? I like Precis's backstory, personality, sprites and she has some neat moves. But actually using her in battle in the PSX version puts you through the torturous experience of hearing her terrible voice acting. I couldn't stand it and had to swap her out of my main team.

It's an SRPG, but if you're a /m/an you should really take up some Super Robot Wars.
