Terra from final fantasy VI was awesome.... that's if you count it as her the star.

also, I don't think there really are that many games that star women that are retro. Womyn in vidya gaems feels like a more recent thing.

I feel differently. Women as central characters were just as common in /vr/ times as they are now if not more. It's just that games didn't go all "YOU PLAY AS STRONG WOMYN" in your face as things like Mirror's Edge or Portal have been doing recently.

Realized most were from genesis. For SNES you got Hyper Iria, Magical Pop'n, Umihara kwase and pocky and rocky i guess Also fk Valis IV on the SNES. Add that demon hunter yohko shit for genesis and silviana for famicom but those was hella shit too. MUSHAS great tho.

there were a fair amount of female characters. the problem is that they were either background characters, like Roll in Megaman, they were magic users/healers in RPGs, or they were fap-fodder in fighting games.

trying to find the actual study, but...
https://www.seejane.org/research/

according to the Geena Davis institute, whenever about 17% of the people in a given space or scene are women, men will think its 50/50. any more than 17%, and the guys start thinking they are a minority.

people aren't used to seeing 50/50 male to female ratios in media. which is weird, because classrooms are usually 50/50...

I am pretty sure female characters are rare in retro games, because except for rpgs and fighting games, you never see them. and, by rare, I mean fewer than 15%. if you could count up every female character, background sprite, and NPC in every game from 1977 to 1998, I would be SHOCKED if there were 25% female.

here is the NPR transcript where Geena Davis actually states the finding
>DAVIS: We just heard a fascinating and disturbing study, where they looked at the ratio of men and women in groups. And they found that if there's 17 percent women, the men in the group think it's 50-50. And if there's 33 percent women, the men perceive that as there being more women in the room than men.

the effect of feeling like you aren't represented is something hard for a white guy to experience. try hanging out in Victoria's Secret. maybe that will give you an idea of what its like.

Looks like a false dilemma to me. Nobody gives a damn if videogames that are aimed at women are created. You don't need anybody's permission to make a videogame and market it towards women. All you need is an audience that wants to buy it. If you did then Zinga wouldn't be rolling in money.

No. No one needs convincing to play a game featuring a female main character. Do you honestly believe, even for an instant, that anyone has an issue with Pocky and Rocky, or Cotton, or Umihara Kawase, or Monster World IV, or Tomb Raider, or Portal for a modern example, having a female main character? I agree, I don't know if its the fans that need convincing. I know it is the creators and people who fund the creators. if they think that a game with a female protag won't sell, the designer won't get his (her) game funded. a lot of the issue with 50% of the population only visible 17% of the time is with the people calling the shots.

hey, maybe 4chan is super progressive, but I guarantee you, the rest of the US is not. to say nothing of the world... Although, gauging by the girls get on /v/, I would have to narrow that and say /vr/ is super progressive... if people making the games see a lot of hate thrown at female gamers, they might assume that games featuring female characters won't sell. I know this is stupid, because a lot of great games have female leads. Tomb Raider, being the best example. but, when you have the people behind Assassin's Creed saying female characters aren't worth it because they are too much trouble to code, you have a problem. this was said at THIS E3. bro, do you have any fucking clue how long it takes to make a game these days. It's not the 90s anymore. the game is coming out this October and unbisoft sure as fuck doesn't wanna delay it. They would not only have to re-create the models, they would have to go through the lengthy process of animating the models, hire more people to voice the characteres. It's not just that, the game is almost done. It's at the point they might as well re-do the game if they wanted to incorporate a female character who has a significant or important role in the game. since they would have to go through all the work (again) to accommodate some politically correct female character. wait till the next assassins creed anon.

that's not what "represent" means, in this case.
you seem to be using it as "acting on the behalf of". like, a lawyer representing a client.

the usage I am talking of is more literal. a member of a group acting as proxy for that group. if I am latino, and I see there are no latino members of the Avengers team, I might still watch/read it. If I see a latino, who is not a stereotype and is well written, I am a lot more likely to watch/read it. people love to hear about themselves. they also love to feel like part of the group.

Me, personally, I just love women. I have always loved stories with female protagonists, provided they are well written. if some 12y/o girl is inspired to become a scientist because of Lucca, in Chrono Trigger, great! I like girls, girl scientists, and girls in video games. triple win, for me!

agreed. but, this isn't politics, so much as the issues their fans find important. if it were a Japanese developer, so what? the Japanese are famously sexist. but, this is Ubisoft, the company that made Child of Light. Why was a female assassin not on their list of shit to do, in the first place? its not like they haven't been struggling to capture more female gamers, already.

maybe I am harsh on them, but I saw that screen shot of the new AS game. if the devs can accurately model every brick in a street a hundred feet below, they can spend a little time sprucing up an NPC model and slapping a hood on it.

I don't think there is much evidence for female brains being unsuited for science. there is a strong case for women being adverse to criticism, which is why you rarely see women publishing articles on their research or editing Wikipedia articles. there is a strong case that women don't like competing against men, which is why you don't see a lot of women getting patents or leadership positions.

just because you don't see a lot of female scientists and programmers doesn't mean their brains can't handle it.

Even beyond that, why should I be obligated to do anything at all in my personal game? If I have female fans that's great, but they should learn to love the work for what it is rather than what they wish it would be. if its your personal game, that's fine. the most important thing to any successful work is that the creator WANT to do it, and want to do it to please his audience. if that audience is himself, that's fine.

once the audience gets too large, then its not just a private affair. Games aren't obscure toys for hobbyists and nerds, anymore. We are rubbing elbows with millions of other fans, like it or not. and the creators may have started out making children's toys, or entertainment for geeks, but they are shepherds of global culture, now. Where Charlotte's Web and The Wizard of Oz used to shape childhoods, we now have Pokemon and The Legend of Zelda. Childhood memories for tens of millions are being made with a controller in hand. Fans, you and I, have done that, so it sucks to have our favorite thing taken away from us.

but, its not really being taken away. there are still games that cater to niche audiences. I, personally, like pixel art and chiptunes. luckily, the indie game scene is there to satisfy me. but, the massive AAA games can't be all weird and niche. they cost too much to make, and honestly, they are too important. Ubisoft and EA and Nintendo, and all, don't get to pretend it's their little sandbox, anymore. With great power comes great responsibility.

the global culture wants its values and ideals reflected back at it. Major game publishers have been given incredible power over culture, so they have to deliver what the people want.

I absolutely agree. Even when the science is sound, one must be careful of two things when it comes to discussion of the delicate topic of minorities, be they gender, sex, sexual or racial.

1) to use the data only as data and not as justification for holding strongly biased opinion based on any of a person's several categorisations
2) to avoid using the data to make concrete statements rather than observations.

There are many, many women in the sciences. They are underrepresented. Acknowledging this fact is not a crime. Researching a reason for it is not a crime. Announcing the collected data that could provide an explanation for the underrepresentation of women in the sciences should not be a crime, either, so long as it doesn't contradict those two points I made above.

2. bigotry against jews has existed for an extremely long time. long before Jesus was crucified, but I think it was the crucification that really got the ball going. might be wrong, go ask /pol/ for a fact check.

>if the jews are so innocent how come they have been kicked out of like every country they have ever inhabited.
I'm almost certain this is bait but... it mostly comes down to them being an easy 'other' to target, due to their self-segregation, their distinctness, and the history of Christianity and Judaism itself. Their wealth and prominence in finance also gave unscrupulous rulers a reason to have them targetted.

Actual SJWs aren't taken seriously. They're too busy moaning about microaggressions on their tumblrs and backbiting each other and other progressives over tiny slights.

4chan's interpretation of what SJWs are includes people who are taken seriously, because as already mentioned, it is so wide as to include any progressive thought.

Deserted, zombie-animal filled quest through NYC over Christmas. I love it. I also love how Aya ditches her douche BF right at the beginning.

Never actually played II but I picked it up at a flea market a couple weeks ago for $3 and I'm about to start. Same dude kept calling me "little lady" and begged me to buy his copy of Earthbound for $160.

Yeah that's why I think this whole "movement" to get women interested in science is stupid.

You need to be a certain kind of person to even want to study science in the first place. So telling young girls that they should be more interested in science for the sake of some bullshit ideal of "equality" and "fairness", is straight-up doublethink.

>> No.1687507

>>1687478
The thing is, while it's not anywhere near as bad as it used to be, there's still social pressures that push girls towards "girl things" (and vice-versa for boys), particularly from older generations. I see it all the time with my niece. People just assume they know what she likes and dislikes (or worse, what she SHOULD like and dislike) based solely on her being a girl.

The movement to get women interested in science isn't about shoehorning in women who genuinely aren't interested at all, it's about giving those who would be interested but are deterred - consciously or unconsciously - a shot at it.

Gods, yes! Jill of the Jungle, fuck what the SJW's say, Vidya had "Strong, Female Leads" back during the days of DOS, and JotJ is proof of that. Might not have been the norm, but the definitely existed.

>SRS idiocy - http://imgur.com/G2Eq11w

Incidentally, SRS stands for "Shit Reddit Says". They're Radical Feminists from Reddit. Let me see if I can find an old post to illustrate, as I think letting you see the stupidity in all it's original glory would speak more volumes than I could on the faggotry that goes on in that board/sub.

Personally, I prefer pic related, as a standard for treating my fellow humans, regardless of male/female, unless they give me valid reason otherwise. Seems to work for me.

After some looking around, it looks as if the current atmosphere may have changed from what it was back in the day. Used to be they were the types to post the above pic. Now, it seems they're more of a "Idiocy Display" akin to /r/SubredditDrama. Of course, I could be wrong...

Self-segregation does justify it, though.

Humans are a social species, and as such human society expects a certain level of conformity. The nail that stands out gets hammered down. If you act like an alien, you're asking to be treated like one.

Sorry, not buying it. Nothing could justify the eugenics-styled society the Reich was trying to build of ubermensch, nor the horrors visited on the variety of victims the Reich targeted in their march to domination. Law is addressed to redress from individuals, not from entire ethnicities.
