Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Continue from >>1635830

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

This game is like an awful Lemmings clone. It has no save feature so I had to resort to passwords since no way I was beating all 100 levels in one sitting. I am somehow on Level 96 and want to shoot myself in the fucking face. I am sick of rescuing these idiot passengers off this stupid ship. They just kinda die in water and run right into spikes.

And done.

This was rather good. Controls are tight and very responsive. Hitboxes seem off at times. The visuals are nice and bright although the background in a few stages hides the enemies rather well. The music is catchy but the sound effects are a bit grating, especially the constant shouts of "thank you" from your little buddies when you pick them up. Levels are over pretty quickly and there's not that many, so it's a pretty short game compared to Snow Bros or Bubble Bobble but you're never stuck trying to reach that one enemy who just won't get into range.

It's a fun little arcade title. Would recommend.

This might sound like a dumb question, but is there any difference between the Neo Geo console and the Neo Geo arcade board? Because Zupapa ws added to my local arcade in 2002 and I clearly remember it having the copyright dated to 2001.
Either way, Neo Geo sort of straddles the fence on retro/not retro.

Glad you got to play Zupapa, though! It reminded me a lot of Snow Bros meets Liquid Kids, two games I played a metric fucktonne of at the game hall when I was a wee kiddie so when I saw it next to Mr Driller at the local arcade here, grown-up me had to give it a try. And I was hit by a nostalgia bomb with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns.
I <3 Zupapa!

As far as I'm aware, there's no difference between the console and arcade hardware besides the obvious inability to plug six carts into the home console at once.

And yeah, Zupapa came out in 2001 making it not a retro game by /vr/ ruling although it was apparently finished back in 1994 and sat around collecting dust for whatever reason so I'm not entirely sure where it stands in that regard. Either way, it's fun and everyone should give it a whirl sometime.

>> No.1688559

>>1688539
No, no. It's /vr/ if the Neo Geo console and Neo Geo arcade board are identical which, according to Wikipedia, they are, save the arcade board had four cartridge slots rather than a single one. Since the Neo Geo was released in 1990, this means that anything released for it until its 2004 death is perfectly within bounds of /vr/'s rules.
I just wasn't sure at first, but after posting that other thingy, I looked it up for muhself.

There is one level and it loops although why you'd want to do it more than once is beyond me. Controls are stiff and the penguin jerks about so dealing with the precision jumps is irritating. Collision detection is way the fuck off, making you slide down hills without even being near the edge. Sound is practically non existent, there's a jump noise and some little ditty that plays every time you die and both are annoying. Visuals are garbage, even for 1983 standards.

I'm getting more into it as I play it, but I never really liked Endorfun, so I'm probably going to fail this one out of boredom. I'm on stage 1-7 of Normal. The music mentions there being 10 stages, and then I've got Puzzle mode if I have to 100% the game. I imagine I have to do Easy mode too, since I imagine it's a different set of boards from normal. Alright, guess I can't finish this game.

Apparently when you destroy all the power stations you're supposed to go into some 3D tunnel sequence to "warp" you to the next area, instead it just hangs. I'm guessing this is an emulation issue but none of the settings I mess with seem to fix the problem, so I'm chalking this up as a dud and will reroll tomorrow.

So it's a puzzle game that involves you linking up red gears on either side of the screen by placing other randomly picked gears and putting them down on pegs. There's some little dickweeds that jump around and ruin your fun by destroying your gears or pulling out pegs, so you need to be quick or make use of your limited items to fend them off.

It's also known as Gear Works on other platforms and in other countries.

Seems fun, so far. Also seems to work without problems. Always a plus.

First time living this long. Calling score now.

For those who don't know, you're some kind of knight mounted on a cross between an ostritch and that bird thing in Heavy Metal.
Every level after the 3rd, different platforms are taken away. This makes it easier to fly around without hitting anything (think hard rubber bouncy ball), but it's also easier for the baddies too. Enemies drop eggs for points and if they aren't collected in time, they hatch a new one.
Also if you're too slow at killing everyone and grabbing the eggs a pterodactyl comes out and chases you until one of you is dead.

Fucking finally.

Okay, so. This is a pretty good idea for a puzzle game, but it has some really annoying problems. The controls are not as accurate or as fast as you need them to be for the speed this requires you to move at. Mouse controls would have been nice but we don't get that option here. Since the gears you get are randomly selected, you'll frequently find yourself running out of items to clean up the board and get that one gear you need in the right spot. The time limit is also absurdly strict in places and the levels drag on making things even more frustrating. Visuals are average but not painful, the two little enemies running around the board do get hard to spot at times. Sound gets on the nerves after a while but there's some decent tunes in there.

Good concept, poor execution. Would not recommend.

I've been going for about 5 levels now of this madness so let's make things a bit quick here.

Not a simple task trying to pick the most interesting material out of a game with an onslaught of things that would probably qualify for childhood nightmare fuel.

So I'll just leave this small compilation sampling what I've witnessed so far.

Any instance where the score drops to a lower value is after having to continue (some of these boss enemies have very erratic patterns that can screw you if your health is low going in).
>>1709024
Somehow, I've got a bad feeling I'm gonna be missing this game's simplicity when I move on to Romance of the three kingdoms (didn't even know that had a US release on the SNES). Not really one for SRPGs but that's what I was dealt.

I'll split this into a compilation and then the ending.

Finally done with this mess. Wish the combat wasn't so sloppy, but it was still quite the experience.

It's late so I'll set up my emu for RoTK IV tomorrow. I'm gonna need the focus anyways for an SRPG I have no experience with to begin with. It'll be worth it to get my hands on Maximum Carnage again later.

5th level is even worse. Not only you have a fuckton of enemies running at you everywhere, but you also can't jump down because you're on a fucking train. Not to mention you also have to deal with the 1st boss in the middle of the level.

I'm done for now. I'll try again later. Also forgot to bring a screenshot because I was too focused dying...

Beat it. It was very easy for a magaman game, probably the easiest 8 bit one I've ever played, save for the toilet humor from the hack, I didn't really enjoyed it.

Next up is "Pro Sport Hockey" for the SNES.

NES - Archon
SNES - Super Metroid
GB/GBC - Animaniacs
Game Gear - Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin
Genesis - The Lion King
TG16 - Final Zone 2
DOS - Ken's Labyrinth
NeoGeo - Magician Lord
GBA - Jimmy Neutron - Attack of the Twonkies
Sega Master System - Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck
C64 - Seastalker
Amiga - Space Rogue
PS1 - Crash Bandicoot 2 - Cortex Strikes Back
N64 - B.I.O.F.R.E.A.K.S.
Dreamcast - NFL 2k

I went to the Dreamcast game list on Sega Retro and just scrolled around with my eyes closed.

Overall it's a pretty good list, with Super Metroid and Crash. 2k is supposed to be one of the greatest sports games of all time.
