Sgt Mark was working on a Brutal Strife, but IIRC there was little demand so he stopped working on it. I actually thought it was pretty neato, I think it would be more suitable for Strife than Doom since D's gameplay is good without mods whereas Strife's was always a bit wonky.

The enemies weren't fun to fight past the humans, but BS made them explode and it made fighting them actually fun (fighting any robot is fun as long as it explodes decently when defeated)

First, they'd have to make lots of new sprites since there won't be much overlap between Doomguy and Doomgirl.
Then they'd probably have to resprite the male sprites if they were using those for lewd and would have to come up with lots of new stuff for Demongirls if they used that instead.
Then there is probably not that much interest in it.

There's a whole ton ton ton of things other Metroid fans have been requesting of me to see in Dreadnought, and while I've run a few of these ideas by you lads before, I figure I might as well post it here and get a solid idea on what you'd consider cool.

I definitely want to do a lot in regards to balance. Wave Beam is absolutely obscene in its damage at the moment, and overall the higher difficulties could use a little bit more danger to them.
I'm currently thinking of swapping out the "you take more damage" with "you do less damage" (or supplementing it with that as well), effectively making the monsters even beefier and requiring you to gun 'em down faster.

I think you can take breaks, as long as you aren't actually working on the map while you do it. I did all of mine in 3-hour blocks though. I don't think I did too bad, and I think my maps have steadily increased in quality the more I do it.

I will disclaimer that these aren't the first maps I've ever made, so if you haven't made a map ever before this you might want to make one or two to get the hang of the mechanics first.

The important thing I learned was that you shouldn't get hung up on trying to make a particular thing work, especially if it's an unfamiliar special sector tag or something like that. It's easier to scrap it and do something you're more familiar with than waste 20 minutes to a half hour and then still not have it working right, when you could build an entire room or something in that amount of time.

The other thing I found was that it's very important to just not stop building. Build a room and just start adding sectors or lines to it to make it a different shape and have it lead somewhere; you can worry about its context or texturing later and adapt it to fit that. I also personally didn't put more than 2 keys in any of my 200min maps because it's faster if you only have to worry about two.

So running into a bit of an issue with Threshold of Pain. Running it with Perkistian's Smooth Animations. For some reason I can only switch between Pistol and Fists. When I pick up the shotgun or any other weapon, it comes up on screen, but I can't switch from it using next/prev weapon on my mouse scroll, and when I do change back to pistol or whatever, it won't let me pull the shotgun out again. Without looking at it, my best guess is that it's a KEYCONF issue. Both the smooth weapons and ToP define new weaponslots, so what happens is you're picking up the ToP shotgun, but since you're using Smooth Animations, once you switch back to the pistol, there's no weapon slot defined for the new shotgun you picked up. You'd have to make a compatibility patch of some kind so it'll play well with ToP.

biggest problem though with halo with what you said is the fact that it was targeted mainly to consoles, not that it's a bad thing but the factor in they had to sacrifice movement and such in terms of how it functioned, it may have been a different story with FPS prior to it, but halo decided it was going to do it's own pacing and slow things down due to controls on a controller being the primary method of control. The DooM engine had some of the best horror wads/mods out there to offer. Here are a few that I believe everyone out there should try. I'll mention a few honors as well.

Unloved/Unloved 2 had THE thickest atmosphere that I had ever experienced in a video game. There is a hidden back story to the protagonist. Apparently the demons/monsters that you fight are the ones that you created in your head. This wad IMO is better than most of the current, if not all of the horror atmospheric games that are released today. It's so simple yet so brilliant.

Happy Times Circus 2 made me realize why people experience clownophobia. There is no music in this wad (Except for the whistling wind and scattering of dead leaves, which really adds to the overall creepy ambiance of the environment). You start out in a abandoned town (which look like it predates to the 1960's) and you explore each building, not knowing what the haunted town is going to throw at you next. There is a kind of "clown realm' that is merging with reality. A really cool concept that molds well with Steven Kings "IT".

Cold As Hell was deep and immense. You are a marine from the 1950's. Your mission is to investigate a cold war era base that stopped receiving contact with the U.S. army. You read notes and journals from various scientist and later discover who was behind the initial attack of the base.

I have weird obsessions with ammo numbers on all weapons - I try to always keep a multiple of 2 on chaingun used zombieman clips are the bane of my existence, a multiple of 4 on shotguns, a multiple of 5 on rocket launcher and a multiple of 40 on BFG. I see, well here's some possible solutions I've thought of:

1: Make sure you're actually using the compatibility patches Doom RPG has for DoomRL Arsenal and Monsters on the left-hand side.

2: If you've toggled "Extras", turn it off. That breaks shit when turned on with DoomRL Arsenal in my experience.

3: If you're using Brutal Doom, turn that off too.

4: Once you're in-game, try going into Options>Doom RPG Options then going to the bottom and turning on DoomRL Arsenal compatibility. I don't know what that fixes exactly or what it does in addition to the patch, but it can't hurt.

By the way, if you haven't found out yet set the map number to 0 on the launcher if you want to keep it from skipping the main menu.

Well, ideally you should finish the entire monster's sprites first before you even put it into the game. Especially if you don't know how to do DECORATE code, since that's essential if you're going to actually test the monster in-game

If you want to just post the sprites, other people can do the code work for you (me for example) or even put it into the game. We can also tell you if it's gonna look good mostly from just looking at it.

BUT, let's assume you've already done all that and have the monster coded. Here is actually the best way to do it:

-Load up vanilla Doom 2 with just the wad with the monster in it
-Warp to an open map (optional as MAP01 has a nice big open backyard area)
-Type "kill monsters" in the console to eradicate all threats
-Go to the open area of the map
-Type "summon monstername" into the console (with monstername being the actor name of your monster)

This is going to be subjective to everybody. Some people like big open maps, some people like cramped maps. Some people like small maps, some people like huge maps.

To me, a map isn't just a map, it's a level in a larger set. I realize not everyone makes maps this way (especially if it's for, say, a community project like our own 200mins project) But you should keep that in mind and kind of work your shit around that. For example, if you have two long, expansive levels, the next level should be pretty short and relatively small, to give the player a kind of "break" before they enter another large level where they might get lost.

In addition, the best maps do a few core things pretty much always:

-Always change floor height if you want to change floor textures
-Inset your doors; that is, put a little "doorway" between the actual door sector and the room. Look at E1M1 for an example.
-Pick a texture theme and stick to it. If your map is techbase, don't randomly start throwing Hell textures into a room in the middle.
-Try to make each room unique to itself within the level. By this I mean, you can have multiple levels with "computer rooms" that are similarly designed, but try not to have more than one "computer room" per level. This way the player can use those rooms as landmarks. Ideally, every room should be easily remembered by the player. "Oh, this is the room with the blue carpet and high ceilings." "Oh, this is the outdoors area." "Oh, this is the green walled dark sewer part."
-If you make a window to outside, make sure the player can get to that outside area. It's more fun that way and it's a great way to come up with secrets
-Try to make sure your level has a progression to it. When making a monster encounter, think about what equipment the player is likely to have at this point (both from pistol start and from previous levels) and think about what kind of threat is appropriate.

Best bet: Trial and error. Make a map, see if other people like it.

I remembered one other thing, it's a trick I learned to use recently re: changing floor heights when you want to change texture. It turns out that if you make the door on a kind of "step" up (just put it up 8 units) then you can pretty seamlessly build the next area at that height and keep the changed floor height while not necessarily having to build a new area.

Some of my earlier maps are filled with a doorway up a step and it changes texture, and that single texture clashes with the whole rest of the room since it's from another area.

Oh and one more thing (unrelated to floor heights): Ideally you should build your level in a way that there are different ways to play the level. There shouldn't be one and only "intended route" where the game kills you if you don't go that way. It's one thing to block off areas with keys (E1M6, great example) but it's another to make it impossible to go one way through a level. If someone says, "The only way I can get through this room is if I went to the other room and got the BFG first," you have a poorly designed monster encounter.

Hold ctrl, click on both Scythe and Brutal Doom, drag them both to Zandronum.exe, then select Doom 2 and play.

I'd suggest not playing Brutal Doom and play something better, but different strokes for different folks.

If you want some extreme difficulty, Hideous Destructor is utterly punishing and a lot more tacticool. If you want some incredible new graphics, Accessories to Murder practically redoes every graphical asset and makes the shotgun the HAMMER OF THE GODS. Neither of those are Zandronum mods - if you want to stick with that then Metroid Dreadnought is a gr8 Zandronum-specific option.

Doom 1 and 2 will forever exist (and be ported to newer operation systems). Doom 3 rebooted the story (which was a sensible thing) and it didn't kill Doomguy, didn't dilute Doomguy or anything. I remember reading that the designers thought balancing for a pistolstart in DOOM's levels was "a bad idea", due to it making them much easier when having equipment from earlier maps.
So they might have done Quake's levels differently. I wouldn't know as I haven't really played or read up much on Quake.
